The Mummy (1999)
If you love Ancient Egypt history
If you love Ancient Egypt this movie should be on the top of your list.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are both amazing, beautiful and have great chemistry.
I want particularly mention Arnold Wosloo and Patricia Velásquez as doomed lovers Imhotep and Anck-su-namun. They are a both fantastic. So good their in their roles that sometimes I wanted the mummy to win this battle so I could see those two reunite once again against all odds.
The costumes, spoken ancient Egyptian language, the location all set my imagination wild.
I was trying to find a similar film to watch after but the only film is similar is Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Arc. I wish there was more like this.
65 (2023)
Classic Sci Fi movie
I really enjoyed this movie. It's solid classic sci fi film. It brings to mind Pitch Black, Predator and of course Jurrasic Park and in a good way because those are my favourite classic films.
Adam and Ariana are both believable in their roles and very good actors. I only wish the filmmakers would hint more at the fact that despite looking like humans from Earth they actually are not. Maybe they could have added some subtle details.
Cretaceous inhospitable Earth is very well realised (in my opinion) and all the animals look very much real. I loved the bits about giant insects, made my skin crawl...
Overall made me think how short our human lives are compared to that of lifespans of planets and stars.
For all the sci fi fans I recommend watching this film.
Swan Song (2021)
Too much melodrama
I normally love this kid of sci fi movies but I found the plot of this movie pointless.
I didn't understand the need to clone a dying person just to impersonate them to continue to fool others. It was clearly heartbreaking for the dying individuals to dye alone with their families unaware of the demise. Also i felt that i would want to know if my loved one has passed away and i was given an imposter.
Clearly the ethics are all wrong but that the filmmakers probably trying raise a moral dilemma for the viewers..
But also question plausibility of the fact that protagonist has not mention to his wife that he had problems with his health and eventually got terminal diagnosis. The explanation that she had mental health problems following her brothers death doesn't stand as they were talking enough to conceive their second child etc
I feel the whole plot is contrived and there is no way on earth anybody would choose to undergo cloning under such contract conditions.
Also there is way too much melodrama. The protagonist doesn't have any defining qualities apart that he has wife and son to care fore.
Risen (2016)
Should be a higher rating...
I had a goose bumps when I saw Yeshua first on the screen. I think the film makers managed to capture his extraordinary presence very well . He was as mysterious and unattainable for his contemporaries as for us today. Cliff Curtis is excellent as Jesus/Yeshua.
Overall film is haunting and beautiful. Just the way the film about God who once lived upon this Earth should be.
Enola Holmes (2020)
This film is for younger audiences
I think only younger folks will tolerate so much preaching about how to be 'a strong' female blah blah blah. As I am already a strong grown up female I find this film boring. This film is very moralistic. The male characters are like cartoons and I am bored of seeing Helena Bonham Carter in yet another corseted dress...I find nothing refreshing about this movie, just pushing feminism agenda, no real story to tell.
Das Jesus Video (2002)
Not bad for TV film
This film reminded me The Raiders of the Lost Ark a lot. I really liked the actor who played the main character Steffen.
What I disliked that the title was changed from the original 'Das Jesus Video'. I think the original title is the most powerful. Also why did they not follow the book. I am sorry to say I did not care about their love and their future together, all I wanted Steffen to finish watching Jesus video. After all what Steffen has been through he did care to watch the video properly. Not realistic Also I don't believe he was an atheist. One needs to be fascinated with Jesus to go through what he went through to find that video.
Contagion (2011)
I just received positive Covid-19 test result. I live in London.
Should not really watch this movie again but my mind keeps coming back to it. The film makers did amazing job portraying pandemic situation. The only thing they missed that it will last 1 year or more. I was ok during 2020 but I overcame with new more contagious type Covid this winter 2021.
Brings tears to my eyes, especially performance of Kate Winslet. For all the medical workers who gave their lives, selflessly looking after patients.
I had received a visit from our NHS paramedics and you know what, knowing that they care and they came that means so much to me. When they don't have enough people they came even if I am contagious now. I am thankful for all the medical stuff who puts their lives at risk
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Meh
Falling from the plane from big height, loosing consciousness and still surviving...
Ideology: it's the 'right thing' to do to kill a person with wrong ideology, even though killing him /her will kill all their innocent children and grandchildren in the future. The butterfly effect of this is never explored in the movie.
The main lady is the terrorist with a twisted logic..
The rest of the movie is a bit boring and predictable. 12 Monkeys, Terminator, Time Traveller's Wife.
Cloverfield (2008)
Rewatching it during lockdown.
I'm not sure why so many bad reviews. I saw this film back in 2008 and rewatched it several times after that. I still find this movie very effective, I think it aged well.
People complain about the shaky camera work. For me it's adds to the sheer horror of panic that characters experienced. It looks very real something I would film given the situation. I can totally suspend the disbelief.
As to the ending I love it like this. No explanation given and very bleak. I don't want to watch any sequels as I don't think they can improve on the story. It's always more scary when we don't know what we are actually dealing with.
I found that I sympathise with the characters even more at the moment during the lockdown.
I took only point down because of its references to Godzilla. I know it's the actual inspiration but yeah I would prefer it to have separate story to be more mysterious.
