Why does this exist?
1 May 2021
In the 2010's, there was a trend of LEGO direct-to-DVD movies being churned out. While there's not as many as there was being pumped out at the same time, there are still these kinds of movies out there. And one of these movies is "LEGO Friends: Girlz 4 Life". And yes, it's intentionally spelt like that. My first major complaint is the animation. It looks fine, but there's barely any LEGO in this movie, in a movie based on the toys. Even the 2012-2015 TV series had LEGO in it. Then there's the soundtrack, which is fine, but my complaint here is that the movies headlining song "Girlz" is played, what, like, 5 times in the movie? Now, the plot of this movie is that the girls recorded the "Girlz" song, and then Olivia gives the agent of Livi, a pop star, a flash drive with the song on it, leaving Livi to call it her own song. Then the girls devise a plan to get the drive, and tell her "Hey, this is our song!". In terms of the character portrayal, Andrea, at the start of the movie, feels like a selfish little twerp who only cares about fame. Though, thankfully, she redeems herself towards the end. And the voice acting is pretty bad. Because the song "Girlz" was recorded by L2M, a band made up of kids (why?), they didn't bother to rerecord the song for the adult actors. Also, the credits is a literal music video, showing the deities who made this movie. So, all in all, this is not a great movie for kids.

It's actually.... average.

We first had Ryan's Mystery Playdate, and that was an awful show, then we had HobbyKids Adventures, and that was also an awful show. So, with waning ratings, Nickelodeon greenlit a Baby Shark show. Originally, I wrote this review with early impressions in mind, and I gave it a 3 out of 10. But honestly, my opinion on the show has changed a little, and you know what? It's alright. The music's fine, the animation is OK, the voice acting is good, heck, I even laughed at some of the jokes. Of course, there are some cons, the humor is (sometimes at least, like I said, I laughed at some jokes) not always great, and there was one really stupid thing in the first episode. Baby and a fish named William try to get a tooth out, but they keep struggling. So they, get this, tie an anchor to Baby Shark's tooth, and throw it in a water warp. That's such a dumb idea, and guess what? It worked. What did I expect from a show directed by the masterminds who created Breadwinners? But anyways, the show is passable, and should always be remembered as "The show everybody but me hated on because it was based on an annoying song".

Ryan's Mystery Playdate (2019–2023)

If you're a parent, please skip this show.

Ryan's World. A very famous/infamous YouTuber who unboxes toys and gets millions of views from them. Now, he's taking over Nickelodeon, and boy, how the mighty have fallen. The theme song is a joke, I know it's trying to be "wacky" and "silly", but when you know the theme song remix on the Nick Jr. Website is somewhat better than the original, you're in for a bad time. One major flaw this show has is that it teaches kids, pretty much, nothing. Aside from problem solving and working as a team, that's it. So how do we teach kids nothing? By dragging out the episode with repetitive challenges and painfully unfunny jokes. The line delivery is appalling, now yes, PocketWatch, the company behind this show, stated that "the show is mostly unscripted", but there's tons of bad jokes, like "That's sauceome!" It tries way too hard to be "hip" and "cool", by having Ryan dab. In the year 2019. I mean, it's based off a YouTuber, what were you expecting? Combo & Gus do absolutely nothing, bar making some bad jokes. Also, the animation for them is appalling. However, there are some pros, the whole "mystery box" segment is the only enjoyable part of the show for me, and they added new secondary characters and the animation improves by season 3, but it doesn't fully fix the show for me. If Ryan wasn't the overmilked child he is, we wouldn't have got this show. But alas, it exists.

Nickelodeon's Unfiltered (2020–2021)

Awful. Just awful.

This show was made to give Nickelodeon something new to show in 2020, but oh boy, is this horrible. It's The Masked Singer, but with selfie filters. The rapid fire round is pointless, and shouldn't have a timer, further backed by the deception of it being 60 seconds, when in reality, it ends after 30 seconds. The skits are awful, and after that, they rinse and repeat, until Jay makes some "random noise". The editing is awful, and looks like something straight out of a YouTube Poop. And some of these filters (like the cappuccino) are downright creepy. And they try way too hard to appeal to kids. There are references to dated internet memes, TV shows, movies, and other things kids 10 years from now wont get. And don't get me started on the voice changer. It's awful. Everything is a miss.

A chore to sit through.

This episode is abysmal. Ryan and his family do the same boring task in both episodes. Combo Panda and Gus's animation is some of the worst I've seen. Watching Ryan and Loann make peanut butter jelly sandwiches, all for a hint, drags on for a good 2 minutes. Even though the show is "unscripted", the dialogue is appalling. After the first challenge, Ryan says "It's a green one on a blue one!" in reference to the colour of the Mystery Splasher. Don't you mean teal? Another bad line comes from Combo and Gus. "Spatu-later, alligator", they state, as they gawk over a spatula. It all feels fake and forced. Then they play a game of the floor is lava, another lousy attempt to be hip with kids, but Ryan is in a dinosaur costume. He constantly gets his inflatable dino-tail stuck in the lava, showing the director and editors didn't give two cahoots about the challenge. Then, in some of the worst editing I've seen for a TV show, some fish taco lands in Shion's hands, and they find a hint, being a painting. Then, some box lights up and they go and investigate, formulaic nonsense ensues, and they solve the mystery of the boombox. They then get their golden token, and the guest is a pancake artist, and they do, what do you know, pancake art. Not only is this another lousy attempt to be hip, but this drags on for the rest of the episode. Then, it ends, a commercial break happens, and we are thrown in to "Stamped Playdate". We do the whole formulaic opening spiel, and our first mission is to go onto a swing, and throw water balloons in Shion's hands. In other words, if they miss, the dad has to suffer. Ryan got mail, and we gawk at it. Apparently, the dad has a toothache, so Ryan's task is to get thrown in, and clean his teeth. And we get the brilliant joke, of Ryan saying "When's the last time you flossed?", and then he does, oh you know, the floss dance. Behold, the most pandering, hip and cringeworthy aspect of the episode. Bad jokes in this part include, "A buck tooth!", as Ryan finds a dollar bill in the dad's teeth. Then, he finds the hint, being a stamp, and we stare at it, and the box calls their name, they find a car, open it, and get a stamp. The guest is a mailman. And then they decide to use fans to carry balloons, to get in a mailbox, and that's it, roll credits. Overall, this was a bore of a episode, with the awful humour, boring challenges and being formulaic, it gets a C-from me.

Peppa Pig: Mister Skinnylegs (2004)
Season 1, Episode 47

Awful.

The episode states that "Spiders can't hurt you", which is false in some countries, like Australia. Yes, this show is British in origin, but it's broadcast all over the world. The only other review gave this a 10/10. Why? Because it teaches kids bad morals?

Much better than anything else on Nick nowadays.

After watching the train wreck known as Nickelodeon's Unfiltered, my bar was extremely low. A F- would have been a passing grade. But this was surprisingly good! The shows animated host, Nicky, is alright, the kid contestants are likeable and it's fun to play along. Unlike Unfiltered, its not annoying and dated, and at one point, there was a question that asked, "How many anchovies are in this scene from SpongeBob?", and that is much cooler than any pop culture references on Unfiltered. My only major complaint though, is that $1,000, the shows "grand prize", while good for a kids show, is lower than most other game shows. Overall, a solid quiz for Nicktoons fans, and gets a B- from me.
