Dexter: What's Eating Dexter Morgan? (2013)
I am perfect.
A good comeback from a slightly dull episode last week. The plot has now settled down a bit and the tussle between Dexter's sinister side and the love for his sister has never been more pronounced as in the scene where he takes her from the station. As Vogel suggests, we see glimpses of Dexter's self preservation and survival instincts kicking in which should make him take a decision sooner rather than later.. The Dr.Hannibal type killer was an opportunity wasted, but it finally gives us our first kill this season. And as the one pushing Dexter to kill, does Vogel qualify as a killer herself? How will Vogel and Deb react to the other's secrets and problems?
As interesting as it seems to be going, we need a more sinister presence than just Vogel, otherwise Dexter is just too powerful and it would be sad to say goodbye to him meekly. Step it up Shotime!
Dexter: Every Silver Lining... (2013)
You are perfect the way you are!
Michael Hall directs this episode. And I believe he has played this character so much so that Dexter has oozed into his directing. The frames themselves look sinister and the interactions between Dr.Vogel and Dexter themselves, creepy. Good work I would say. The plot itself takes interesting albeit predictable twists. Deb starting to lose control, making murder a way of life "This is not the first time I shot a person and it might not be the last": is one. Does this mean Deb starts to fall under Dexter's "code"? Let's not forget that Dexter now has a new "surrogate" mother under Dr.Vogel. Will she push Dexter into thinking Deb as a threat? All interesting plots to be pursued. And the scenes between Dex and Dr.Vogel are absolutely well done since it seems so creepy, especially the closing "You are perfect the way you are" delivery. A good follow up episode to the premiere which could have been better if not for the time wasted on the Batista-Quinn subplot which just seems like fillers trying to make up the minutes. Otherwise, a crackling finale is being set up!
Dexter: A Beautiful Day (2013)
A beautiful day!
I couldn't wait to watch this episode and was not disappointed! The writers get off the blocks with a bang and we could literally see the beginning of the end for our beloved serial killer from the very first episode.
The star performer? I would say it was Jennifer Carpenter. Playing the guilt wracked Deb on a path to self destruction, she fits the role to a T. The clarity with which Dexter opens the episode couldn't end with a bigger contrast towards the end of the episode as he starts losing control and lets his "dark passenger" take over more than just once. Which leads us to the question, "Who is truly on their path to self destruction?" Not even his projections of Harry could rein him this time which sets up an interesting season ahead.
Who is this Dr.Evelyn Vogel? How does she know so much about Dexter? How many of Dexter's acts is Deb willing to cover up? How long before Dexter cracks for good and lets his dark side take over? How and when is Hannah coming back? We are left with so many questions... Looking forward to a bloody interesting end to this wonderful series. Pun intended.
Game of Thrones: The Rains of Castamere (2013)
Life in Red
I remember quitting the book franchise for quite a while because of the red wedding. It was that event, when happened, made me put down the book and just stare into space for a good while. Just absorbing the impact of it. Robb was one of my favorite characters and what he did stayed loyal to his character, principles instilled by Ned Stark and fiercely pursued by Robb in honor of his dead father. We all knew the brutality was inevitable for the King of the North, the boy who became a man. How do you film such a powerful episode?
But they managed to do it. Season 3 has been sort of a disappointment since they left out key plots, forgot about main character developments and played around with the time frames, expected when you adapt it for television. And just when I was mourning the death of another epic on the small screen, they brought it back with such a powerful episode. Michelle Fairley carries the episode with her heart-wrenching performance and her cracking, gutted pleas. Which were perfectly complemented by Richard Madden's muted shock as Robb. The silence in the end credits only added to the effect, letting us absorb the enormity of what just happened. Kudos.
I would talk about the other things that happened in the episode, but in comparison to the last few minutes, do they really matter?
