Children of Men (2006)
This movie is still born with a lot of emphasis on action and little story or character development.
This movie is an incoherent mess; both the story and characters are underdeveloped. At best it is an okay action movie. I went to see it because it was well received by the critics and it fit into my schedule that day.
P.D. James is one of my favorite authors but I was not motivated to read her book prior to seeing the movie because I am not fond of books about the future. However, just to understand what the movie was all about, I decided to read her book. I think this movie could have been so much better if more time have been spent on character and story development and less on pyrotechnics and guns.
Anyone wanting to watch this film on DVD or on television would be well served to read the book before investing two hours in this movie. I saw the film during its theater run but I will probably watch it again when it comes on television to see if it is more comprehensible to me.
The Killer Is Loose (1956)
Psychopath seeks revenge on cop who killed his wife.
Very tight movie until the end. At that point it becomes completely illogical to drive a dramatic finish. However, it is still very enjoyable. Very different from todays crime movies. It's clear that the code is at hand with the separate beds for Cotten and Flemming and very little up close violence.
Paint Your Wagon (1969)
Excellent musical comedy in the best Broadway tradition
This is a very good musical comedy. Although the main characters are obviously not professional singers it works and fits the rough circumstances the play is set in. The production values of this film casting, cinematography and script are excellent. The only weak point of the film is the slapstick end to No Name City.
Oliver's Travels (1995)
Quirky and romantic like classic Hollywood screwball comedy
This is a quirky romantic piece with lots of surprises. The leads are very engaging, intelligent and real. They are not overly glamorous but yet very attractive people you would not mind spending time with. This mini series is very reminiscent of the classic Hollywood screwball comedies of the thirties and forties . Preston's Sturges' Sullivan's Travels comes to mind. This is one of the best shows to ever appear on PBS and it's difficult to understand why it is not out on Video or DVD. I am very thankful that I made a copy of this program when it was originally aired on PBS.
