Back to Black (2024)
Enjoy being in the company of Amy Winehouse be it with love or sadness.
I watched the new Amy Whitehouse film last night. I'm going to give a simple review. Take no notice of those who give negative criticism. Personally I was mesmerised by the whole movie experience.
Friends and fans of Amy have slammed the film, particularly focusing on Blake Fielder-Civil, ex husband of Amy. It's worth listening to Blake's passionate interview before making judgement. This can be found by searching on YouTube. Some have condemned the film as cringeworthy and suggesting it's not worth taking seriously. Though I disagree, I can somewhat sympathise with those friends as everyone wants someone close to be remembered in a good light. But life is not perfect, as the film shows.
Marisa Abela, who plays Amy, gives a phenomenal performance. Her mannerisms and voice of Amy make you think you are in the presence of the singer.
Juliet Cowan the actress who plays Amy's mum sumed it up so well, watching the film will make feel as if you have spent two hours with Amy and see how much love she had.
I agree.
Ignore the bad press and for two hours enjoy being in the company of Amy Winehouse be it with love or sadness.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Hey, what do I know.
First, let me confess, I do play D&D regularly though not as expertly as most fans.
Secondly, I love fantasy i.e. Game of Thrones (GoT), Lord of the Rings (LOTR) and many more that I could mention.
Thirdly, I'm crazy about CGI, as you can imagine from what I just previously said, it has allowed me to be part of those worlds.
Lastly, cinema stands over and above TV when it comes to watching syfy and fantasy 'films'.
Good, got that out of the way.
I don't want a perfect D&D fit for me because your average audience's wouldn't understand the interwoven plot lines and oddities of the game. But there was enough to tag it to D&D.
For example, not as a slight but an observation. Someone commontated that it makes no sense 'water in a cave'?! Yup, it does to me.
The CGI was pretty good, enough to keep me darting across the screen to gorge on the special effects.
Loved the messy plot and back stories which are essential in D&D and again, enough but not too much to create convoluted confusion for the film going public.
I actually loved the characters. Chris Pine as the hapless bard is a treat and without going through each cast, they acted out their roles as their characters convincingly enough for D&D lovers (though I may be slated, but this is my view). If you can make me laugh out lound in the cinema, for me then that's a funny film. This did.
On a last note, because of the nature of D&D and the long plots, if the quality can be transfered, I'd say it would be great as a TV series like GoT or LOTR. But hey, what do I know.
Rain Dogs (2023)
My go to binge watch
Earthy dark comedy. Wonderful character interaction with so many ups and down following people who continually struggle with day to day existence of the modern life.
Costello and Selby's relationship is caustic and beautiful in equal measures. Daisy May Cooper delivers a wonderful performance of a woman who does everything to change her and her daughters life, but like Sisyphus she is forever rolling the ball uphill.
Buckets full of pathos and humour that explores the dysfunctional and marginalised within a society who are preferred, by some, to be buried deep out of our consciousness.
My go to binge watch.
