The Spirit (2008)
Good Lord NO
Hey, IMDb, when are you going to let us assign zero stars to movies that do not deserve any stars at all?
If Will Eisner hadn't been dead this movie would have killed him.
Take everything that made The Spirit newspaper strip (and comic books) absolutely wonderful and completely destroy them with dreadful writing, insipid direction and nauseating cinematography. That seemed to be the mission statement and objective of this film.
Mission accomplished.
No redeeming qualities. Not worthy of even one star. Avoid at all costs ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of The Spirit.
What did Eisner do to deserve this dreck?
The Bank Shot (1974)
Lightweight fun with a good cast
"The Bank Shot" is a pleasant enough little film with a decent cast that you've seen in many other movies and television episodes. George C. Scott is a terrific actor. Three distinct movies that show his broad acting range (in my opinion) are "Anatomy Of A Murder", "Patton", and "The Bank Shot." I felt he handled the comedy in this movie very well. The novel that this was taken from (by Donald Westlake) is quite funny as are most of his books. Two other films based on Westlake's novels, "The Hot Rock" & "Cops And Robbers" were filmed in the same era and are equally funny. Joanna Cassidy was bubbly and bright and very attractive (still is, too!). Sorrell Booke was a treat and got to ham it up the most as Ballentine's "lawyer", Al G. Karp. By the way, speaking of ham, did anyone else catch that the character name Hermann X (portrayed by Frank McRae) sounds an awful lot like "ham & eggs?" Clifton James narration was quite humorous especially during the opening scenes. G. Wood was very good in M.A.S.H (and M*A*S*H--television) and plays Streiger's assistant quite ably. Overall, an innocuous flick with humor, slapstick and hardly any cursing so watch it with the family. Most enjoyable and worth viewing for all the actors you know and love.
Bachelor Party Vegas (2006)
Why can't I award less than 1 star???
The dregs. I rated this movie on the portion I watched--I turned this off before it was over. I'm scarred by the amount I watched. Stay away--this is the pits. I was passing through and caught this on Starz! and aside from paying for the monthly subscription fee for Starz!, I am certainly glad I didn't rent this or (God forbid!) pay to see this in the theater. I realize films (!) like this are made strictly for release on DVD and cater to a specific crowd, but this one was simply pathetic. I'm no high-brow--I enjoy goof-ball flicks (Dude, Where's My Car?) as much as the next person, but this just seemed lazy. I got the feeling the writers (!) pirated a do-it-yourself "teen movie" template from a website and just plugged in their own specifics. And they failed. This movie is tired and clichéd and populated with bad acting. My REAL rating is less than the 1 star I gave it...
Bewitched (2005)
Delightful!
My wife and I loved this movie! Interestingly, we read two completely opposite reviews regarding this film: The national review just destroyed it! Hated everything about it--wrote that the casting was dull, Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman had zero chemistry and that the writing was disjointed and bland.
On the other hand, our local newspaper gave it a glowing review. They refuted everything the national reviewer wrote.
Being big fans of the TV series (and fans of the stars in the movie) we decided to see it long before the Jeckyll & Hyde reviews. And like I said at the beginning--we loved it! Casting was brilliant. Nicole Kidman has never been more adorable. Will Ferrell is naturally funny. Michael Caine is a legend as is Shirley MacLaine.
Chemistry amongst all the leads was electric and seemed genuine. The movie was quite respectful and reverent of the TV series and everyone seemed to be having a good time. It was funny, smart, and sweet.
See it--repeatedly--and then buy it on DVD or VHS when available. One of the few TV series adapted to the big screen that actually works.
The All New Adventures of Laurel & Hardy in 'For Love or Mummy' (1999)
Why oh why???
This "film" is a travesty. No, wait--an abomination. NO, WAIT--this is without a doubt the absolute WORST film ever made featuring beloved characters created and established by other actors.
I thought "Inspector Clouseau" with Alan Arkin (!) instead of Peter Sellers was ludicrous and sacrilegious, but even daring to "remake" Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy is asinine and money grubbing.
Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy have been dead, respectively, since 1957 and 1965. Why anyone would even begin to imagine that suitable updates for L & H would be in the persona of Bronson Pinchot and Gailard Sartain is beyond me. I tuned in fully expecting to be horrified and embarrassed and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Everyone involved in this pathetic, moronic, disgrace should be blackballed from anything and everything associated with Hollywood and film-making. AVOID THIS MOVIE AT ALL COSTS--YOU HAVE BEEN DULY WARNED.
MASH (1970)
A rarity in Hollywood
Rather than rehash the usual comments about "anti-war" and "anti-hero" and "black comedy", I'm taking a different tack.
In my opinion, MASH (the movie) is one of the greatest, funniest, most interesting, most thought provoking movies ever made. Everything is brilliant from the writing to the directing to the cast to the scenery.
That being said, in my opinion, M*A*S*H (the TV show) is one of the greatest, funniest, most interesting, most thought provoking television shows ever made. Everything is brilliant from the writing to the directing to the cast to the scenery.
How often do you find a movie and it's small screen counterpart that are sheer genius? I'm sure others will have an opinion as to other movie to television offerings, but I believe MASH/M*A*S*H is the tops!
