The Burning Girls (2023)
This Isn't Good
I'd read glowing reviews about this so was disappointed when I was completely bored by the third episode. The writing isn't great, the acting is either fantastic or ropey, there's no in-between. There are too many plot threads that either go nowhere or are totally predictable. It just doesn't make sense - it's like the writers had half an Agatha Christie style plot and half a sort of supernatural one and decided to chuck them together and see what they ended up with. It definitely isn't horror- it's basically Midsomer Murders with some unscary ghost kids. Very disappointing and not worth bothering if you think you're going to be watching a supernatural horror.
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Great (Apart From McDonnell...)
An enjoyable programme with a mostly great cast. Mary McDonnell wasn't bad, she was atrociously terrible throughout. I watched actual furniture out perform her in some scenes and couldn't for the life of me work out why she was cast. Every line she has is delivered as a mumbled mess whilst she, completely expressionless despite whatever the script says, appears to be genuinely frozen to the spot. Her character is unlikeable but that is no excuse for her dreadful acting in this. She lets the entire cast down (everyone else is very good) Worth watching but prepare the subtitles for whenever Mary shuffles onto your screen.
Haunted (2018)
Series 3 = Utter Trash
!Spoliers!
Complete trash! Never before have I written a review for a series but I just couldn't stop myself. Every episode is a total reach. The stories are daft with glaringly obvious holes (in episode 1, 'deep and painful lacerations that wouldn't stop appearing, miraculously disappear in one scene because the production team messed up the editing...) None of the 'victims' thought it might be sensible to move house or dispose of the haunted object etc. Usually there's a reason given but no explanation is offered so you just presume they're all stupid. One of my favourite parts was a witch in a wall being blamed for a girl falling asleep with her hand precariously close to an operating metal bladed fan. Could it just be stupidity? Nah, voodoo is much more likely, surely! I laughed and rolled my eyes throughout. Absolute shame because previous seasons have been enjoyable. Also wondering how much they had to pay for Rachel Green's cat to star in episode 5.....
