Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019 Video Game)
10/10
An immensely breathtaking, challenging, and satisfying experience
13 June 2023
Sekiro sticks out in my mind as being both one of the hardest and most rewarding video games I have ever played. It is also one of the most unique games in FromSoftware's catalogue.

Sekiro may have the most satisfying gameplay I have ever experienced in a game. The extroardinary combat, movement dynamics, and level design all combine to make Sekiro endlessly fun to play.

The combat has an unbelievably steep learning curve and can be very frustrating to get the hang of. However, once mastered, it becomes one of the most enjoyable combat systems in gaming. Instead of chipping away at enemy health bars, the combat in Sekiro involves using carefully timed strikes and deflections with your sword to wear down an enemy's "posture" (represented by a "posture bar" at the top of the screen). When the posture of the enemy has been sucessfully broken, the enemy is then left open for a fatal "deathblow" strike. The catch is that enemies can deflect as well and their attacks can also break down your posture which can leave you open for high damaging attacks. In addition, to keep you on your toes the enemies will often mix in "perilous" attacks (represented by a red warning symbol) which are much harder to deflect and often require other movements to avoid such as jumping or dodging. The beauty of this combat system is that it encourages both fast paced aggression and careful defense on the player's part. Enemy posture recovers very quickly so players need to be constantly on the attack in order to be sucessful. However, enemy and especially boss attacks can come at you in the blink of an eye and the margin of error for deflection is incredibly slim. This means that the player needs to be constantly on the attack while at the same time always being ready to deflect at a moments notice. This has the affect of making combat in Sekiro feel akin to a dance, as you rhythmically alternate between attacking and defending.

The players mastery of this phenomenal combat is rigorously put to the test by Sekiro's grueling and exhilirating boss fights. Sekiro's campaign contains numerous bosses and each one is a heart-stopping duel from start to finish. The bosses push the combat system to it's absolute limit. They recover their posture incredibly quickly, attack with lightning speed, and are often capable of killing the player in no more than two hits. Many of these bosses are some of the hardest you will encounter in any game and can take players upwards of several hours to learn. Each boss has it's own unique fighting style and rhythm that the player must know inside out in order to overcome them. However, the euphoric experience of slowly mastering these bosses is something I will never forget.

Sekiro's excellent level design and traversal mechanics are another big reason as to why it is so exciting to play. Just moving from place to place in Sekiro is very engaging thanks to the grappling hook given to the player early in the game as well as the climbing and jumping mechanics. The level design complements this agile playstyle through being much more vertical in nature than FromSoftware's other works. The imposing castles and temples that the player can explore are impressively tall and both the inside of these structures as well as the outside rooftops can be explored. In addition, forested and mountainous levels both contain numerous ledges and hanging tree branches that the player can use their grappling hook or climbing abilities on. This has the added effect of giving the player multiple options when it comes to tackling enemy encounters. By staying in high, out of reach areas, the player can avoid enemies and get a better sense of their surroundings. They can more easily pick and choose which enemies they want to take on, as well as which items they want to go for. Staying in high areas also allows players to preform stealth deathblows that can kill most enemies in a single hit if they are careful not to be seen. Utilizing agile traversal and stealth in this way encourages players to be creative and experiment with how they want to progress through the game. When these mechanics are combined with FromSoftware's stunning interconnected and non linear world design, you get some of the most fun gaming exploration of all time.

The world and level design is also backed by astonishingly detailed art direction rooted in ancient Japanese culture. The dazzling budda shrines, cherry blossoms, and spectacularly large temples are nothing short of visual eye candy.

Overall Sekiro is a hugely challenging but also completely unforgettable experience. It is not for everyone and demands extreme focus, percision, and patience from those who play it. However, those with the determination to stick with it till the end will find a remarkably enthralling adventure well worth the hundreds of gruelling deaths.

One of the greatest Spider-Man films ever made
5 June 2023
"Across the Spider-Verse" is quite simply one of the best comic book films in years as well as a near perfect sequel. It builds upon the already fantastic "Into the Spider-Verse" to create a truly captivating, thrilling, and unforgettable experience.

The first film contained some of the most visually striking animation ever put to screen. It broke new ground when it came to how animated films are presented and filmed. It is a testament to the quality of Across the Spider Verse that it actually manages to improve upon the art design of it's predecessor while still keeping the genuinely unique style that made the first film so beloved. Almost every shot in Across the Spider-Verse could be framed in a painting. The dazzling visuals are so rich with detail that they often feel as though they pop off the screen. In addition, the extraordinary use of colour in the film in regards to the action and storytelling is absolutely spectacular. The action sequences are also so fast paced and dynamically animated that they can feel almost overwhelming.

However, the stellar art design is nowhere near the only thing that makes this film so good. The characters and story are both remarkably well written and relatable. The characters are likeable with complex motivations and are brought to vivid life by an exceptionally talented voice cast. Morover, the dialogue between characters is smart, witty, and flows incredibly well. The story is also a significant improvement from Into the Spider-Verse. It understands the core themes and values of Spider-Man as a character and knows exactly how to challenge, subvert, and build upon them in inventive ways. The story grounds the breathtaking action and otherwordly plot in human emotion which greatly contributes to making the film feel immersive and personal for the audience. Morover, the story contains several incredibly gripping revalations, and moments of intense character drama that will keep you firmly on the edge of your seat.

Overall, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a generationally great superhero film. With it's awe-inspiring visual style, memorable characters, clever dialogue, and emotional rollercoaster of a story, it is an instant classic and a must see for any Spider Man fan.

A petrifying hidden horror gem
10 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Gonjiam Haunted Asylum is definitely not the most thought provoking or complex horror film out there. However, it is undoubtedly one of the most terrifying.

The film uses the found footage camera style in inventive and nightmarish ways. It is a prime example of how sometimes less is more. Paranormal entities are often hidden just out of view or at the edge of the frame. Throughout the film we only get a few short glimpses of the ghosts that are haunting the TV crew. But this only makes the moments when they do appear all the more frightening.

The film also does not contain any significant jumpscares or moments of gore. Instead, it leaves many of it's scares up to the viewers imagination, which is far more terrifying. Morover, the film draws upon it's undeniably creepy setting and hair raising sound design to create a truly horrifying atmosphere.

Overall, Gonjiam is definitely one of the most underrated, creative, entertaining, and scary found footage horror movies I have watched in a long time.

Hereditary (2018)
10/10
A suspenseful and frightening masterpiece of psychological horror
9 May 2023
Ari Aster's Hereditary is undoubtedly one of the scariest and most complex horror films I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The film tells the masterfully crafted and bone chilling tale of a family's dark secrets and how those secrets have laid a curse on the family's newest generation.

The acting from the entire cast is stellar. Toni colette gives nothing less than the performance of a lifetime as the film's lead Annie. She expertly balances many extreme emotions such as anger, despair, and guilt, coming across as an incredibly relatable and sympathetic character. Alex Wolffe gives an equally phenomenal performance as Annie's son Peter, an adolescent racked with guilt and uncomfortable revelations about his place in the family. In addition, Miley Shapiro delivers one of the best child performances I've seen in years as Charlie, the emotionally cold and distant daughter of Annie.

Using these spectacular acting preformances along with a remarkably well written script, the film tells a gripping and harrowing story. The story is rich with deep symbolism regarding the stages of grief, and parental neglect. These themes are deeply relatable for many viewers and this allows the viewer to easily sympathize with the immense plight of the characters.

The film superbly utilizes cinematography, sound design, and genuinely shocking imagery to create an unbelievably freaky viewing experience. The numerous wide shots combined with the dark and shadowy lighting allow the suspense to build to near unbearable levels. There are many long, sustained sequences of terror throughout the film that can be so incredibly unsettling that they are almost unwatchable.

Morover, the nightmarish imagery throughout the film will chill you to the bone. Severed heads. Satanic rituals, and swarms of insects are just some of the skin crawling sights you may see in Hereditary.

The horrific scare sequences are also made even creepier through Hereditary's blood curdling sound design. The chilling musical score along with the numerous terrifying screams heard all through the film will undoubtedly leave most viewers petrified.

Overall, watching Hereditary for the first time is an experience you will never forget. The amazing characters, astonishingly inventive scares, and incredibly poignant story make it a film that should be seen by anyone with even a passing interest in psychological horror stories.

Breaking Bad (2008–2013)
10/10
Nothing short of flawless
17 April 2023
Breaking Bad is a show that needs no introduction. It is the single highest rated TV show on this site and has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic TV shows of all time!

However, the show has definitely earned it's legendary reputation. I genuinely struggle to think of a single glaring flaw that the show has. It does everything so well!

I don't think it's much of a hottake to say that Breaking Bad's greatest strengths by far are it's characters and acting. I am not exaggerating when I say that Breaking Bad may have the most believable, captivating, and complex cast of characters ever commited to television.

Many have talked at length about the morality of Breaking Bad's characters. Whether they are good or evil, or if some of their reprehensible actions are justified. This, in my opinion, is the beauty of the characters. Because they have such believable motivations, and multi-layered personalities, everyone who watches Breaking Bad can come away with different thoughts on the characters. Some may see Walter White as a monstrous wolf in sheep's clothing who only cares about his own ego and nothing else, while others may see him as a good man deep down who did awful things for the sake of protecting those he loves.

Speaking of Walt, Bryan Cranston delivers what can only be described as the performance of a lifetime as the show's deeply flawed anti-hero Walter White. Cranston conveys so many tangible human emotions throughout his time on the show that it almost defies believe. In the same scene he can expertly portray feelings of anger, pride, despair, satisfaction, vengefulness, and many other emotions in a way that remains unparalleled in mainstream television.

However, as good as Cranston's performance is, it is far from the only good one. Every single actor in the gigantic ensemble cast delivers a throughly memorable performance in their own way. From Anna Gunn as Walt's increasingly distaught wife Skylar, to Dean Norris as his heroic but secretly insecure brother in law Hank, to Giancarlo Esposito as the cunning, cold, and deadly crime lord Gustavo Fring.

These stellar acting performances are also complimented by a brilliantly written and enthralling story. Some have described the story of Breaking Bad as being almost Shakespearean in nature, this is unquestionably true. The tragic hero, the ambiguous seperation of good and evil, the consequences of greed, and revenge (all hallmarks of a Shakespearean tragedy) are just some of the many complex themes and ideas present within the story of Breaking Bad.

Throughout the story, characters are often forced to make extremely challenging and morally ambiguous decisions that blur the lines between good and evil. Morover, the story contains many shocking twists and turns that will keep you firmly on the edge of your seat.

In terms of the art of filmaking Breaking Bad is also incredibly well made. The stunning Neo Western cinematography conveys the vast, lawless, and barren wastelands that the show takes place in. In addition, the show masterfully uses lighting, sound design, and camerawork to highten the suspense of the story.

Overall, if you haven't seen this show yet for any reason, WATCH IT! It just does everything right. From the modern yet distinctly timeless story, to the absolutely breathtaking acting performances, to the astonishingly well written characters. It is truly one of the most unforgettable, thrilling, and fascinating shows you will ever watch.

The Shining (1980)
10/10
An unbelievably absorbing and bone chilling horror classic
9 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Shining is quite simply one of the greatest psychological horror films ever made. It is a nightmarish and riveting journey into the depths of madness, bolstered by spectacular cinematography and an unforgettable musical score.

The film boasts a huge and imposing setting. The infamous Overlook Hotel feels impossibly massive and isolating. It completely dwarfs the characters and it's sheer size immediately puts the audience on edge.

This intimidating setting is also enhanced by some of the best cinematography and camerawork in the history of the horror genre. Numerous wide shots convey the daunting scale of the hotel. Morover, revolutionary first person and third person tracking shots constantly follow the characters as they traverse the hotel's unusually lengthy hallways. These tracking shots build suspense like few other horror films, as they keep you right with the characters, giving the film an immersive, vivid quality.

The film is chalked full of downright macabre and ghastly imagery, much of which has since become iconic. Set pieces such as the elevator of blood, the creepy twin girls, and the ghoulish woman of room 237 are sure to make even the most jaded viewer's skin crawl. However, what makes this imagery truly memorable is how hauntingly ambiguous it all is. We never truly find out if the hotel is actually haunted, if the protagonist is simply losing his mind, or (most likely) a bit of both. These types of explanations are all left up to the viewer's imagnination which makes the film all the more hair raising.

The performances from all of the main actors are remarkably diverse and memorable. Jack Nicholson delivers one of the most unforgettable performances in horror film history as Jack Torrance. His performance is frighfully over the top while also still remaining just believable enough to keep you thoroughly invested. Shelly Duval gives an unsettlingly scared and vulnerable performance as Jack's wife Wendy that helps to keep you on the edge of your seat as you pray for her survival. And Danny Lloyd gives one of the best child performances of all time as the psychic son of Jack and Wendy.

The entire film is also intensified by an absolutely blood chilling musical score that sends shivers down the spine like few others in the horror genre.

Overall, the Shining is a classic masterpiece brought to life by one of the greatest film directors of all time (Stanley Kubrick). It's a film that masterfully gets under your skin and stays there. The film is without a doubt an essential watch for any fan of the horror genre.

Jurassic Park (1993)
10/10
One of the finest adventure films in motion picture history
8 February 2023
This film needs no introduction. It is not an exaggeration to say that Jurassic Park inspired an entire generation of audiences. It ignited public intrest in dinosaurs as well as filmaking, the legacy of which lasted for decades after it's release. It is also undoubtedly one of the most thrilling and exciting films in Steven Spielberg's all time great filmography. Jurassic Park suceeds on so many levels that I'm not sure if I can cover them all in one review.

The film's most obvious strength is it's renowned special effects. The animatronics and CGI used to bring the dinosaurs to life are revolutionary in how realistic they are. Morover, the way Spielberg blends the animatronics and CGI together (through state of the art cinematography) is simply flawless and greatly heightens the suspense and larger than life magnitude of certain scenes.

The sound design in Jurassic Park is another one of it's biggest strengths. It is absolutely outstanding. The blood chilling roar of the tyrannosaurus rex, the sinister snarls of the velociraptors, and the colossal footsteps of giant creatures bigger than a house. They are all conveyed with stunning vividness. In addition, the legendary musical score, composed by the always masterful John Williams, may just be the most awe inspiring film score of all time. No other film soundtrack has EVER sent chills through my entire body quite like the score of Jurassic Park.

Spielberg's set design and cinematography for this film is also utterly stunning. Large portions of Jurassic park were filmed on remote sections of the Hawaiian Islands, portraying the isolated jungle setting perfectly. The grand and wide camerawork also distinctly portrays the immense size and scale of the film's set pieces in a truly unforgettable way.

All of the main actors also give solid performances. The characters feel like real people, and as such, are very easy to care about. The silly antics of Jeff Goldbloom's iconic Ian Malcolm character also provide the film with surprisingly good humor and levity.

Overall, Jurassic Park is one of the most electrifying, exciting, and enchanting films ever made. It is the stunning vision of one of the greatest minds in Hollywood, and I believe it will continue to remain an essential film experience for generations to come.

Unforgiven (1992)
10/10
Clint Eastwood's compelling and haunting masterwork
7 February 2023
The legacy of Hollywood star Clint Eastwood's career was set in stone with the release of Unforgiven. A riveting, stunning Western about the merciless reality of the American Old West.

This film was Clint Eastwood's final dive into the Western genre, a genre he greatly revered, and the genre that kickstarted his legendary career. As such, he put every ounce of his creative input into this film, and it shows in every aspect.

The story is a masterful dissection of the myths and legends associated with the "Wild West". There are no clear heroes or villains in Unforgiven. The life of a gunslinger is also not shown as the fun, consequence free life of adventure it has been portrayed as in so many other Western stories.

The world of Unforgiven is a bleak, pragmatic, and cruel place where only those with true grit survive. The characters are all morally grey, flawed, and down to earth. In general, this style of world building is much closer to the reality of what living in the "Wild West" of America was like. Gunfights are wild and chaotic, most characters are very dishonourable in some way, and killing is portrayed as having weighty, lasting consequences on the killer's psyche.

The film's incredibly vivid cinematography reflect's it's desolate style while still remaining uniquely spectacular to look at. Shots convey vast stretches of barren grassland, scrubland, and mountain ranges in addition to ominous, stormy nights.

Unforgiven also boasts an allstar cast, with greats such as Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, and of course, Clint Eastwood himself in the lead role. All of these talented veteran actors deliver thoroughly memorable performances. Freeman's character provides much needed light heartedness to such a nail-biting movie. Richard Harris realistically portrays the self centered, confident nature of his character while also showing the character's hidden cowardice equally well. Gene Hackman commands the screen as the film's brutally cynical antagonist, Sheriff: Little Bill, and his performance is one you will most certainly not soon forget. Eastwood is completely in his element as the film's retired gunslinger protagonist. However, he portrays a much more vulnerable side to his character's iconic personna, while also delivering on all the badass stoicism that you would expect from an Eastwood performance.

Overall, Unforgiven is a thought provoking, honest movie that delivers a unique and enthralling story under the backdrop of the iconic Western genre. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest Westerns of all time, and among the best highlights of Clint Eastwood's long career.

Goodfellas (1990)
10/10
One of the most intense and electric crime dramas ever to grace the silver screen
3 February 2023
Godfellas in many ways represents the peak of Martin Scorsese's career as a filmaker. It is a classic in the truest sense of the word. Rarely have I ever seen a film that is as consistently memorable and captivating as Goodfellas. This is due to a variety of reasons

The acting from all the major characters in this film is unbelievably good. The characters of Tommy, Jimmy, and Henry (played by Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Ray Liotta respectively) in particular are given larger than life, commanding preformances by their respective actors that do wonders to keep the audience on the edge of their seats for long periods of time.

The direction and cinematography of Goodfellas is thoroughly exceptional. The camerawork is remarkably engrossing, almost acting as it's own character. The camera in this movie is constantly moving, relentlessly stalking the characters, and it is used masterfully to heighten the suspense and drama of many key moments throughout the story. There are also many unforgettable set pieces throughout the film which perfectly convey just how unforgiving and frantic the life of a Mobster is.

The screenplay and writing of the characters is also absolutely stellar. The characters are cleverly written and portrayed so that they are undoubtedly evil and amoral, but not amoral enough to not get invested in their survival. The scenes of dialogue between the characters are also unbelievably tense, and nail biting, to the point that it can feel very hard to watch.

The entire pace of this film is incredibly fast and unrelenting. There is NEVER a dull moment at any point during Goodfellas. There is always something going on and the film grabs your attention and holds it like few others.

Overall, Goodfellas is, in my opinion, Scorsese's masterpiece. It is a iconic classic of the gangster genre and a watching it is an experience that you will never forget.

One of the most epic, breathtaking, and unforgettable films you will ever see
31 January 2023
The Return of the King is the renowned final chapter in Peter Jackson's near flawless adaptations of J. R. R Tolkien's legendary Lord of the Rings fantasy novels. It is quite simply a masterpiece on nearly every level and one of my personal favourite films of all time.

The film boasts an emotionally powerful and moving story of how sheer perseverance, love, loyalty and friendship are more important qualities than mere physical strength. It also brilliantly showcases how even the smallest person can accomplish great feats of heroism and courage. Many of the most emotional scenes in the film are after the great battles have died down and the characters share intimate, bittersweet, and touching moments with each other. Some of these moments are enough to bring tears from nearly anyone's eyes.

This timeless story is elevated by what can only be described as a near flawless cast. The amount of acting talent on display here is astounding with greats like Sir lan Mckellen, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Sean Austin, Andy Serkis, Karl Urban, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, and Kate Blanchette all giving memorable performances in an enormous ensemble cast. In particular the characters Gandalf (Mckellen), Aragorn (Mortensen), Gollum (Serkis), Frodo (Wood), and Sam (Austin) are given masterful performances that perfectly bring the characters to life.

The Return of the King's spectacular visuals are some of the finest in the history of blockbuster filmmaking. The larger than life cinematography vividly conveys the unimaginable vastness of Middle Earth. Grand, sweeping shots of mountain ranges, nearly endless fields, volcanoes, gigantic ancient cities, and other arresting vistas are shown with stunning detail. The way Jackson effortlessly blends CGI locales with real places in these shots is something I have not seen done nearly as well in any other movie outside the other Lord of the Rings films.

On the subject of CGI, the special effects work for this film is truly state of the art. The impossibly realistic motion capture on Gollum's face, along with the marvellously sinister monster and creature designs are both impressive to behold.

This great special effects work and the audacious cinematography both work in perfect union during any of The Return of the King's jaw dropping battle sequences. The battles in this film are events that cannot be described with words. They simply must be seen to be believed. I do not speak lightly when I say that Return of The King has some of the most epic, monumental, and blood pumping battle scenes in movie history. The surprisingly tight choreography, and overwhelming visual spectacle of these scenes is enough to make them endlessly enjoyable on every re-watch.

These unbelievable action sequences are enhanced further by a chilling, awe inspiring musical score by composer Howard Shore. This score also permeates the film's more quiet character moments too where it is serene and beautiful to listen to. It works wonders to elevate these scenes as well

Overall, The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King is one of the purest examples of an emotional rollercoaster you will find in American Cinema. It can make you cry, cheer, and smile like almost no other film. It is a timeless iconic masterpiece that will never be forgotten by those who view it.

Coppola's Vietnam war epic is exceptionally gripping, dark, and unforgettable
31 January 2023
Apocalypse now is a haunting, ambitious exploration into how war affects the human soul. It is a film you surely won't forget in a hurry.

The acting performances are superb across the board with all time greats such as Marlon Brando, Robert Duval, and Martin Sheen delivering nuanced, larger than life performances that command your attention whenever the are on screen.

The cinematography throughout the film is extraordinary to say the least. The foreboding lighting and shadows of many shots, the nightmarishly surreal visual style, and the claustrophobia of the dense jungle setting all help to create a distinctly oppressive atmosphere.

The film's stunning action is another one of its major strengths. Most of the jaw dropping battle sequences were done almost entirely with practical effects and stunts and it shows. These scenes are also remarkably well shot and choreographed. All the explosions, attack helicopters, and brutal killings feel so vivid and immersive that it is almost overwhelming

The story is also a masterclass in psychological suspense and tension, with many shocking surprises to further help keep you firmly at the edge of your seat for the film's entire runtime.

Overall, Apocalypse Now is a truly great, astonishing piece of cinema. It's dark tone and themes, powerfully surreal visuals, and enthralling action make it a film every movie lover should see at least once in their life.

Spielberg's harrowing and heart wrenching masterpiece
28 January 2023
Helmed by one of the greatest directors of all time in Steven Spielberg, Schindler's list is undoubtedly one of the most powerful, unforgettable, and chilling movies ever made.

The film boasts a phenomenal cast with the three main stars, Liam Nesson, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, turning in some of the most believable and human acting performances I have ever seen. Nesson is particularly memorable as the film's protagonist Oskar Schindler. He masterfully conveys Schindler's slow transformation from a greedy opportunistic businessman who shamelessly profits off the suffering of World War 2 to an empathetic hero who saves over a thousand human lives.

These phenomenal acting performances are enhanced by a brilliantly written screenplay which emphasizes the flaws, humanity, and moral complexity of the characters.

Cinematography and visuals are another area where this film is near perfect. The choice to shoot the film in mostly black and white works very well here as it helps to fully immerse the viewer into the oldschool time period that the film is set in. The brief flashes of colour seen during the film are used to powerfully emphasize the importance of certain imagery.

The film does not hold back in the slightest when portraying the horrors of the Holocaust. In fact, Schindler's List is perhaps the most realistic depiction of this genocide ever put to screen. The nightmarish and grisly violence seen in the film feels as if it is happening to real, helpless people and as such is absolutely gut wrenching. The film also accurately showcases how horrendously Jews were treated in the Nazi labor camps and it is sickening to watch. Truly Schindler's List can be said to have some of the most disturbing and shocking scenes in motion picture history, however it never feels exploitative. It simply feels like Spielbergs true to life recreation of one of the most horrible atrocities of the 20th century.

However, despite all the bloody carnage, fear, and dread that the film conveys, it still has plenty of uplifting qualities. The film showcases both the absolute worst and best of what human beings are capable of, and it does so with remarkable care. It is truly inspiring.

Overall, Schindler's List is a timeless, compelling, and moving masterpiece. It is a prime example of a film everyone should watch at least once in their life and I believe it will continue to stand the test of time for years to come.

Parasite (2019)
10/10
Gripping, masterfully crafted thriller with a clever streak of black comedy
23 January 2023
There are a lot of words that can be used to describe director Bong Joon Ho's Parasite. It is equally parts darkly humorous, thought provoking, relatable, and frightening.

The first half of the film plays out like a wickedly diabolical black comedy. As the cunning, yet relatable underclass Kim family deviously schemes to infiltrate the much wealthier and more fortunate Park family.

The kim family's deceitful schemes are portrayed as slightly mean spirited but also deeply relatable. We understand why the Kim family is doing what they are doing. Their situation is horrible. They live in a claustrophobic, bug infested, dirty house and (despite being hard working and intelligent) barely make enough money to make ends meet. Yet, the film somehow never feels as if it is openly supporting what the family is doing.

The awful and desperate nature of the kim family's lives, (along with how it contrasts with the much more lavish, carefree life of the Park family) is brilliantly conveyed through the film's masterful cinematography. The camerawork and lighting is at times surreally beautiful and at other times horribly uncomfortable to look at.

You feel the claustraphobia and discomfort that the Kim family must endure in their own home everyday of their lives and their desperate longing to experience a fleeting glimpse of the life of comfort that the Park's live.

As a result, though you do not necessarily agree with the actions of the Kims, it is easy to delight in their perverse exploitation of the rich and powerful. This is rather obviously where most of the film's memorable comedy derives from. Delivered through a witty and cleverly written script, the comedic side of the film is incredibly entertaining and becomes even more so on repeat viewings due to the more subtle aspects of it.

This rather light hearted and satirical tone completely changes in the film's second and third acts through the introduction of a shocking, riveting, and complex plot twist that makes you question everything you found delightful about the first act.

The film is very suspenseful, intense and morally gray in this second half. You genuinely have no idea which characters are in the right or wrong, and the tension continues building until the film's hauntingly dreadful conclusion.

Overall, Parasite is an incredible film in every aspect. The acting is exceptional across the board with every actor turning in relatable and undeniably human preformances. The characters are superbly written with realistic and very relatable goals and motivations. The world of Parasite feels remarkably well realized and lived in. And the entire film is thoroughly entertaining and nail-biting while also managing to be endlessly complex and thought provoking. In short, it is nothing short of a masterpiece. A film everyone should see at least once.

Bloodborne (2015 Video Game)
10/10
A masterful blend of horror epic and brutally difficult action RPG
14 December 2022
Upon playing FromSoftwares gothic horror masterpiece, Bloodborne, it is immediately apparent that the game is the very definition of a passion project.

I don't think I have ever seen a video game with a world as detailed and utterly enthralling as Bloodborne. The environments are as nightmarish as they are beautiful and captivating to explore. The game's imposing cities take heavy inspiration from English Victorian era architecture. They are filled with larger than life gothic cathedrals, clocktowers, mansions, castles, and other imposing structures that are undeniably spectacular. The sky is a stunning blood red. The alleyways and streets within the cities are claustrophobic, dark, spooky places where monstrous enemies wait around every corner to surprise you! Almost every area in the game is remarkably immersive thanks in part to this stunning art design, as well as the bone chilling sound design.

The horrifying sounds of Bloodborne are wrought with disturbing bloodcurdling screams, the menacing howls of werewolfs, and the snarls of ghastly beasts. This type of sound design is present in nearly every area, and this, combined with the aforementioned foreboding architecture, has the effect of making the player constantly tense and on edge in nearly every area.

The game's story and dialogue as well as the art design for the characters in the first half of the game also take heavy influence from the works great Victorian horror authors such as Bram Stoker, and Edgar Allan Poe. In the second half, the game becomes much more similar to an H. P. Lovecraft story, with numerous cosmic horror themed imagery and storytelling. This unique style gives the game a sense of personality and identity not present within most games in Bloodborne's genre. It also makes the game feel fresh and distinct from other, more traditional fantasy RPGs.

However, if Bloodborne was all style and no substance it would not be considered a masterpiece. Luckily, Bloodborne's gameplay systems are every bit as masterful as it's art and world design.

Bloodborne's level design is some of the best in the gaming industry (typical of FromSoftware), with numerous shortcuts, optional paths, and even whole optional areas that greatly reward exploration on the player's part. The varied enemy design and layouts throughout the levels is also top notch. Every area in Bloodborne has it's own unique enemies with movesets completely different from enemies in previous areas. This helps keep players engaged with the game as they uncover new regions.

The combat system of Bloodborne is another one of the games major strengths. The main unique feature of Bloodborne's combat system that distinguishes it from FromSoftware's other soulsborne games is it's "trick weapon" system. Every weapon in Bloodborne has the ability to transform into an entirely different weapon with a completely different moveset from the base weapon. This allows the player to exucute a great variety of combo attacks with their weapon, by switching back and forth between the weapon's two forms.

When this system is combined with the fact that every weapon in Bloodborne has a totally unique moveset, you get a combat system with an immense amount of replayability. It is incredibly fun to test out different weapons on repeat playthroughs and this is one of the main reasons why the game has maintained a consistent playerbase for so many years since it's release.

Another unique feature of Bloodborne's combat system is how thoroughly it rewards aggression. Bloodborne features a "rally" system which allows the player to gain a portion of health back if struck by an enemy through attacking the enemy in return. Morover, the dodge roll of the Soulsborne games has been replaced with a quickstep dodge with more invincibility frames, encouraging players to dodge into their enemies aggressively. In addition, the shields of the Dark Souls games have been replaced with guns which, when shot at an enemy right before they attack, can stun them, giving the player the opportunity to counter with a high damaging strike known as a "visceral attack". All of these combat features reward an aggressive, in your face playstyle which makes the combat of Bloodborne an endless adrenaline rush.

The player's knowledge and skill with this combat system is also rigorously tested by Bloodborne's many challenging and creatively designed boss battles. The boss roster of Bloodborne (especially in the highly acclaimed Old Hunters DLC) is phenomenal. Bloodborne's best bosses are an outstanding combination of stunningly grotesque visual design, deeply tragic lore, and challenging attack patterns that reward the aggressive playstyle Bloodborne attempts to cultivate within it's players. Despite how monstrous and aggressive some of the bosses can be, players must learn to overcome their fear and become just as aggressive and ruthless as the bosses if they wish to slay them. Some of the boss fights have since become some of my all time favourites. Many of the bosses can also be incredibly challenging and are capable of taking players hours to finally conquer them. However, much like FromSoftware's other Souls games, this always rewards patient players with a great sense of accomplishment whein they finally do overcome the boss that has been killing them over and over again.

The experience of battling these incredible bosses is also further enhanced by Bloodborne's epic and haunting musical score. Many of the soundtracks for the bosses have a chilling choir element to them that makes them absolutely eargasmic to listen to.

Overall, when all of these elements are put together. The extrodinary art design, the marvelously detailed world, the deeply memorable storytelling, the unique combat system, and the unforgettable bosses. You get an experience that is more than worthy of being called one of the greatest gaming experiences of all time.

Incredibly suspenseful and bone chilling crime thriller is a masterpiece
9 December 2022
David fincher's Seven, is a poignant and deeply disturbing classic of the crime thriller genre. The film is rich with talented preformances, a smart, memorable script, a haunting score, wickedly grisly set pieces, and one of the most menacing villains ever put to screen (courtesy of the great Kevin Spacey).

The film explores the most heinous of what human beings are capable of, and it does so with stunning proficiency. The film's setting is undoubtedly one of it's strongest attributes. The film does a great job establishing the city in which it takes place as the most awful cesspit imaginable. The apartments and homes are all run down and dirty, the streets are filled with cramped alleyways, and disgusting crimes seem to occur like clockwork. When it comes to the ghoulish, seven deadly sin inspired murders of the film's infamous serial killer, they are all perfectly conveyed through spine chillingly realistic set pieces that are sure to burn themselves into the audience's psyche once the film is over.

Another huge strength of the film is it's acting preformances. A large portion of the most dramatic scenes in the film are mainly carried by stellar acting alone. The acting for every single character is phenomenal, and even characters who just show up for one scene, all do an exceptional job. In particular, the preformances of the main detectives Somerset and Mills (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt), as well as the unforgettably threatening serial killer villain John Doe are particularly remarkable.

These acting preformances are complemented by an outstandingly effective script which expertly emphasizes the humanity of each of the characters (even the serial killer) while also doing a great job at keeping the story fresh and unpredictable.

However, the biggest strength of the film, by far, is it's masterfully crafted villain. The serial killer John Doe is without a doubt one of the most compelling, disturbing, and unforgettable movie villains of all time. He is the polar thematic opposite of the two detectives, and watching how his horrific plan unfolds over the course of the movie is incredibly engrossing.

Overall, there is never a dull moment in Seven. David Fincher's nail-biting, ghastly masterpiece manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for it's entire runtime and it is a movie that you surely won't forget in a hurry.

Elden Ring (2022 Video Game)
10/10
An extrodinary adventure in an enormous and gripping world
10 November 2022
Elden Ring was the first FromSoftware game that I completed. Once done, I went back and played some of their previous titles and to be honest, many of them felt positively small and limiting compared to Elden Ring.

Elden Ring is the definition of a genre defining experience. It pulls from the best aspects of both RPG and openworld games. Expertly combining the two genres together to create a truly absorbing experience.

Let's start with Elden Ring's most obvious strength, it's impossibly huge and complex open world (known as the Lands Between). Elden Ring may just have the most memorable open world that I have seen in gaming. It's only competition is Read Dead 2, but even then, I don't think the world of that game quite compares to the sheer level of detail and care showcased in Elden Ring.

The world is about as densely packed as you can get. Everywhere you turn there is always something interesting to see or do. Varied enemies, gigantic secret areas, hidden loot, and massive bosses can all be found plentifully throughout the world.

The world keeps getting larger and larger as the player progresses through the game. Just when you think that you have seen it all, you uncover a new area which dwarfs the last one you just spent hours exploring!

Some of the underground areas in the game are also just as massive as the aboveground areas and are very easy to miss. The game truly does reward the player for exploring in big ways.

The visually arresting environments are stunningly varied in terms of artistic design. Many of them take inspiration from Celtic, Greek, and Norse architecture. Players can expect to traverse gargantuan cities, imposing castles, vast fields, forests, caves, villages, and even secret underground civilizations.

However, despite how gigantic the open world is, the brilliantly expansive, interconnected dungeon levels that the souls series is known for are still here and seemelessly integrated into the open world.

Morover, within Elden Ring, this type of level design is in quite possibly the best state it's ever been in. Giant interconnected cities and castles such as Castle Stormveil, Raya Lucaria Academy, and Lyndell the Royal Capital, are undoubtedly some of the most impressively designed levels FromSoftware has ever made. These massive structures contain numerous shortcuts, optional passage ways, as well as varied enemy design and placement that make exploration through them endlessly enjoyable

In addition to all this, each locale within the world has enthralling lore that the player may uncover if they are thorough. It is important to note that FromSoftware's signature obtuse and cryptic storytelling is still here. Though this may put off some people, I personally had a blast discovering the history of the Lands Between and how each of the numerous NPCs fit into the world. Morover, much of this lore takes fascinating inspiration from real life mythologies, including those of the ancient Greeks, Celtics, and Egyptians.

Speaking of NPCs, Elden Ring boasts one of the most interesting character rosters of any FromSoftware game. Most of the main players such as Lunar Princess Ranni, Iron Fist Alexander, Blaidd the Wolf, and White Mask Varre are very interesting characters with great voice acting, and memorable dialogue. Many of these characters also have phenomenal side quests attached to them, some of which unlock huge new areas of the map, and even lead to new endings.

However, the phenomenal world and characters would be nothing without satisfying gameplay to go along with them and Elden Ring more than delivers on this front as well. The bulk of your time in Elden Ring will be spent traversing the world on horseback and engaging in the game's unimaginably diverse combat system.

Elden RIng's combat is a stellar blend of FromSoftware's previous combat systems. The patented mechanics of rolling, parrying, and blocking all return with exceptional polish. However, without a doubt the main edge of Elden Ring's combat system is it's mind boogling diversity.

There is an almost inconcievable amount of weapons in Elden Ring and ontop of that there is an even greater amount of "Ashes Of War" (powerful special attack skills that can be attached to your weapon and modified to be equipped with any combination of stats). This creates a seemingly endless variety of playstyles for players to experiment with in both PVE and PVP. No two Ashes of War are the same and this variety also allows for tons of replayability, as players seek to try different weapon combinations to create the strongest and most spectacular builds possible. While some of these special attack skills are indeed overpowered, (especially in regards to PVE) the sheer variety of viable skills keeps the combat from ever getting stale to those with the willingness and creativity to experiment.

The only issue I have with the combat is the spirit ash system. Players have the option to collect "spirit ashes". Allies who can be summoned at will to fight enemies alongside the player. Though this system does have it's positives, such as offering casual players who find the game too hard a way out, it also has major drawbacks. Those being that spirits can often completely trivialize enemy encounters and somewhat negate the need to effectively learn the fundementals of the combat system. However, considering that spirit ashes are a niche playstyle that only certain players will utilize, it is a minor complaint in the face of everything that Elden Ring's combat gets right.

The players mastery of this great combat system is frequently tested by Elden Ring's legion of boss battles and challenging enemies. There is one major critique I have with the bosses as well which I will go over now before we talk positives. Though pratically all of the main story related bosses (and even some of the side bosses) are phenomenal, there are times when Elden Ring's bosses do lean towards quantity over quality. There is an unfortunate amount of duo "gank" bosses (a team of two bosses which the player must fight at once). None of these 2v1 gank fights are properly balanced in favour of the player. I believe that FromSoft expected players to use spirit ashes for some of these encounters and did not think of the need to balance them for solo players which is rather dissapointing (especially considering the Souls Series' history of phenomenal gank bosses).

In addition, the game does sometimes reuse the same enemy and boss a little too much which can end up getting old. However, (as with the spirit ash system) these are both minor complaints which did not majorly affect my enjoyment with the game at all.

The majority of Elden Ring's enemies are creative along with being very fun and challenging to fight against. Some of the enemies in this game are so spectacular that they end up being better than some full fledged boss fights from the previous games, which is unbelievable!

The bosses in Elden Ring' s main story are also all excellent in my opinion. They have tremendous visual spectacle, and are remarkably nail biting to go up against. Many of them boast insanely complex, powerful, and quick attack combos which force players to be patient and learn to counter their vicious assaults effectively. Due to this, most of them are EXTREMELY challenging! Many of them took me hours to conquer and one boss in particular holds the distinction of being the hardest boss I have ever encountered in a video game (if you have played the game you know which boss I am talking about). However, despite the challenge, I rarely felt as if my deaths to these foes were unavoidable. Around 95% of the time when I died, I felt it was my fault, and as a result, the feeling when I finally conquered these immense challenges was incredibly euphoric.

In addition, the soundtracks for many of these boss encounters is some of the best in FromSoft's history. The music for these battles is always magnificent and exciting, greatly adding to the entertainment of the fight.

Overall, elden ring is a truly great, dare I say timeless, experience. It is not without it's flaws but they are massively outweighed by everything the game does right. The level of freedom that the game provides the player in terms of how they want to progress, where they want to go in the world, and how they approach the combat is truly top notch. When you combine this with astonishing world design, stunning art direction, captivating lore, and unfathomably diverse combat, as well as the tremendously unforgettable bosses and enemies, you get a game worthy of being called a masterpiece.

P.T. (2014 Video Game)
10/10
The scariest piece of media I have EVER seen!
8 November 2022
If you are one of the lucky few who still owns, or otherwise has access to P. T. proceed with caution.

I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say that this game was so scary that there were times where I had to stop playing! It is honestly so terrifying that it makes most horror movies look positively tame in comparison!

This game truly frightened me in a way that I had never experienced before, and this was due to the many key aspects of horror game design that P. T. does brilliantly.

The game centers on an unamed protagonist who, for an unkown reason, is forced to walk through the same photorealistic apartment hallway looped over and over again.

P. T. Strips down gameplay to the bare minimum essentials, almost acting as a throwback to the oldschool, point and click, puzzle horror games of the 90s, but with a distinctly modern flare. You are able to walk and zoom your camera in on objects but that is the extent of what your character is able to do. For any other game genre, this gameplay design would severely limit the potential of the game, however, for horror games this choice is perfect. The lack of gameplay mechanics is designed to make the player feel helpless and at the mercy of whatever the game decides to throw at you. There is no way to hide or ward off the supernatural forces you will face in P. T. As such, the limited game mechanics work to help create a very intense and threatening atmosphere.

The game's mysterious nature and unpredictability is another key reason for it's immense scare factor. P. T. Is without a doubt one of the most cryptic games I have ever played. The player is dropped into the game with no knowledge of what is going on or how to progress. The game's seemingly mundane, yet everchanging setting also contributes to the it's ominous tone. The relatable hallway setting gives no hints to the player as to what to expect. The fact that the hallway (sometimes subtly and sometimes obviously) changes each time the player enters also keeps the suspense at an all time high. With each new loop through the hallway, a crippling sense of dread over takes your entire body as your imagination fearfully ponders what horrors could be waiting around the next corner. In Lamon's terms, P. T. is designed to prey on the fear of what the player doesn't see or understand, the fear of the unkown.

This fear is further hammered into the player's psyche through P. T.'s exceptionally memorable sound design. Much of the horror of P. T. is derived from it's lack of sound during most of the game. Over half of the game is completely silent, building the player's tension to near unbearable levels and ensuring they jump at every little sound. When the game isn't silent, it is assaulting the player's ears with creepy, paranoia inducing sounds. Disembodied voices, blood curdling screams, and the eerie sound of a baby crying are just some of the spine chilling noises players may hear throughout the game. There is also a radio heard throughout the game which speaks of a grisly, shocking crime involving a father and his family which, again, helps to further enhance the game's sinister atmosphere.

The imagery in the game is also downright skin crawling. The visual design of Lisa (the murderous poltergeist that shares the hallway with you) is ghoulish and frighteningly memorable. Her mangled face is sure to burn it's way into your mind long after the game ends. She is also able to project shadows of herself on the walls of the hallway (among other ghostly methods of haunting the player) further helping to increase the player's paranoia. Morover, much of the truly horrific imagery throughout the game deals with extremely taboo and disturbing subjects. These include fetuses, unwanted pregnancy, and brutal familicide.

Overall, P. T. does it's job (to scare the player) and does it well. It also presents a thoroughly cryptic and ambiguous story that is sure to keep you thinking even after you finish the game. If you are an avid horror fan and are fortunate enough to come across this game, I would highly recommend playing it, you will get the scare of your life!

An iconic landmark of psychological horror
14 March 2022
The Silence of the Lambs is without a doubt one of the most suspenseful, gripping, and complex stories ever filmed.

The acting performances of this film need no introduction. Anthony Hopkins' performance as Hannibal Lecter cannot be described as anything less than the performance of a lifetime. Hopkins' unnerving and macabre charisma, along with the film's excellent writing and cinematography, turn Lecter into a captivating, compelling, and incredibly disturbing antagonist that has more than earned his place as one of the greatest film villains of all time. Jodie Foster's performance as Clarice Starling also makes for an excellent protagonist. Foster is remarkably natural in the role, and Starling as a character, is sympathetic, bold, and easy to care about. In addition, the unique bond formed between Hannibal and Clarice is perhaps the most intricate hero-villain dynamic in film history. The two play off each other perfectly and their dialogue between each other is always brilliantly written.

The storytelling of the film is even more harrowing, surreal, complex, and terrifying than even it's reputation would suggest. The film is absolutely one of the scariest ever made. It's subject matter and set design is grotesquely detailed and brutally realistic. The film also builds tension in ways few other films can match. Some scenes in the film are positively anxiety inducing and will often scar viewers for days after watching them. The film's messages are also very relevant and intriguing. The film explores the menace that women often feel in society and explores just how vulnerable human beings truly are.

Overall, Silence of the Lambs is a timeless masterclass in suspense, dark storytelling, and mature themes. In my opinion, it might just be the greatest psychological horror film of all time.

The most emotionally powerful movie I have ever seen
11 March 2022
Before I start this review I MUST address the immense pressure put on this movie. Perhaps no other movie in the history of cinema has had as much hype and expectations surrounding it as Avengers Endgame. It was the finale to one of the longest and most successful blockbuster film franchises in history, as well as the followup to one of the best blockbuster films of the last century. The last 10 YEARS of Marvel movies ALL built to this ONE movie! If it failed, that would be ALL that people would remember. They would not remember the exceptional Captain America Civil War, or Black Panther, or The Avengers (2012), or Avengers Infinity War, or the ENTIRE rest of the Infinity Saga! They would ONLY remember that THIS MOVIE FAILED! All the time, effort, and vast amounts of money put into the last decade of Marvel Studios films would have essentially been wasted! Normally you could NEVER expect a movie with this much build up around it to live up to expectations! Hype has been ruining movies for decades and NO movie has ever had more hype around it then this! And yet, not only did Endgame live up to expectations, it SURPASSED them in the minds of millions of fans (including myself). Instead of being weighed down by the hype, the movie used it to its advantage, brilliantly subverting and satisfying expectations! Very few other films in the history of cinema have EVER succeeded in this way at THIS magnitude! The accomplishments of this film MUST be respected. However, all of this is still only a small part as to why this film is so special. Endgame is a poignant example for how to make a genuinely masterful movie in a big blockbuster setting.

The acting performances in this film are absolutely sublime! Never before have all powerful superheroes felt SO human. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet Johannson, Josh Brolin, and Karen Gillan all give some of the best performances of their entire careers in this film!

The writing of the film is brilliant, as all the characters deal with the astronomical grief of their failure in the last movie in vastly different ways. Some grow angry and resentful over it. Some attempt to forget about it and make a new life for themselves. Others become depressed, hollow shells of their former selves. And still others manage to cling to their humanity and continue helping people as best as they can. But no matter how they choose to deal with it, none of them are as they once were. They are no longer the confident, brave, and powerful warriors that they were in the previous films. Now they are lonely, jaded, and riddled with sadness. I have heard many people criticize this film for being too slow in the first too acts. What these people don't undertstand is that the movie HAS to be slow. The film must drive home just how enormous the consequences of the Avengers' failure are, and the only way for it to do that is to slow down and take it's time showing the incomprehensible amount of damage that their failure has caused.

However, the one thing about the characters that has not changed is their selflessness. This is what the film explores so well and what makes it so inspiring. Despite all that has happened and all that has gone horribly wrong, the characters all still manage to retain the one trait that makes them heroes. They all still have a desire to do the right thing and save the world. For some of the heroes this desire has been buried deep inside them by all the grief they now bear. This makes it incredibly satisfying to see the desire slowly begin to surface in them again, as the hope for victory grows.

The endings for each of the Avengers' stories are also all handled with remarkable care. The ending's for each of the Avenger's character arcs all feel like they make sense and that they are earned. This is once again a testement to the film's writing. The film recognizes what each of the characters care about, and one by one, it gives them each closure to their worries and a fitting end to their suffering that makes sense for each character. Not to spoil anything, but some of these endings are incredibly heartbreaking and will emotionally effect the audience in ways that few films could ever hope to achieve.

The action in this film is honest to god some of the best I have EVER seen. Even when the action scenes contain dozens upon dozens of characters fighting at once they are still, somehow, choreographed exceptionally well. You would be heart pressed to find ANY mistakes in the editing and choreography of ANY of Endgame's fight scenes. The action is also further enhanced to GODLY levels by the stellar visual effects and music. The visual effects team for the Avengers movies always does a phenomenal job conveying the large than life scale of the battles and this is no exception. Some of the scenes in this film look so good that they can only be described as movie magic. The musical score of this film is, in my opinion, the most breathaking soundtrack in blockbuster film history. Yes, this even includes Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and Harry Potter. The music gives a massive adrenaline boost to any scene that it is heard in and undoubtedly puts composer Alan Silvestri on par with some of the greatest film composers of all time, such as John Williams and Hans Zimmer.

The movie is also unbelievably well paced for it's length. It is a 3 hour movie that feels like two. This is due to the fact that almost every scene in the film feels like it needs to be there in order to contribute to the story. Few films that are this long are this entertaining and the ones that are, will usually be considered some of the best films of their genres, such as Saving Private Ryan and Lord Of The Rings The Return Of The King.

Overall, Avengers Endgame more than delivers on all fronts and is one of the most moving, inspirational, and powerful movies I have ever seen. The immersive storytelling, smart writing, impeccable acting, stunning action, and beautiful music make this a must see for any fan. In my opinion, Endgame will undoubtedly go down as a timeless classic of the superhero genre, and one of the greatest film franchise finales of all time.

Spielberg's breathtaking and brutally realistic war epic!
9 March 2022
Throughout the history of cinema there have been numerous all time great war films, but try as they might, there is still no war film quite like Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan.

The film treats the subject of war with the respect, dignity, and realism that it deserves while also telling a throughly riveting story. Everything that you have heard about the World War 2 battle scenes in this film is true. Each one is stunning, harrowing to behold, and remarkably well shot. The brutal realism and horror of these scenes cannot be understated. These are the kinds of battles that will chill you to the bone, leave you speechless, and make you pray that you NEVER find yourself on the battlefield. This is mainly due to the incredibly immersive sound design and cinematography of the film which always makes you feel as if you are right there with the soldiers as they are being dismembered, burned alive, and shamelessly slaughtered. The battle sequences are infamous for featuring no music, only the constant, monstrous sounds of shell explosions, machine gunfire, and blood curdling screams. Spielberg also frequently made expert use of first person shaky cam shots during the battles in order to put the audience right in the middle of the chaos and destruction.

However, despite all the brutality, it would mean nothing without an effective story and likeable characters. But, the film shines brightly in this department too. Most of the soldiers that the film focuses on are three dimensional and feel like real people. Moreover they are all given solid acting performances by their respective actors. In particular, Tom Hanks and Matt Damon's performances as Captain Miller and the titular Private Ryan are obvious standouts. Hanks is well known for delivering all time great performances in practically every film that he stars in and this film is no exception. Hanks comes across as strong willed, likeable, and experienced in the role. The young Damon also delivers a realistic and down to earth performance as Ryan. Both characters are well written and flawed, with Miller in particular experiencing substantial growth throughout the movie through a great character arc.

The film's screenplay and plot are some of the best in the history of the war film genre. The physical and moral struggles that soliders must endure during war are conveyed exceptionally well in this film. Characters often make morally ambiguous decisions that blur the lines between right and wrong. In fact, it is debatable whether the mere premise of the story is right or wrong. The film also explores the effect that war has on each individual solider, as well as whether it is acceptable to be a good sumaritan on the battlefield . These are very mature and thought provoking themes that go far deeper than most war movies (especially the ones made before this film) dare to go.

Overall, Saving Private Ryan has earned it's status as one of, if not the greatest war film of all time, and one of the very best films of Steven Spielberg's all time great filmography.

Legendary Superhero Masterpiece is Still The Best Of It's Kind
7 March 2022
The Dark Knight is Christopher Nolan's magnum opus and a gripping, unforgettable thrill ride from start to finish.

The acting performances in this film are truly as great as they come. Heath Ledgers infamous take on the Joker is undoubtedly one of the most captivating, disturbing, and iconic villain performances in film history. All of the other main players in the film (especially Batman, Harvey Dent, and Commissioner Gordon) are also acted remarkably well, due in part to the immense strength of the film's cast.

The action and stunt-work in this film are utterly spectacular. Few other films have ever managed to keep me on the edge of my seat this much during chases, and fight scenes. There are a number of reasons for this. Christopher Nolan clearly put a lot of work into the stunts in this film and it shows. Every jaw dropping explosion, or nail biting vehicle chase feels as if it is really happening and that you are experiencing it in real time with the characters.

The music is undoubtedly some of the best I have ever heard in a film. The all time great film composer Hans Zimmer once again proves to be a master of his craft here, delivering a thoroughly blood pumping and epic musical score that enhances the action ten fold.

The storytelling is some of the best in the history of comic book filmmaking. It is dark, unforgettable, and exceptionally intricate. The film tackles very mature themes that are far beyond most comic book movies, such as the contrast between order and chaos, as well as whether superheroes are truly heroes or simply vigilantes. The characters are also ALL masterfully well written. Many of the characters, such as Harvey Dent, Commissioner Gordon, and Batman, embark on some of the greatest and most thought provoking character arcs I have ever seen. The richly detailed world building surrounding Gotham city also helps to make the film feel remarkably immersive (especially for a superhero movie).

Overall the Dark Knight is without a doubt one of the greatest films of the last century and an essential film experience, even for those who are not fans of the superhero genre. It is legendary for a reason.

Attack on Titan (2013– )
10/10
Legendary dark fantasy anime is immensely thrilling, epic, and unpredictable
9 February 2022
Attack On Titan has become a world wide phenomenon for a reason. It is one of the most thoroughly gripping and satisfying stories I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

The storytelling of Attack On Titan is masterful in how it subverts viewer expectations and tells a meaningful story, while also being breathtaking to behold. The show undoubtedly has one of the most genuinely unpredictable plots in any anime. You can NEVER completely for-see what is going to happen next, and the show constantly keeps you guessing from start to finish. Many shows attempt to create this feeling of uncertainty, but few manage to actually pull it off and keep it up for their entire runtime. Attack On Titan does this in spades. Throughout the story there are many huge revelations, plot twists, challenging decisions, and unforgettable moments that will completely take your breath away!

The characters in Attack On Titan are exceptionally well written and engrossing to watch. Characters such as Erwin Smith, Eren Yaeger, Levi Ackerman, and Reiner Braun are, in my opinion, some of the most captivating characters in the history of television. Many of the characters are also deeply flawed, which helps to make them feel as human as possible

The action in Attack On Titan is entirely in a league of its own. There really is nothing else like it. The battle scenes are vibrantly animated and unbelievably fast paced to the point of being spectacular. In addition, the show has undoubtedly, the best television musical score I have ever heard! Almost every music track is unbelievably blood pumping and masterfully composed. Morover, the musical score is also incredibly diverse in its composition. Some tracks are hauntingly quiet and somber while others are bombastic and dynamic, heightening the viewer's adrenaline to insane levels. I have no doubt that some of the most emotional scenes in the show would not be nearly as effective if not for the music which speaks to how truly phenomenal the soundtrack is.

Overall, Attack On Titan is without a doubt one of the best shows of our time and will go down as a modern classic. Whether you are an anime fan or not, I would HIGHLY advise you to give this show a try. It may be one of the best decisions you ever make!

Astonishing anime masterpiece contains brilliant action, character work, and storytelling
8 February 2022
Even with the inclusion of great western series such as Breaking Bad and Game Of Thrones, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood still remains one of the greatest TV shows I have ever seen.

Much like the equally exceptional Cowboy Bebop, Brotherhood takes influence from a wide variety of genre styles, and mixes them all together brilliantly. Horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and action are all pivotal aspects of the show's storytelling.

The plot of Brotherhood is a masterclass in suspense, plot twists, gripping revelations, and conveying complex messages. It always feels unpredictable, and there are many unforgettable moments throughout the story that will make your jaw drop. The world building in the story is also some of the finest in television history (both in animation and live action). Every location in the show has it's own rich lore and history, which makes all of them feel stunningly real and intricate. The world of Brotherhood also contains a complex political and military system, that is a lot more thorough then most anime.

However, the world would be nothing without good characters to fill it and Brotherhood has them in spades. It is not an exaggeration to say that every single character in the series is interesting and easy to care about. This applies even to side characters that you only ever see once or twice. Characters such as Roy Mustang, Scar, Edward Elric, Hohenheim, and Ling Yao in particular, are some of the most stunningly well written characters you will ever see in a TV series. In addition, most of the villains (many of whom are named after the seven deadly sins) are also very compelling and memorable. Antagonists such as Wrath, Solf J. Kimblee, Father, and Envy are some of the most exceptionally sinister and captivating villains I have ever seen.

The action and animation in Brotherhood are virtually unparalleled in both anime and mainstream television. Each battle feels more vivid, exciting, and breathtaking than the last. This is due in part to the stellar soundtrack, along with the awe-inspiring and fluid animation. The soundtrack is masterfully composed, and every music track is beautiful to listen to. The animation brilliantly captures both the beauty as well as the horror of Brotherhood's world, being both gorgeous and deeply disturbing. Furthermore the show is not afraid to kill off or severely handicap major characters, which adds yet one more layer of intensity to the action.

Ontop of all of this, the show is also surprisingly humorous. Though the comedy (like a lot of anime) can feel very over the top at times, it is delivered at just the right moments during breaks in the story and action. Moreover, the comedy is a lot better than most anime and will have you laughing many times.

Overall, no matter what it is you are looking for in a TV show, whether it be a great story, complex messages, compelling characters, good comedy, or mind-blowing action, you will most certainly find it in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The show has something for everyone and has more than earned the title of being one of the greatest anime ever made. Even if you have never seen a single anime in your life, I highly recommend that you give this show a chance, you won't regret it in a hurry.

The Exorcist (1973)
10/10
Still one of the scariest films of all time
9 June 2021
The Exorcist is an errie, brutal, and terrifying horror film that might just be the scariest of it's kind. The menacing atmosphere of this film is expertly crafted, as is the pacing, and the film slowly gets more horrifying and blaspehmous as it goes on.

The story of the film is complex and riveting, pulling you into the drama the characters face while also offering up some surprisingly uplifting symbolism concerning the loss of faith and how it can be regained.

The scare sequences in this film are nightmarish and unforgettable, with the special effects still conveying monstrous shocks decades after the films release.

The sound design and visuals utterly spine chilling. Mercedes Mcambridge's menacing voice, as well as the brutal, bone chilling sound effects of Regan's body being violently mutilated, are both enough to make even the hardiest viewer's skin crawl.

The acting is also phenomenal from every character, including all of the side characters, and you truly feel for all of them as the movie's titular demon wreaks havoc upon their lives.

Overall, The Exorcist is a film every aspring horror fan must see and remains one of the most freightening stories ever filmed.
