Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Wow! You've got to be kidding!
What a shock to see all this criticism of a movie that made 200 million in just 5 days! Most of these comments are grounded in self righteous indignation and petty bias. I would only agree with one thing, the sexual references were....ridiculous. But to say there was no plot? Well, I can only surmise that the plot was way too complicated and went right over the heads of those money hating movie goers. Meagan Fox can't act? I am willing to bet that any actress who played that part would have gotten the same criticism for simply being in such a movie. And let us not forget Michael Bay, the despicable director who molded this evil movie just to suck a few bucks from millions of unsuspecting movie goers! Transformers 2 is 2 hours and 40 minutes of humor, action and incredible effects. I don't need to defend the movie, the box office is already doing it.
Godzilla (1998)
4.2?, 4.2?, 4.2?, Sheesh! Everybody's a critic!
Oh, there was so much bad acting! Based on What? All the Oscar winning performances in previous Godzilla movies. And how could they make a more realistic Godzilla?
OH, THE NERVE! No way could this Godzilla be mistaken for Bobcat Goldthwait with a cigar burning in his puppet suit
stomping on a miniaturization of Tokyo in "One Crazy Summer"! I've watched this movie a half a dozen times. It's non-stop fun!
There is nothing wrong with any of the characters accept maybe Mathew Broderick's name. "Dr. Niko Tatohippopotomas" or some such nonsense. Don't shy away from this movie based on negative comments. Turn up the surround sound and let it blast!
Head Over Heels (2001)
Okay, so it wasn't Oscar winning, so what?
Is it a good movie or isn't it? If the movie is a comedy and it makes you laugh, somebody must have done something right. The humor is raunchy, but funny. There isn't any profanity, but the sexual content makes up for that. There is something wrong when Amanda comments on the fact that she slept with someone whose name she didn't even know. It furthers her cause as a victim of bad relationships, not really funny, but intended to garner sympathy. Even in this age of promiscuity, it is hard to be sympathetic when she jumps in bed with a guy she's only met a few times. No wonder her romantic life is in tatters.
The reason I believe this movie flopped at the box office is it doesn't have a target audience. Monica Potter isn't exactly a household name, so most guys are off target. Freddie Prinze Jr. appeals mostly to young girls, who because of the strong sexual content, probably were not allowed to see the movie. Personally, I would have liked to see more action, but hey, I'm a guy. (Actually, my wife said it and I'm just agreeing with her.) This movie would have benifited with an "R" rating, and I'm not talking about language or nudity, which rarely enhances a movie box office score.
As a comedy, the movie succeeds, I laughed a lot. As a romantic comedy, well let's just say that the chemistry was lacking. Just because two people look great together, doesn't really mean a thing.
Toy Story (1995)
If ever a movie was perfect, this is it.
Never mind that it's a kiddie movie. It's a pioneer film from Walt Disney and worth seeing just on that merit alone. The whole concept of the toys lends itself perfectly to the new medium of computer animation, not to mention the incredible marketing of it's toys.
The plot and the dialogue keep producing laughter faster than Disney's releases of re-releases. The end sequence ties in perfect with the open sequence, opening presents. In fact, the whole concept was so solid, that the movie would have been just as successful if no big names had been cast. Not that I'm complaining, I'm a fan of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, too. But when you look back at all the hoopla of the film, you kind of forget them. You won't forget Buzz and Woody!
Josie and the Pussycats (2001)
I really wanted to like this movie.
You just don't always get what you want. This movie isn't worth the time I am taking to write this comment. The three Pussycats were real dogs. I felt nothing from them. The only good thing about the movie...campy! If you don't like campy, then don't bother with this film. My 12 & 14 year old daughters loved the movie. 'Nough said.

The Princess Diaries (2001)
What a fun, cute, feel good movie!
I can count on one hand the number of times the movie audience has applauded at the end of a movie that I have attended. Chalk up one more. Anne Hathaway is delightful as Mia, she carries the movie. Even though I never for a moment thought of her as a 16 year old, it just didn't matter. How nice to see such a quality "G" rated movie. If you like to laugh, don't miss it. Normally, I would not recommend seeing a movie like this at the theater, but the audience reactions make it worth the ticket price.
Lost in Space (1998)
Where's the sequel?
Where to start? Let's start with the only negative, the movie tried to please too many people. As a result, the movie suffers from an identity crisis. The adults who watched the original series are too old to relate this film, including my parents. The movie is too intense in some scenes for small children.
Young adults showed little interest in the movie, and if by chance they had seen the original series, there was even less chance of them spending money at the box office. The biggest group who watched "Lost in space" at the theater were the same group who watched the original series as small children. Too bad so many people have missed this exiting and entertaining movie. My first thought when the movie was over was "When's the sequel?" Unlikely, now.
A great cast is difficult to reassemble. There was great chemistry between any number of characters. The dialogue was fun throughout the entire movie.
The plot was okay, but it didn't matter because everything else was done right to make this movie extremely entertaining!
Waterworld (1995)
If ever a movie needed defending, this is it.
What do people have against spending money on making a movie? I obviously am not smart enough to "get it" because I'd rather see the money spent in a local economy than see the studio company make hundreds of millions of dollars on one movie. There was so much negative press on the cost of the movie, that few people could watch it with an open mind. So what if the studio and Kevin Costner lost money at the box office. Not every movie is a block buster, even if it is billed as one. Their only crime was building up expectations which they were unable to meet. It wasn't a bad movie. Simple good vs evil, and good won. If you weren't able to have fun with this movie, then you missed the boat.
The Abyss (1989)
Science fiction extraordinare!
The only thing this movie lacks is a villain that you can despise. I'm not saying this is bad, just not necessary. There is so much happening in this movie, the fore most being good science fiction. The relationship between Lindsey and Virgil runs deeper than the ocean they're trapped under. The scene where she comes up with the idea of drowning, have Virgil drag her back to the base and revive her is one of my all time favorite movie sequences. The diving sequence ain't bad either. This movie kept you guessing and hoping and on the edge of your seat. You don't have to be a sci-fi buff to love "The Abyss".
Aliens (1986)
Action and adventure galore!
If you saw "Alien", now that was horror. I can't put "Aliens" in that genre. What I saw was non-stop action and adventure, suspense and drama in a science fiction setting. The aliens were not invincible. Ten times as many aliens died as marines. Paul Reiser was wonderfully sleazy as the villain. No tears were shed for him! Sigourney Weaver (Rippley) is tough as nails in a soft-hearted way. Is that possible? The rest of the cast make for Xenofodder with the exception of Michael Beihn and the android, Bishop.
To me the defining moment was the shuttle sequence. The pilot did not scream or cry as the crew from "Alien" did. She died going for her gun. The special effects of the crash were spectacular. The aftermath of the crash devastating.
I share the same opinion as many that this sequel was the best that was ever done, and far surpasses the other three movies in this series.
Ever After (1998)
No profinty? No Nudity? No violence? No kidding!
A great adaption of the cinderella story, one of my favorites. The thing that stands out the most is the "G" rating. It is wonderful to watch a movie that is entertaining without profanity, nudity, or violence. The performances are good as is the plot. Even though eveyone knows how it will end, it just doesn't matter. A perferct movie for any family!
