Duncan or Devonald with Muslin Cloud (1891)
Climactic Finale
This third installment in the Duncan trilogy blows away even the original. The film brings together the plot threads running throughout the series in a sweeping conclusion that even vindicates the previous films errors. The addition of Devonald and the surprising twist ending (I won't tell you how the muslin cloud fits in) make this a soaring cinematic triumph. See this film today, it is flawless.
Duncan and Another, Blacksmith Shop (1891)
Weak sequel
This followup to 'Duncan Smoking' fails to recapture the magic of the original. While Duncan is as striking as ever in his role, combining him with a no name sidekick weakens the entire film. In addition, rehashing the motifs of heat and smoke as primal elements leaves us yawning. Check out the third in the trilogy instead.
Duncan Smoking (1891)
Amazing!
This is the kind of cinema you just don't see anymore. So honest, so compelling, that we the audience are unwilling bound to watch it right to the very end. Duncan is outstanding as the at times moody, at times energetic hero of this piece. His brilliance in the simple act of smoking enthralls with its vitality and emotional strength.
