Wonders of the Solar System (2010)
Life changing
This show legitimately changed my life when I first watched it. I finally understood what the point of physics lessons at school were. But more than that, it set a fire within me to learn more, not just about astronomy but about all science. I became interested in biology, history, culture, psychology all because I'd watched this series. After watching it I realised the enormous gaps in my knowledge about how the world and the universe work. Although I know I will never completely fill those gaps, trying to do so gives my life purpose and brings me no end of pleasure.
Brain Cox is a wonderful science presenter who makes it easy to grasp the basics of very complex ideas. The visuals are gorgeous and the soundtrack is a perfect match for them. I can't thank the BBC enough for creating this series.
Stowaway (2021)
Waste of a perfectly good idea
The idea being that someone stows away on a rocket bound for Mars in the very near future is interesting. Implausible, but interesting.
But having no backup system to process oxygen and CO2? Seriously? What kind of clowns built the rocket??
Then having astronauts perform an incredibly dangerous spacewalk UNTETHERED to the spacecraft??
As for not tying the oxygen canister to your space suit, apparently none of these highly qualified astronauts have an ounce of common sense or foresight.
I couldn't suspend my disbelief for long enough to enjoy this film. The Martian is a far superior take on a similar idea.
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
A beautiful natural history documentary
I'm a huge fan of natural history documentaries and watch a lot of them so I wasn't surprised when a film called My Octopus Teacher was suggested to me by Netflix.
What did surprise me was how fascinating and engaging this beautiful film was. I defy anyone not to be moved by the journey the narrator and his cephalopod companion go through.
This is a wonderful film; and I've not eaten octopus since.
Movie 43 (2013)
Dreadful
When I watched this film at the cinema the loudest reaction from the audience was a muted cough halfway through.
