Shook (2019)
The best show in creation
Just the fire that is in Mia's eyes when she dances with so much passion just amazing. This show is amazing. Everything is just so fun and so many amazing songs. Mia and Ritz are so, so close without being in a relationship, and Fredgy is an awesome friend. Sandra is a hard-working mom, and that's perfect on its own.
Did I mention how out of this world the songs are? I really wish they'd be embraced more amongst Disney Channel fans, as for the show itself. The directing sets the tone for the series, and the development in the series is unreal.
I haven't been watching the Disney Channel for so long, but this attracted me, and, skipping the High School Musical plot, takes us over to a lovable and relatable female main character. I just can't wait for season 2 (I just really hope Disney creates one!)
It's so exciting, and the show is perfect.
Upside-Down Magic (2020)
This movie is a masterpiece
I'm sure everyone has their own childhood memories of reading the Upside-Down Magic books that they'll tell their grandkids about, but I'll never forget going to see the first movie. My parents flicked off the lights, Tom Howe's perfect theme played its first notes as Nory told her amazing story, and everyone in the theater was transported to another world. Tom Howe's numerous themes, all wonderful and a personification of the UDM world took the early movies to another level.
Welcome to the world of Upside-Down Magic, where if you're a thirteen-year-old teen who doesn't fit in, you might get told you have magical powers and should go to a special school to hone them. Believe it or not, there are people who watch this movie without reading the books, so a bit of description is necessary. Obviously, the stars of the show are the children, who were selected out of millions of other kids to be able to memorize lines, not look in the camera, endear themselves to worldwide audiences, and hopefully act. Izabela Rose, Siena Adudong, Allison Fernandez, Elie Samouhi, and Max Torina are so cute and tiny in this first movie, you'll undoubtedly find yourself re-watching it as the years pass just to see them as kids again. I always marvel that child actors train themselves not to look in the camera, so even if their performances aren't perfect, I cut them slack, knowing firsthand how hard it is. And these kids had to dress in funny costumes, perform odd "magic" without laughing, and pretend they're looking at things that were added in post-production!
Usually, in kids' movies, there's a grown-up or two who add to the cast and make the adult audience members feel less silly that they're watching it. In the Upside-Down Magic movie, everyone wanted to be in it! Throughout the series you'll see a host of familiar faces as "guest stars" but the regulars will make special places in your heart.
First movies are so special since they introduce audiences to a world that will hopefully capture their attention for however many more movies will be made.
In the Three Authors' fantasy world, there's so much to fall in love with; and in the film adaptation, you can really believe it exists. Seeing the Sage Academy structure for the first time creates a special feeling in your heart that can only be recaptured by watching the movie again or going to see the next in the series. The Dining Hall, Sage Match, Founders' Day parade, flying lessons, The Placement Test- all these Upside-Down Magic moments are perfectly recreated in the first of a series that saw an entire generation grow up buying toy Dragon wings, lots of movie posters, and the DVD of this film.
It may not be like the book series in any way, but it is a sure-fire delight, and we all know what a franchise it will branch-out into, beyond Harry Potter and this world.
