I really wanted to like "Arada"...
18 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
But unfortunately, this punk rocker origin story suffers major issues. Even if you are devout follower of punk rock, I couldn't confidently recommend this film.

The film follows Ozan, a young man with dreams of escaping Istanbul and making it big with his punk rock music. His father, Atlan, once a famous singer who left his life of fame behind to tend to his children, is less accepting of Ozan's dreams. After an intense argument, Ozan finally gets a opportunity to leave Turkey behind and achieve his dreams.

Sounds interesting, right? But unfortunately, big glaring problems plague the film.

A big issue I have with this film is with our main character, Ozan. Ozan is a remarkably flat character with barely any personality whatsoever. Burak Deniz is a incredibly talented actor, and after seeing him in "Kal", I was more inclined to watch this film. Unfortunately, the script does Ozan a great disservice, as he essentially becomes a broken record, constantly repeating his distaste for Istanbul, Turkey, and his father. So much so that other characters in the film urge him to look at his situation from a different perspective, which he basically ignores. Burak Deniz does his absolute best trying to breathe life into this character, but ultimately falls flat. He has definitely matured as an actor (honestly go watch "Kal" if you want to see him in a good film), but his performance in this film left much to be desired.

Another massive problem that plagues the film is the cinematography. The cinematography really handicaps the film. If you are prone to motion sickness, do not watch this film. As soon as our main character is on the move (which is very frequent due to this film essentially being a wild goose chase), whether it be on the bus, in a taxi, or literally just walking, the camera goes absolutely ballistic. Zooming in and out ever half second, intense camera shaking, awkward camera angles are all to be expected if you chose to watch this movie. All of this makes this film very disorienting to watch.

Another reason why I didn't enjoy this film is the poor worldbuilding. This film is set during a point of unrest for Turkey, but instead of cleverly showing us this time of festering tension, it is constantly shoved down our throats through dialogue. It is so bad that the plot essentially pauses as we are forced to watch a conversation between two people discussing the differences of culture between London and Istanbul. Then, during the last 20 minutes of the film, tensions erupt at a... small courtyard with civilian militia men and the disgruntled youth of Turkey. It is such a major letdown for what is a extremely important turning point in Turkish culture and society.

Overall, despite me essentially being the target audience for this movie, it straggles its way to the end of its runtime. I cannot in good faith recommend this film.

Yellowjackets (2021– )

Ain't all what it's cut out to be
1 February 2022
I really wanted to like Yellowjackets. With an interesting concept and great actors, it definitely had a lot going for it. At the end of the day though, I believe this show was severely overhyped.

Like I said, it has an interesting concept, but the execution is just all over the place. I feel like if took 2 episodes to introduce us to the characters and show the crash, then use the rest of the episodes to weave in the modern lives of the survivors and the girls surviving the crash, I feel like it would be a lot better.

The pacing is really all over the place, and the drama isn't even there. So by the time you get to the last scene in the show, it just feels like fluff to get you invested into the second season.

The one thing I really liked though was the acting. It is really strong throughout, and everyone is casted extremely well. But, the acting over shines the writing, which is not a great thing. The acting and the writing have to be great and have to complement each other.

Overall, you just have say, is this show really worth me paying $10.99 a month? Is this show really a 9/10 on IGN? Is this show really worth 10 hours of my time? For me, it wasn't.

Red Lights (2012)

Starts of well...
1 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
And then absolutely falls apart at the end. The last 30 minutes could a bunch of nothingness. A waste a of an 1h 50m+.

Sigourney Weaver was definitely the MVP of the film, and really got me invested in the story. Even though they killed her, she was used really well in the film.

Elizabeth Olsen's character looks like she'll be a useful character in the story, but then right after Weaver's character dies, she is reduced to a side character that you completely forget by the end of the movie.

The ending was definitely the biggest let down. Our main protagonist gets powers (?) out of no where and shakes the building. After trying to prove Robert D'Niro's character a fraud for the entire movie, he just shakes a building then leaves.

My god what a disaster.

Who finds any of this watchable?
7 July 2021
You know, I thought dark comedy was supposed to be what the name intended, incredibly dark material made into some laughable joke. I myself do enjoy a bit of dark comedy, I think we all do. But this show doesn't have an ounce of this. Everything is so played up and doesn't feel grounded, it feels like a 13-year-old just getting into the internet and starts writing whatever he found funny. I didn't laugh, not once, and for a show that has comedy (dark or not) is a very bad sign.

I'd say the acting is really solid (a good and bad thing. Good being that it's watchable, bad being that really act out the outlandish writing a little too well). I came here for Sophia Di Martino and she was fairly decent. In Loki I find her bland, unimaginative and stale, but after watching this show I believe she has a chance to become a really actress (and now that she's in Loki, I'd say it's more than likely that she'll get that chance).

I stopped at the 3rd episode of the first season. I couldn't really put myself through anymore of this nonsense, and I felt really compelled to let you know, the reader, to not waste precious moments of your time. To save you the long and painstakingly process of sitting the world's most unimaginative """"humor"""", watching ridiculous writing take place, and overall the sheer boredom I felt watching this, this one is a VERY easy ***skip***.

What a load of s***!
13 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have never seen such uninspired slosh in a long time until now. Very Good Girls is a unimaginative, dull, and dumb film featuring questionable writing, horrendous acting and just down-right stupidness. If you want any clue on how bad this movie is, at the very end, our 2 main characters take of their cloths and dance in the sprinklers. Yeah. That's how bad it is.

Dakota Flanning is a big issue in this film, with the emotional range of a tree trunk and is an absolute disgrace to any and all things "acting". Our love interest, David, is played by an absolute pencil (Boyd Holbrook) who, surprise surprise, cannot act! Elizabeth Olsen turned out to be the only good thing in this film (no surprise there).

The writing is it's own kind of awfulness. The basic gist of the movie is that 2 best friends fall for the same guy, a struggling artist. What the plot summary doesn't tell you is that Gerri's (Elizabeth Olsen) father dies, so what does our amazing Lilly (Dakota Flanning) do to help out her friend during this difficult time? Well she throws David at her make her feel better. What? Instead of putting the time it actually be with your friend and comfort her, you throw your boy toy at her. Okay! David climbs up Lilly's house into the BATHROOM while she is SHOWERING and nobody throws a fit? Are they just that """in love"""? Nobody saw him climbing up the house and think to call the police? Why is there a window in the bathroom anyway? Whoever wrote this screenplay should never work in Hollywood.

This film also does a lot of meandering, which absolutely kills the pacing and makes this film feel bloated and a chore to get through. The characters are obnoxious and annoying to watch. I literally got a headache watching this film, and as soon those credits rolled, the headache disappeared!

Whoever said this film is """"""realistic"""""" seriously needs to watch this movie again. What sane parent is letting their 7-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER out into the streets of New York City without telling anyone (yes, that actually happened in the film)?

If you value your mental sanity, water you plants, take your partner out to dinner, walk your dog. Do ANYTHING else with your free time. Don't waste your time with this "film".
