The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964)
The united network, you know the rest!
Watching a "Christmas Carol" and seeing Leo G. Carroll, more or less made me remember the "Man from U.N.C.L.E.". Napoleon Solo, in my humble opinion, was the only other spy who could seriously rival Sean Connery. Vaugn was not only kool and suave, but handsome and cunning, much like James Bond except that Napoleon Solo had a quite different style. Illya Kuryakin, aka David Mcallum, was excellent as the right hand man for solo and was the first time I had seen an intelligent Russian portrayed on the screen. Although I had previously seen Mcallum in "The Great Escape". Finally, Leo G. Carroll gave a commanding performance as Mr. Waverly, a man who had complete control over his agents yet had a fatherly kind of feel. But, hey, you all know this and now back to the movies!
Van Helsing (2004)
howdy Dracula, meet van helsing
it is very cold outside and there is a Wanning Gibbous moon in the sky. The moon started low and now van helsing has come on out of nowhere. So I have grabbed my emergency box of candy coated raisins, made some popcorn and hot chocolate, and opened a pack of oreos. The time is at hands, heated blanket on, lights out, camera, action, oh my! I find this movie to be excellent mainly because my expectations were so low in the first place. So, it has transcended into a pleasant surprise! Kate Beckinsale has captured my heart once and for all with her seductive independence and quite capable acting talents. Kate is not at all overshadowed by the great Van Helsing, AKA Hugh Jackman, who I thought did a pretty good wolverine in X-Men. Shuler Hensley played a quite remarkable Frankenstein's monster, slow primitive but with a college education, Boris Karloff would be impressed. Yep, that Stephen Sommers is something else besides a talented, perhaps genius? I like the concept of sheriff of vatican city. like Robin hood but this of course is obvious. The reference scene to 007 and Q was a nice surprise and kinda cute as well as entertaining and funny. The Dr. jekyll and Mr Hyde fight sequence was seat riveting, dynamic, most impressive and well done. Only Spencer Tracy was better. I reckon I oughta mention Dracula, Richard Roxburgh. I thought he was a better Dracula than either Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, because he stuck to the Bela Legosi format. The only difference between Roxburgh and Legosi is class. I liked the classy Dracula but am a devoted fan of Legosi. Thats just the way it is I guess. Like Neecie from housekeeping would say, "Lots a carryin on in this movie"! Well gotta watch it again, so long!
Click (2006)
click the remote movie
I liked this movie. Adam Sandler was cast differently here. I enjoyed the mellow humor and the family scenes. Kate Beckinsale I have never seen before but I liked her style in the movie. I was also glad to see Christopher Walken and Henry Winkler rounding of the edges with simple but entertaining comedy. David Hasselhoff, who I have only seen on baywatch twice, was splendid as Sandlers boss. Pretty much excellent casting throughout this movie. Besides, its pretty clever that the writers made a good movie about a remote control. Hats off to Adam Sandler and its good to see a movie can still bring tears to my eyes. I am now going to refocus on considering the positive things in life and avoiding the bad.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
The da vinci code
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZuh oh yea, to me the da vinci code was boring, poorly filmed (to much darkness), and was a mixture of to much underacting and overacting. The action sequences were predictable. Tom Hanks seems hungover most of the time, Audrey tautou is not getting an academy award for this movie and yall need to tell her that, I cant understand anything Jean Reno is talking about, Paul Bettany is grossing me out, Jurgen Prochnow has me reminiscing for "Das Boot". I admire Ron Howard for trying to venture into foreign films thingy, but I hope he gets something better than this. I think Ill pass on the book. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz enjoy the movie and good nite all!

How the West Was Won (1962)
How the West won me over!
Well, I just finished watching the documentary on the great director, John Ford, which in turn was directed by Peter Bagdonovich and narrated by the fabulous Orson Wells. So I will add my 2 cents as the John Ford movie that most impressed me, "How the West Was Won!", which is not necessarily my favorite. That honor goes to "Young Mr. Lincoln" or maybe "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" or "Fort Apache".
Now in my neighborhood there were three movie theaters and they were very nice; the first had a small screen, second a bigger screen, and the third a largest screen. Now the small screen might show Walt Disney, the middle "The Longest Day", and the largest, say, "James Bond" with Sean Connery, of course! One day my 4th grade teacher, Mr. Grizzly, yep before Grizzly Adams, planned a field trip uptown to see a western, "How the West Was Won"!.. The theater blew my mind, there were lights everywhere, there was carpet outside and huge chandeliers inside, everything was lined in gold, silver, red, and mahogany. We sat in the balcony and it seemed as though we were in the middle of the screen. Then the sound came on, I could hear voices coming from every direction. The screen was so huge, I could look at three different sections with nothing but movie in my peripheral vision. Oh what wrath has Mr. Grizzly brought upon us poor children, then it happened! Every single actor I loved kept appearing on the screen, one after the other. Then the finale, they sang "Green Sleeves" at the end and I had to hide my tears. Those were the good ole days, and the trip only cost me three bucks. Thanks Mr. Grizzly!
The Tall Target (1951)
the tall target - late night unable to sleep and this movie comes on, kool!
The Tall Target starring Dick Powell, Ruby Dee, Will Geer, Adolphe Menjou and directed by Anthony Mann was a surprisingly interesting, well directed, suspenseful movie that I just got lucky to see. I thought the black and white film format was very good and pleasing to the eye except in some instances. The fight scenes though staged and weak were intriguing such as the fight scene under the train. It was funny that Menjou claimed he shunned firearms because they hurt people, but shot lief Erickson in the dark through the smoke and killed him. i was especially pleased with the acting of Ruby Dee who added a wonderfully well done dignity to the maid slave role, a quiet rebelliousness that I found infatuating. Also Ruby was quite a looker and I see why Ossie Davis fell in love with her. Two fantastic talents. Anyway, The fact that the Powell character was named John Kennedy just puzzled me to no end. Also I missed the last line in the movie which really agonizes me. To Mr. Furlong, you missed the part where Powell tells Menjou that he took the bullet out of the gun earlier. I hope this is not considered a spoiler. Well thats that. Back to sleep now.
Do the Right Thing (1989)
do something
Well, this was spikes move to the big time. And he did it well. Launching careers of little known black actors and elevating careers of established white actors. Well lets delve into racial movies producing. Danny Aiello and turturro stole this movie right under spikes nose. They slapped a pizza on Spike and spike made em act like crazy. Ossie gave a commanding performance, this is the last time i ll see my grandfather. In all its glory it meant everything to me. Well OK. Moving on, spike brought in Rosie, the one who brought us Hispanic culture. For real. Now you know you black like the rest of us. but most importantly, only mama makes the best pizza!
