The Gates (2023)
Good story ruined by poor script and acting
First, it's a rather long movie for the substance. They really go to lengths to draw things out unnecessarily. The script is painful to listen to. It's very sophomoric, and the over-baked archetypes make the acting pretty cringe. I actually really like. John Rhys-Davies from other movies. Elena Deliia also does a good job with a poor script. However, Michael Yare should seek employment as something other than an actor. It's like watching a junior-high school student attempt acting for the first time. What makes it all worse is, even though there are a few good actors, there is absolutely zero synchronicity between the cast. None of them mesh well together, so it makes it really difficult to try to enjoy what little gems there are to this story. This could have been done a million times better, and they obviously had the budget for it.
You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment (2024)
Good message wrapped with too much finger wagging
I've been on a vegan lifestyle journey for about 6 years, so I really appreciate documentaries that delve into that world and do valid research into what changes occur in the body both short-term and long-term. What I really was interested in with this documentary is taking twins and comparing the effects of opposing diets over a short period of time to gain a more reliable baseline.
That interest was quickly killed when the documentary went on long rants from various politicians about the end of the world, climate change, and cow farts. Again, I absolutely believe in a massive reduction in meat consumption by people who choose an omnivorous diet, if not for the health of the person, at least for the benefit of the animals that live miserable lives so people can eat them. Again, I completely support a person's right to choose whatever diet they deem fit for themselves, but at the same time I can hope for better treatment for the animals that comprise a portion of their diet.
That being said, this documentary gives the impression that you simple follow these people and their diets and changes over a period of time. That's not what this documentary is about though. It is a long and drawn out lecture from politicians about climate change, cow farts, and the end of the world. Listen, if you want credibility, any credibility, do NOT include a politician in your message. It was such an immense turn off, and I am coming from the side of the isle that actually supports a plant-based diet. But this documentary is just overkill. Stick to the diet theme, don't try to shove every 'save the planet' talking point into a few hours, you only turn people off and turn people away.
It's ironic really, the message in the documentary has a 'everything in moderation' tone, yet this documentary is the furthest from moderation in trying to shove every talking point down the viewer's throat. It's a shame too, because presenting valid studies with research like this is great to show people who are questioning changing their diets.
Monsters of California (2023)
Lipstick on a pig
The trailer made the movie look interesting. The perspective on the paranormal film seemed different, so I wanted to give it a chance.
The pros:
Decent production quality (aside from the sound levels that would drop every 10 minutes or so and some odd camerawork). That's probably as far as the pros go.
The cons:
Laughable script. It's like a 15 year old stoner wrote the lines for the movie, and that's not an exaggeration. The character reactions to different situations are nowhere near being organic. They're just forced idealized and cliched copies of a plethora of other films.
The actors were terrible. I would say, one would expect this kind of acting in a B-flick, but even that kind of movie has better acting than this movie did. This is more in line with something a college student would make, meaning they just used the people around to be in their project, like close friends and family = people who have no acting ability.
There is no real flow to the movie. It randomly jumps from scenario to scenario with no real continuity. They ignore the main theme (not giving spoilers) and how it connects to the characters.
I get Tom DeLonge is interested in the paranormal, and this was a project for him to play with that, but he should stick to music.
Rick and Morty: How Poopy Got His Poop Back (2023)
The soul is gone
I've been a huge fan of Rick and Morty from the beginning. Justin Roiland's creativity and uniqueness is what made R&M so great. Unfortunately, last season seemed a little off, but it was still the show with the same soul.
I just watched the first episode to season 7. They've removed Jeff Roiland from the show. There are so many things wrong.
The voicing is mediocre at best. Rick's voice is almost there, but it's missing that completely developed character that Justin gave him. Morty's voicing is quite bad. The rest of the voicing is terrible.
The whole episode, it just feels like something is completely off. It feels like a carbon copy.
I won't be continuing to watch the show now that it simply is no longer the same show. Nothing lasts forever, but the show should have ended when Justin was taken off.
I'm sure some people will watch it out of habit, or to see if it can develop without the creator of the show, but all I see is a fabrication that will struggle to live up to fans expectations.
Unwelcome (2022)
I hate this movie so much I couldn't stop watching
The amount of trash movies that exist right now are infinite. There is so much recycling that movies are simply no longer enjoyable.
This movie is an absolute train wreck of fresh air. There were so many parts that just irritated me beyond belief, so much so that I wanted to skip through scenes, but I didn't, and I hate that.
The cheese factor is seriously over the top. Little things like the fact they were on a created set for the house made obvious by the shadows cast in multiple directions from the lighting (which I think was intentional) pulls you out of the movie, which is irritating, but I couldn't stop watching!!!
I hate this movie so much. I laughed and I didn't want to. There's so much jacked up stuff, but the revenge factor is more than satisfying.
It's definitely cult worthy, but I wish they would have gone even further with some bits to really amp up the culty-ness of it.
Watch it, you'll hate it to!
Lost Ollie (2022)
Good movie, rough acting
I really like this movie/show. Great story, good meaning. The actors do a good job of portraying their characters, but they have a problem with something else. The problem I have is when actors try to do this fake country accent, it makes it really hard to get past. It's not just the accent, but we country people have an entirely different intonation in our phrasing. It's how we give life to our language, and there are many different kinds of country accents, not this atypical one that keeps getting thrown around on TV and films. Just would be nice if they actually studied the speech patterns instead of defaulting to this stereotyped accent that does not actually exist anywhere. I know some country accents are really hard to do, but that shouldn't mean you default to stereotypes.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Hot Garbage
It's sad when you have name-brand actors, graphics, producers, so on and so forth, creating a film that can't even pull it together enough to make it better than the $15,000 budget garbage on Amazon. Don't waste your time. Don't watch this movie.
