Shazam! (2019)
After Aquaman took Thor, Shazam takes Deadpool
Yup, I enjoyed this film, particularly the smaller parts about family and his history, but the larger story was muddled. Disappointed that DC is now just ripping off Marvel's style with the after-credits inserts and using the same humor, but in a more calculated and less natural manner. This is a complete take-off on Deadpool just as Aqua-dude was a Thor copy. Even the closing credits animation was reminiscent of Deadpool. Yikes! All that said, I actually enjoyed it as a lesser version of those movies. Originality isn't everything, right?
The Kleptomaniac (2014)
The Kleptomaniac is wonderful noir.
I really enjoyed this movie! Lots of suspense and just enough kitch to keep me guessing. The guy who plays the doctor has a dark thing going that scared me. Also, really liked the moody black and white thing. It is a short film that has gotten into a couple fests here and there this year, so not a big commitment if you can get a copy. The premise is a this guy cannot resist stealing. He steals from everyone and one time he comes across something he should not steal but does. I don't want to spoil it from there. It's a Twilight Zone type thing going on so if you liked Sterling's stuff you'll probably enjoy this as well. It is in black and white, but it's more of a stylistic choice to create that mood of desperation.
Robin Hood (2010)
Amazing Film on Every Level
Best movie I've seen this year so far. This movie blew me away! The art direction, photography, and especially the writing / characters! All first rate. This movie deserved much more attention and has such an authentic feel...I felt like I was in 12th Century England experiencing their problems and dilemmas.
Robin Hood was also surprisingly relevant to our current economic and foreign policies. I made a strong political statement in a subtle manner. Brian Helgeland is a master screenwriter and this movie was Ridley Scott at his absolute best. Everything I hope for when I go to see a movie, but rarely get.
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Incredible movie-making on every level.
The characters, the drama, the comedy between Han & Leia. The special effects and of course the unforgettable introduction of Yoda. The best Star Wars film of them all and deserving of a place within the IMDb top 5. Harrison Ford establishes himself as one of the most masculine action heroes ever, setting a prelude for his amazing turn as Indiana Jones. The ending, which literally leaves the audience hanging made me love the story more and left me wanting to see more of this amazing epic.
The unfortunate thing is that a film like Ordinary People, which was good, won the Oscar in 1980, but will not have nearly the impact on our culture or future film-making that both Episodes IV & V have and will continue to have.
