Resurrection (2022)
Gives Rebecca Hall all the awards
This movie was my favorite of the Sundance lineup. I know it won't be for everyone, but I loved every minute of it. Rebecca Hall is so good here! Particularly in a monologue that goes on for so long, it had me glued to the screen.
I really hope this gets picked up soon, I most definitely have to watch this one again. It's a movie best experienced not knowing anything.
Watcher (2022)
A tense, slow burn
I found this thriller pretty enjoyable. The acting was phenomenal, particulacy from Maika, our lead. Some of these sequences were so anxiety-inducing, even when our lead is just walking down the street I couldn't help but tense up.
My only main disappointment was the ending. While it was building towards a satisfying conclusion, it just ends abruptly. I wanted more from it. But maybe that just shows how well everything was before hand. Also some awkward dialogue but that's just me nitpicking, it's not that big of a deal.
Overall, while I don't think I'll just check this one out again, I had a good time with it and I'm excited to see what else the director while be making next!
Brand New Cherry Flavor: Bodies (2021)
Enjoyable series overall. But doesn't feel like a series finale.
This mini series is a fun binge with some absolutely insane scenes and interesting characters. But it didn't feel like a series finale. It honestly felt like they were setting up for a lot more. But knowing there's no more coming makes it feel incomplete.
Dexter: New Blood: Too Many Tuna Sandwiches (2021)
THIS is Dexter!
Loved this episode. The way it built tension brought me back to the vibes of the original series, mixed in with that New Blood flavor with some of the best writing this. Season has brought us.
It's going to be sad when this series ends!
Black Friday (2021)
Enjoyable camp
Not the best horror comedy I've seen, but still pretty fun. I got exactly what I was expecting. It does slow down at times as I found myself zoning out a lot in the middle portion, but the cast held it together as much as they could. The VFX is pretty awesome! Robert Kurtzman never disappoints, so if you're a special make up effects junkie you'll have a blast with this one. I don't if I'd watch a sequel as I'm not sure what they'd even do with another one.
But this is definitely one to sit and watch with your friends around the holidays if you're bored and trying to find something different and fun.
Cowboy Bebop: Supernova Symphony (2021)
It's fine.
It's just fine.
Honestly when the show was doing it's own thing, I was way more interested. The ending to this one was fine, just extremely rushed. There's some decision making that needed way more context then what we got.
The season wasn't that great but not the worse thing out there. I'm honestly shocked when people say it's worse than DragonBall Evolution. The series has potential to be better if it just does more of its own thing rather than straight up adapting the original story.
They need to fix Vicious if they continue because his character was terribly written. I'm all about giving him more screen time but at least write something that doesn't make him a cartoon.
Same goes for Radical Ed. Please tone her down. She's going to get annoying real quick.
Overall, I probably wouldn't rewatch this season, yet I'd check out a season two if they move forward in hopes that they find their footing cause this really can be a fun series. They should focus on more of the fun bounty's next time.
American Horror Stories: Drive In (2021)
This should've been the premiere episode!
This one was a lot of fun! Had a blast watching this with some friends. The tension built up in the drive-in scene was some of the best I've seen in the entire franchise! I really don't understand how this wasn't the first episode they aired, it's plenty stronger than the first two episodes. Looking forward to more of these original stories.
Cherry (2021)
Destined for cult status
Like most divisive films, this one will most likely gain a cult following. Scrolling through the reviews it's pretty clear it's not for everyone. It's such a weird, dark, and emotional film with fantastic performances and experimental storytelling. For the most part, it's faithful to the novel and even fixes some issues I personally had with it, while also adding minor issues that didn't work for me, particularly with pacing. You also don't stick with the characters long enough to really learn about them, except for Cherry, and some moments with him even seemed rushed. But there's so much I liked about the film that all of that didn't matter much to me.
Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo knock it out the park! The Russos did a great job and its honestly great to see the types of stories they're interested in telling outside of the Superhero genre. I'm excited to see their next project.
Overall, ignore critics. See it for yourself and be the judge. It all depends on the type of movies you like. It's a film that's so different compared to most that have been coming out during these times and while very heavy throughout, there's still a lot of fun to have, with a bit to learn about PTSD and how dangerous addiction can be.
