Die Banneling (1971)
Long unseen South African film
This film - derived from a popular SA radio serial and later a photo-comic story - tells the story of a doctor, sentenced to almost a decade of prison time due to the death of his wife while in his care who is released on parole and on returning to his home town, is treated like a leper and an outcast by all except his parents who have been caring for his young son during his period of incarceration.
Emotionally scarred by the community's rejection of him and in desperate need to look after his parents and son, he joins a mercenary outfit in the Congo as a medic, only to have his young son take the road in search of him. And here begins South Africa's first "road movie".

Apartheid media was even worse than this
During the apartheid era in South Africa from the time of the inception of the censor board in 1933, media was strictly controlled. Anything that the then government felt to be "offensive to a certain section of the public" or "offensive to public morals" - newspapers, books, music, magazines, movies etc - was banned.
Oh yes, television and horrible books like Black Beauty were banned too.
