Piku (2015)
Haven't seen a better film any time recently!
Where to start?! Piku is the best heroine I've ever laid my eyes on, from Indian movies. A surprise from bollywood, of course. Shoojit Sarcar and Juhi Chaturvedi manages to make this film sweet and simple, and the same time deep and touching about relationship between people, without any labels.
The people in the world of Piku are sensible yet nonsensical at times, smart yet idiots, educated and bold but weary from the life. How much empathetic can a film be!
Kudos to Chaturvedi for creating this. Can't recommend enough.
Across the Ocean (2019)
Feel-good inspirational indie
Nothing deep, serious, heart-wrenching, mind-shattering in here. But a pleasant afternoon watch, with a cup of whatever you like, in a lounge chair on a weekend or holiday. The movie manages to make one smile as it progresses with the lives of the two girls trying hard to get what they want. Some instances are extremely relatable, like parents' reaction etc. Especially for an Indian household. And does make one think about what our childhood dreams were actually, when the movie is over.
And an extra star for making the heroines real, and not any innocent and doe-eyed, damsel-in-distress, suffering, manic-pixie-dream-girl, or whatever the trope that is usually seen these days in chick-flicks.
Very pleasant watch, extremely mood uplifting. Recommended- especially for young ladies.
DOA: Dead or Alive (2006)
Mindless but excellent for the action
Absolutely no deep story or interesting stuff in that department. The old cliche stuff of evil villain and the heroes against him. But in this case, heroines. Which alone makes me give 2 stars extra. But the male-gaze is absolutely gross. So minus 3 stars for that. But the action is wowses! So 2 stars for that.
All in all, excellent girls-night watch.
Kona fer í stríð (2018)
Mindblown!
Caught this gem of a movie at a film festival, and mind literally blown. It is humorous, it's political, it's feminist, and it is humane. It talks about a woman's solo battle against the corporations, and it's just great. Must watch.
