What mental imprisonment can do to your mind
12 August 2006
This is the best movie I've seen this year. Maybe because I was in a good mood, but I kept thinking about this movie hours after I got out of the cinema. I am not a native English speaker, please excuse my bad English.

There are many parts I love about "La Amore di Màrja". Image, music, atmosphere, joy, despair, selfishness, giving, taking, needing, dreaming, surrealism, realism, etc. Every little bit of this movie is very thought through. The movie is something of an instruction book on how to break down a person and do it through the children, they are the battering ram the husband can use to keep Marja in the home and if she leaves she will have to leave her children. She becomes a prisoner in her own home, and this affects her and their children deeply.

Now there is a challenge for you as a viewer. Even though most of the Sicilians in this movie are somewhat evil, you have to realize that this movie, even though it takes place in Sicily it is not about Sicily. This behavior could take place anywhere. The message is not "this is how evil Sicilians can be" rather "this is how evil people can be, so stop it if you can".

A well made film
10 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is interesting to watch. I haven't seen an Estonian movie before and i was impressed with the people, surroundings, history and language(I haven't heard Estonian before, but it sounds almost like Finnish to me).

The environments are astounding, and the actors are OK, the movie really tries to give a picture in which neither the Soviets nor the Germans should continue to dominate Estonia. Thats why the main actors fight against the Soviet invasion.

Since we get to follow some students and a landowner, we are a little limited to only a few peoples view of the Soviet/independence dilemma, which is understandable, however, it would have been interesting to see these events through the eyes of a poor person.

There are a couple of remarks i would like to make. I don't like that the Estonians that took part on the soviet side (the reds) are in this movie evildoers that kill people on the streets and rape innocent women. Since i have not read independent Estonian history this might be the whole truth, but this movie should at least have given a explanation to "why?" they (all) are so evil to get a better "vote" from me.

I'm not that fond of love stories in war movies, and this movie contains a love story that not should have been there. It's just silly, it gave me nothing i haven't seen 1000 times before.

The fighting and excitement of battle is totally OK, but there is an element of exaggeration, that lowers credibility, but its still high quality.

To sum up, it's a well made war movie, better than most, but Estonian film makers still have to do better to actually give us something we haven't seen in the cinema's yet. 7/10 mostly because of Estonian environment.

Best danish film since "Festen"
2 September 2005
Usually i can't stand romance movies, they always tend to exaggerate everything about love and relationships in a way that i just plain stupid. But this movie manages to keep a nice pace and great cinematography. The movie built up my expectations for every minute and manages to fulfill them, and this is just incredible.

This is the best danish film i have seen since Festen (The Celebration), i have seen a lot of danish movies but "Festen" and "Italiensk for begyndere" stand out in a remarkable way.

If you liked this movie a would like to recommend movies from from Swedish director Lukas Moodysson, movies like "Fucking Åmal" and "Tillsammans" for example.

Nice film with a some surprises
11 July 2005
I watched the DVD today. Since I didn't know anything about the movie everything was new to me, and in whole the movie felt like a very positive surprise.

The story is about a family, where the man and wife work as actors but haven't had a good pay job in a while, and they have trouble coming up with paying the mortgage on the house, and eviction is imminent. The family also includes a young son and and 2 daughters where the oldest one is 16.

The live on the countryside. And one day a young Columbian man shows up and rents a guest house nearby. The parents in the family gets to know him and he introduces some wild ideas in there life, like smoking marijuana and a quick-and-dirty solution to their money problem. Here the fun begins.

Great dramacomedy
1 September 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't really a romantic comedy to me, it is more of a drama film that is made to look like a comedy because else it would not sell as many movie tickets. The drama part of this comedy gives it a depth that other movies is this genre doesn't have.

None the less this movie makes you laugh a lot. There are many scenes with toally crazy situations where i laughed my pants off.

*spoilers*

A movie about a handicapped girl with a alchoholic mother is more of a drama film than anything. All her friends are alchoholics and hang out in the ghetto. The girl even tries to commit suicide in one scene, this makes strong impression on me. But as this girl has a lovely personality the main male charachter can't seem to forget...

*end spoilers*

I can recommend this movie for everyone that likes swedish comedy and drama movies. 8/10.

Doesn't leave you untouched
1 September 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This move touched my mind. It is a drama film with some comedian lines here and there. There are a few emotionally strong scenes with mourning that can make one cry. The whole message is about love and family.

*Spoilers*

It is a family drama where the mother in the family dies of cancer, this of course affect the family. The father starts drinking and the oldest son of age 17 have to take care of his smaller sister and smaller brother. There is a lot of funeral scenes that can be a little strong. When all is dark and seemes to end in an tragedy a maid shows up to help cleaning their house. Some love arises and the film has a slow turn to the better side.

*end Spoilers*

I can recommed this movie for everyone, 9/10.

Underrated horror sci-fi
25 April 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched this movie twice, and both times i found it interesting and scary. I know that it could have been better if this.. and that, but i cant help liking this movie anyway.

Now to the good part:

spoilers

It is a horror movie without aliens, this is the best part, there is absolutely no aliens. I wish there were more of this no aliens sci-fi movies.

Most of the main characters get killed, thats right, only a few survive the mission.

spoilers

Design of the spaceships is beautiful, and the filming is great.

I simply can't help liking this movie a lot.

This movie get 8/10 from me and is one of the best horror sci-fi movies i have seen.

Very interesting!
26 March 2003
I enjoyed this documentary, sometimes I laughed and sometimes my stomach almost turned inside out (when murder scenes are shown). Hopefully more of these documentaries that criticize western society will be made, we have a lot to learn about ourselves and Michel Moore is a hero who speaks straight out.
