Knives Out (2019)

Daniel Craig's phony accent was awful...
29 March 2023
I thought I would enjoy "Knives Out" with its stellar cast, but 15 minutes into the film, I started wondering, why on earth Daniel Craig was talking with the strangest phony accent I've ever heard. I made it to 35 minutes before I gave up! Being both British and American doesn't make imitating accents a sure thing. It sounded like he was aiming for a Southern drawl, but he just sounded ridiculous. He reminded me of Maureen O'Hara trying to sound Irish in "A Quiet Man". I may try to watch the rest of the movie, but dubbed in French to avoid having to listen to his poor performance. Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Colette and Christopher Plummer (all very good) should have clued him in!

Ted (2012)

Not bad as background noise when working on a machine.

I'm usually a fan of Mark Wahlberg, and his acting is up to par, but the story of his lifelong friendship with a talking teddy bear was a bit over the top. I did laugh a few times, but I'm glad the noise of my knitting machine drowned out a lot of the bad language which, by the way, wasn't really necessary to that extent. And I'm glad it didn't cost me the price of a ticket, I would have regretted my investment ! Watch it if you have Netflix but don't bother buying the DVD!

La rivale (1974)
8/10
Enjoyable, and memorable.
16 July 2019
I first saw this movie on T.V. when we subscribed to an extra channel back in the '70's so we could watch lots of films, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one to the point where I still remember it well. The story may not be completely original, but I liked the idea of the wife becoming the "friend" of the mistress. It's practically a lesson on how to deal with infidelity. I've been watching for the DVD ever since.

Kind of ridiculous, but pure fun.

I found this by chance on Netflix and watched it because of the amazing cast. I really enjoyed the way the French policeman (Dany Boon) interacted with the New York City policeman (Adam Sandler) on holiday. Being an American living in France, I can say that the cultural tidbits are actually quite accurate. All the unlikely events just add to the fun. This film deserves a good rating to say thanks for the entertaining moment it affords the viewer.

Aladdin 2 (2018)

Silly, but delightful

I had seen some very bad reviews, but I'm glad my French grand-daughters insisted on going to see this movie. We had lots of good laughs and the actors did a good job. I enjoyed the puns, and the scenes with cameos such as Gérard Depardieu as Christopher Columbus when the genie got his wires crossed. Un moment de pure détente !

Only You (1994)

Preposterous story. Disappointing film.

I came across this movie quite by chance on Netflix and decided to watch it because I like the actors who play in it, especially Joaquim De Almeida who is a prolific polyglot (I recommend "La cage dorée" which takes place in Paris and Portugal). And I have enjoyed other films by Norman Jewison such as "Moonstruck". I enjoy a good fairy tale, but I found the heroine in Only You to be more annoying than moving. At least it helped put me to sleep when I was sick in bed!

Not the best Depardieu, but watchable...
13 June 2016
I was pleased when this film became available on Netflix and then on DVD, because I am an unconditional fan of Gérard Depardieu even though he is no longer the healthy-looking star he used to be, and also because I was convinced from day one that DSK had fallen into a trap set by his political enemies. Only two people know exactly what happened that day in his hotel room, so this is indeed a fictional version, but when Depardieu's character tells his wife that he is not guilty as accused, I for one believe him. It's watchable, and almost philosophical when he talks to his very rich wife about the sharing of wealth. And if anyone is disappointed by Depardieu's performance in this movie, I recommend director Jean Becker's delightful film "La Tête en friche" (My Afternoons with Margueritte) in which Depardieu is brilliant. Jacqueline Bisset's performance here is remarkable too.
