Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Invincible levels of "PLEASE LET IT BE MORE"
The only reason I didn't give this a ten is because it doesn't end w this season.
I have been waiting for something like this. I love this type of structure in storytelling. Think John Wick and Kill Bill, you "know" what's going to happen, you just have to wait and see HOW it happens.
It has it all, beautiful animation, great characters, a very cool twisted monstrous villain, amazing motifs, dialogue, Japanese culture representation, original ideas, crazy action scenes and a great season finale.
If you're like me and only like action when it's well made, impactful, logical (or illogical in a good way), well timed, and satisfying, watch this. The animation is gorgeous. I guarantee that if it already peaked your interest, you are going to like it. It's so good, in fact, that I have surprisingly little say, I just wanted to make more ripples for the show in hopes of season 2.
Napoleon (2023)
Terrible movie
I was told it was bad but this is something else. Bad performances, pointless scenes, little to no emotion whatsoever, bleh! The production value is good but not even with amazing sets and costume design could Scott and his DP make exciting shots or interesting proposals. Also, terrible editing, the music is generic, boring and at times unfitting. I don't even know what to point out.
Just to illustrate: by the time Napoleon is being crowned halfway into the movie he hasn't given a speech once, won a confrontation by his own merits or done anything honorable. The longest scenes in the first half mostly have him begging for sex or being a total man child weirdo. This is in part due to the terrible cast choice of Joaquin Phoenix.
There are many lenses to see Napoleon through. The movie decides to go not for politics, nor war, or philosophy, or historical importance, not even for him as a person, but for his relationship with Josephine, which is awfully portrayed. There is never a scene where they have an enjoyable conversation. Actually there is not a single scene in the entire movie that has reasonable, interesting or even FUNCTIONAL dialogue... in a movie about one of history's greatest men. No conversations, no laughter, no chemistry, no nothing!!! Hell, you never even see a scene where France thrives! There is never context, nothing feels earned, nothing is exciting. YOU NEVER EVEN SEE A SOLDIER SHOW HIS RESPECT TOWARS HIM OR VICEVERSA UNTIL THAT SCENE WHEN HE GETS BACK FROM ELBA. The movie just assumes that the audience will feel stuff, so it does nothing. There is nothing to like, or rewatch or admire except probably the set design which is pretty cool. Impressive failure of a movie. WOW!
And don't think for a minute it's so bad it's good... it's so bad you'll want to leave the room and I hadn't felt that since I watched Valerian in 2017.
Showgirls (1995)
Seriously misinterpreted
This movie is clearly satire, the acting is often bad and lots of scenes seem overplayed... those are its only flaws -and the ending a little- and they are not bothersome at all. Characters are much deeper than they seem, actions seem to have emotional backup, the pacing is near PERFECT, it never lost my attention; huuuge deal of pros for a movie with such bad critics. Oh, and the production is surprisingly grand, the dancing scenes are amazing, especially when the viewer's perspective switches from spectator to dancing. Seriously... this is a marvelous movie. Would watch it again many times over.
Tiempo compartido (2018)
I disagree with every review posted here
I think this movie is not only great, but important. The photography is beautiful, the music and the acting are great, but the script is a masterpiece (though i can understand how it is hard to see).
I think many people are wrong by viewing this as a dark-comedy, it is no comedy at all. It is a psychological thriller that criticizes transnational corporations and how the ideology they sell harms everybody involved. From the consumer who loses everything due to the lack of interest from the company, to the couple of workers that turn on each other because of it, an enterprise that sees them as numbers (in the case of Andrés) or pawns (in the case of Gloria): sheep turned into wool; sheep turned into pseudo-wolves.
This is the first review I write in here, and I do it because I loved the movie and feel like some other people got it a bit wrong. Hope you enjoy the movie.
Pd. This type of scams that take advantage of people's ignorance, like time shares and pyramid schemes, are a big issue here in Latin America, and have become more common in recent times due to the intervention of world wide corporations on the local economy.
