Falling for Christmas (2022)
Would've given this 10 stars if it wasn't for the...
This movie is heartwarming and filmed in beautiful locations and with beautiful Christmas scenery (and just one or two obvious, but still lovely CGI locations!). The story should be left alone to be wholesome, sweet and perfect for Christmas and families, but instead, it is sadly let down with a peppering of random and out-of-place bi-sexual innuendos: one in the middle of the movie, where raised eyebrows and a murmur of approval is heard by a main male lead regarding the size of the feet of a kind older gentleman and another two or three quick scenes nearer to the end of the movie, when one of the main male characters is no longer in a relationship, so suddenly starts to solicit and request the company of a male staff member to accompany him. We see them later in a private limousine ride with one of the main male characters explaining they're going on a private holiday together, with the use of facial expressions along the lines of winks and suggestive smiles etc. It is disappointing that a movie, clearly aimed and children and family viewing, would have bisexual innuendo included and furthermore in a clunky 'stuck-in-at-the-end-of-production-to-fulfill-a-memo-demand-for-'diversity'-by-the-studio' awkward feel to it.
The Noel Diary (2022)
Disappointing & contrary main character change halfway through
One of the main characters is engaged and we learn that the only thing wrong with the fiance is that they are highly organised, but the main character is just unsure whether they are marrying for security or love. We meet the fiance via a video call and they are caring, considerate, patient and understanding, so when nearer to the end of the movie, this engaged main character initiates romance with the other main character, firstly by slow dancing then by undressing themselves without any hesitation, it is a sharply disappointing contrast to the caring and considerate personality we have connected with and the sweet, heartwarming wholesome Christmas movie theme we having been enjoying hitherto.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Tired 'all men are evil' and angry feminist tone throughout
Not only is this yet another film peddling the tired feminist rhetoric: 'All men are evil' and 'all women were abused and depressed with their lives prior to the 'feminist revolution' of the 1970s', and that only in modern day western times are women truly happy with their lives; the concept of the kidnapping and brainwashing of many people, using complex electrical/medical systems, kept hidden by their kidnappers, in locked homes around north America, not discovered by their families or Police, is highly unbelievable. So is the fact that an apparent sad-sack, unemployed and broke man (the male lead) is able to afford such an elaborate system. The female lead catches her husband's boss watching them in sexual activity and although visibly distressed by this, inexplicably does not stop her husband, nor mentions it to him later. This movie contains gratuitous and protracted sex scenes, ironically, exploiting the female actress in this movie, which attempts to portray that it is a movie against the exploitation and abuse of women? Thumbs down from me.
The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)
Refreshingly different!
I have noticed a disturbing and frequent pattern in movies whereby it is depicted as normal for an old man (usually unattractive and overweight) to be in a romantic relationship with a much younger (always attractive and slim) girl. But it's extremely rare to see this in the reverse and when you do see it, it is never a 'normal' relationship, but always something purely sexual, unhealthy and fleeting. I'm assuming that is because it is not of interest nor does it fulfil the fantasies/daydreams of the typical older, overweight and un-attractive men who run the Hollywood film industry.
So, it was such a lovely breath of fresh air to finally have a script where two main characters, an older woman with a younger man, have a healthy, sweet and normal romantic relationship, that is depicted to last. This is far more common and 'normal' in modern real life than depicted in Hollywood movies, not to mention much more interesting to the large female audience.
Emily Blunt's acting is fantastic.
The Hollars (2016)
One of the best movies I've seen in a very long time
Let's be honest, most movies coming out of Hollywood now days are superficial, banal and poorly written. Not this gem. The Hollars made me laugh more than I have in a long time and bawl my eyes out more than I have in a long time and not infrequently, at the same time. Poignant and superbly written. A beautiful movie about family and what's important in life. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 out of 10 is due to the blaspheming.
