So boring I fell asleep!!
13 March 2011
I rarely write reviews. But sometimes the Public need to be protected from underhanded marketing and paid-off critics. I read the reviews and saw the previews and went to see this horrible excuse for a Pixar knock-off. If anyone here is expecting something clever you can forget it. There's very few funny lines except for the previews you saw which made you want to come in the first place. There's an unimaginative reference throughout to a well-known classic film. I hope it isn't supposed to be an homage because it seems more like a second class ripoff. There are pedestrian references to other films as well. Typical of mainstream Hollywood's lack of imagination today. The movie is so boring I actually found myself falling asleep. Which hasn't happened since I made the mistake of attending an opera. Lest you think I'm alone in this opinion my wife said she found herself falling asleep as well and when she turned to tell me, while in the movie, saw that I was dozing. The animation is top-notch but it should be in this day and age. The script is so poor it never ceases to amaze me how today's screenwriters get work. I've written better blindfolded. Verbinski's success at the box office with the Pirates franchise has the Suits in Hollywood fooled into thinking that he can actually direct well. His pacing in this terrible movie is made for an audience of snails. Johnny Depp who is always great has nothing to work with here. Sad waste of his talent as it was for all the actors here who do the best with what little they were given. I'm giving it 3 stars for the animation alone and the Los Lobos theme song. Save your money and watch The Incredibles on DVD.

It's a different film than 2001 but I still liked it better.
8 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I'm amazed that none of the comments I read bothered to pick up on the religious significance in the film. To me it seemed rather obvious and it is one of the reasons I liked the film so much. I'm surprised the Christians weren't outside protesting it -- the second coming of the "sun". That alone was worth the price of admission for me. The second thing was the dialog between Bob Balaban and HAL near the climax of the film. For me it was the most touching dialog EVER between a man and a machine. Hands down. It brings tears to my eyes. As mentioned in another comment the dialog between Scheider and Dullea is also great. I realize the film looks dated now as do a lot of films due to technology. But the acting I felt was topnotch. Look who's in it -- Mirren, Lithgow, Balaban and Schieder. Great actors. Also the script was very good and I thought inventive especially the religious idea. The reasons mentioned above put the movie in a separate class to me. If people haven't seen it I always tell them it's one of my favorite films.

Great, original romantic comedy
3 March 2008
Okay, it may not be as great as "When Harry Met Sally ..." but it still is better than a lot of romantic comedies I've seen lately. The guy who wrote and directed this also wrote "French Kiss" which is an all time favorite of mine. So I give this 9 stars. It is what I go to the movies for which is to feel good. This movie has a feel good quality and most of all I like the ending. I felt it was an original type of story especially how it is told. I wish Adam Brooks would write more of these. This one is up there with "French Kiss". The acting is very good and I was surprised at how much I liked Ryan Reynolds as I have seen him in other things I did not like him in. All the women actors were great as was the little girl. You could see a lot worse movies than this one. This was not a waste of money.

Great acting and directing
21 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the people who gave a low score because there was no conclusion. If you like unresolved films then fine. I don't. I thought the acting and directing were top notch. But when the movie ended I was actually surprised and highly disappointed. I go to the movies to be entertained and ultimately satisfied that there has been some resolution. Bad or good doesn't matter but there is some resolution. I obviously prefer to see a hero win. But if you make a point with the hero losing then I'm fine with it. This movie has no ending. So it gets an average score. Pity as it could have been a really great movie had there been a conclusion with an impact.

I hate movies like this
2 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Art is something that communicates to people. Therefore the art can be judged by what it communicates. This film only communicates that evil in the end triumphs. I have a problem with filmmakers who use movies as a device to depress people. This is exactly how I felt about another piece of garbage film "American Beauty". Both movies are unjust and thoroughly depressing. Movies can be tragic and uplifting but that requires a skillful director, writer and actors. What you have in this film is just the intention to make the audience depressed and to pass it off as art, which, it is but not in the same category as "Braveheart", "Stand by Me", "To Kill a Mockingbird", or any other tragic but uplifting film. If you like watching this kind of film and feeling this way just watch the evening news. The phrase is "Life imitates Art." What you have in "Mystic River" is "Art imitates Life." Its what filmmakers do when they are either lazy or have no talent.

The Forgotten (2004)

Totally underrated movie
20 September 2006
I've seen what others have written -- bagging on this movie but in my opinion this is what's perfect about movies in general. This makes it perfect: 1) It has an original idea. 2) It has a lot of surprises. 3) You really have some care for the people in the movie. 4) It has a good ending (by that I mean uplifting).

That is what I want in a movie. I don't like movies that end badly. If I want bad I'll watch the news. There's plenty of bad made-up stories on the regular nightly news.

And I don't mean just because somebody dies its a bad ending. Braveheart had a great ending and the hero dies. American Beauty on the other hand sucked because of the ending.

So in my opinion -- "The Forgotten" is a perfect movie for those who like movies. However if you like films maybe you should see something else.

What's so special?
20 August 2006
This movie is a prime example of people being too messed up from the 1960s after taking too much LSD. People are reading way too much into this movie. If this movie was made today it would be panned and dismissed. It is boring beyond belief. You keep waiting for something to occur. Nothing ever does. By the time it ends you are thinking I'm going to kill myself if I have to endure another minute. The acting of Nicholson and Black is above average but you wonder what they saw in choosing to do this horrible script. The comment that this is one of the key films of the 1970s is ludicrous. These are the kind of movies from the 70s that should be forgotten. Give me "Apocalypse Now", "Patton", "Godfather", "American Graffiti" or "Star Wars". This movie sucks. One great scene does not a movie make.
