Warning: Spoilers
A diamond in the dirt when it comes to Netflix Originals.

I should say this movie is more a mystery/thriller with horror elements mixed in. Miss-labeling a movie with a certain genre can throw audiences off, but not so here.

Nice and original story which is also well executed. A man needs to infiltrate a cult on an island to rescue his sister who is kidnapped by them, but nothing is what it seems.

The performances are well acted and convincing. The locations that are used are nice and really give me that isolated cult vibe. The drill execution scene is brutal.

The ending was a bit of a letdown, but still a very nice watch throughout.

Oppenheimer

Warning: Spoilers
Rating a movie based on the hype it initially received is unfair, short-sighted and does not do any justice to the movie.

While this movie does feel like Oscar-bait it was still a worthwhile watch for most of the time in my opinion. Cillian Murphy delivers as he almost always does. He truly is single-handedly the best thing about this movie. The acting, set pieces, sound design and cinematography were all on point. The sequence leading up to the first successful detonation were really good and intense.

However I have a few problems with this movie. The nuke detonation itself is kinda underwhelming with all that intense buildup, however I still would like it more than a cheap CGI explosion.

The side story of the second love interest was not necessary and did nothing to move the plot forward. The nudity in these scenes also felt overdone. The I am become death line is also wasted in these scenes.

The dialogue between Oppenheimer and his love interests feel awkward and it just looks like two smart people talking about smart things.

I feel the runtime of the movie could have been shorter by at least half an hour.

The non-linear story telling is a Nolan trope, but it makes the movie which is already hard to follow even more confusing. It is just a biopic and not a mystery like Memento.

In summary, I think its good to watch once and never again.

Okja (2017)

Not OK ja?
5 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
With an ensemble cast consisting of Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano and the director of Snowpiercer you would expect something better than this pro vegan crap.

The lead girl is not enjoyable to watch as her only expression is to be mad or stupefied by her surroundings. Jake Gyllenhaal just phones in his one-dimensional performance, very disappointed with his performance here. Tilda Swinton is ok, but not anything special.

The display of good vs evil is also a bit crooked here. Paul Dano just stomps a member of his "good" ALF group because of a mistake, which the movie suggests was a good thing to do?? Is his group not supposed to refrain from violence? They also act as if they did not expect Okja to be tortured and raped in hands of Jake Gyllenhaal, it was their own plan was it not?

The forced humanizing of the superpigs is just a lazy tactic to further emphasize the obvious pro vegan agenda. IE the final part where the mother and father pig hold the barbed wire to smuggle their baby piglet out to Okja, almost Spielberg levels of fake sentiment.

The setpieces and production are okay, but overall just a bad and depressing movie that manipulates its audience.

Is one of the best science fiction movies ever. The more I watch it the more I like it, which also means it has high rewatchability.

The cast consist of some very good A-list actors with the likes of Cillian Murphy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michelle Yeoh and Rose Byrne just to name a few... And they all deliver a good performance. Never was once dissapointed with the acting.

The cinematography is very unique, the darkness with the orange shades of the sun are exceptionally executed. The FX still hold up by today's standards.

The story does not cling to one genre, this is not just another science fiction movie. It has elements of drama, thriller and horror as well. Maybe Sunshine borrows a bit from Event Horizon, which is also a movie in this category.

The characters are also not dumb. They never find themselves in a tight spot because of stupidity. Which adds to a well written story.

If you like SF, this is a must-watch in my book.

Its a fine movie that has mindless action with decent effects. Just good guys vs bad guys and robot goes rogue and then the crew has to fight the robot too.

It is no top gun, but it holds its own I guess. There is the wooden acting, cheesy dialogue and over-used clichés like the black guy dying and Russians being bad guys.

The best part about this movie has to be the set pieces, effects, locations and use of real explosions. The movie itself is really nice to look at, it just has no substance whatsoever, but that not what this movies is about.

I don't really have anything else to add except my review needs to be 600 characters long...

The Gray Man (2022)

Kinda forgettable
31 August 2022
The only scene that was actually memorable to me was the fireworks fight scene in the beginning. Ryan Gosling is rightly cast, while Chris Evans and all other villains are not. The movie has nice visuals, but it is just so boring at times plus the plot, story and character building are just non-present.

This movie seems to be heavily inspired from the Bourne trilogy, John Wick and Mission Impossible, which makes it feel really empty and void of any originality. You've seen it a million times over and even the movies it is inspired from have better execution.

When you spend millions on visuals and an A+ cast of actors, while spending 50 cents on a pen and paper for the writing you get this movie.

Gone Girl (2014)

Warning: Spoilers
Movie tries to be clever but it fails miserably. Plot holes galore. The more you think about it the worse it gets. It's long, drawn-out and has no pay-off at all. Is the point of this movie to express toxic masculinity vs toxic femininity?

The worst thing about this movie is the Gone Girl herself. Rosamund Pike's only expression is to be smug and entitled. She has average looks at best and when she cut her hair she was just plain ugly. A very badly written character.

Amy sets up her fake abduction with no information on when Ben Affleck might return home to catch her in the act.

Amy is smart enough to fake her death, but stupid enough to not see the trailer park neighbors would rob her after they see she has a load of money...

We are fed to believe a successful rich man can not give up on an average blonde bimbo that even sued him for misconduct? She murders him and nobody even investigates the crime scene?

The FBI interrogation scene with Amy at the end was just so stupid. The female cop asked logical questions and got shut down for no reason. Amy was covered with blood the entire time since the murder and only showered when she got home?? Yeah right.

We are led to believe Amy cancelled the IVF clinic's cancellation and thus is pregnant with Affleck's child??

These are just a few of the plot holes this movie has.

Warning: Spoilers
Overly emo and goth, terrible acting, bad story and worse plot and worst dialogue. There is no originality, no direction, no nothing. CG is decent but film-making wise it lacks everything.

Nothing makes sense in this movie. The leads want to dismiss the truth about being siblings just because they love each other? One character was called out for being gay or something, so there were two intertwined love triangles going on? They all dress up as if they were in a s&m party. One character was bitten by a vampire, but it only improved his eye-sight and nothing else happened.

Bad movie even for its target-audience, which is 14 year old girls. Do not watch.

Wokebulance

Warning: Spoilers
Even Jake Gyllenhaal cant save this mess, ADHD cinematography, nauseating drone shots. Too cringe and woke. Awful characters.

The movie itself can be cut down by half an hour or even more. Movie starts taking too long to get to the actual robbery scene. The actual robbery itself is stupid, how are they carrying such heavy bags of money on their back?

Anyway Yahya Abdul's character sabotages the entire plan from the get-go, why even accept the damn job?

The annoying hispanic girl tries to be so badass with her profanity but she is nothing but cringe.

Jake's death at the end you see coming from a mile away. This movie was a real chore to watch.

Verdict: Wokebulance Rating: 0/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Overrated "horror", it's just a family drama with gypsy curses. A thriller at best. The horror elements don't work at all, naked old people are not scary. The plot twist is weak and and you could smell it from a mile away.

People like to pretend Toni Collette's acting was the best part of the film, yeah no. Totally overacting with over the top crying and screaming. She looks like a borderline psycho in the entire movie.

The daughter is the part of the movie that makes the least sense. Why does have so many disabilities? Why does she cut pigeon heads? So many dumb things about this character. The trailer advertises the movie as if it were about her, but it isn't. When she dies its so stupid and the way its set up is even more silly.

The final act is like a try not to laugh challenge from youtube. The floating mother is hilarious. And the son staring in the camera in the final seconds after the final twist of him being Paimon is everyone's reaction when they watch this garbage.

A24 is nothing but over-hyped garbage.

Hulk (2003)
7/10
More of a psychological drama than a superhero movie
30 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It has its flaws like the bad execution of the comic-book style cinematography and in SOME cases outdated vfx.

Other than that this movie is the only one to truly explore Bruce Banner's past and the internal struggle he has with the Hulk and how his troubled past gives him all the anger and rage which feeds the Hulk. In this film they focus more on character building and development rather than mindless action.

The villain is well acted and memorable, his dialogue with Banner before the final showdown hits hard.

Ang Lee's Hulk (2003) did more character development for Banner in 2 hours than the entire fraud MCU in 20+ movies.

The effects are good for 2003 standards, the Hulk looks good and true to comics and keeps growing with more anger and rage. The only truly bad case of CGI was the explosion in the water when the fighter pilots drop a bomb. And let's be honest, movies that come out today also does not have good CGI either with much better technology and bigger budgets within their reach.

I think this film balances character drama and action really well. It's well paced and has a nice payoff. I think it receives flack because it is not the average superhero movie and instead tried something original.

Back when Marvel actually cared

Still is the best MCU film. Tony Stark actually has a backstory unlike all other Marvel characters and decent motivation. Good action and VFX. I think the villain is forgettable. This movie is also the only worthwile one from the Iron Man trilogy... 2 and 3 are abominations.

Beautiful cinematography, the kind you would see in a Nat Geo animal documentary. The fx is believable, sometimes the green screen is obvious, but other than that it looks absolutely real and stunning.

Unoriginal film in an oversaturated genre
9 June 2022
Another awful teenager post-apocaliptic movie like Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent.

The acting is truly awful and unconvincing with monotone linereading. Add to that the cookie-cutter characters with no development.

This movie pulls out every boring cliche known to men. Everything felt forced only to move the nonexistant plot forward.

Dont waste your time with this tripe.

Is the protagonist a deranged psychopath?
16 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason the story went like it did is because of the stupid child-abusing protagonist.

Why must she kill everyone? Other than herself saying it to her clone as a dumb excuse? The cycle repeats after everyone dies. So how is killing the way out? She is the SOLE reason everyone keeps dying.

Why doesnt she just show herself to her friends? Maybe a budget issue.

If she was aware of it all even before boarding the sailship, how did she forget?

Why does she do the same exact thing over and over? She could have saved everyone but decides to just watch and see Liam Hemsworth getting skewered like 3 times in a row. She just keeps repeating the very obvious cycle.

That pseudo open ending does not convince me at all, she will just continue being an idiot and never learn.
