How Shipwreck Got His Groove Back (2004)
Amazingly Hilarious
Saw this at the Wilmington Film Festival. Clever script and even more clever humor make this one of the best ten minutes I've spent in my life. Nifty little editing tricks help bring out some of the humor. Voices are perfect for the characters and the animations, though never intended by Hasbro, add to the comedic factor. The comedy never had to resort to bathroom-style humor either. It was funny enough without excessive swearing or sexual innuendo. I never realized how fruity G.I. Joe was. This short helped bring that more to light. It got tons of laughs at the festival... dare I say more than some of the greats such as John Dilworth and Don Hertzfeldt.
The Junction Boys (2002)
More drama and less football than I expected...
When I saw this movie being previewed, I figured we'd see all the sweat and tears portion of the movie in preparation for game day. I guess I was a little surprised when game day never came. Be that as it may, the movie generated an atmosphere completely fitting for the setting. The acting was better than average and the accents, to me, were very believable. I enjoyed it, but I wish we could have seen some games.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
What are you people smoking?
Greatest film of all time? Give me a break. It was entertaining, but to put it on the same level as Shawshank, Godfather, Schindler, Star Wars, etc. is an insult to the existence of mankind. I found myself looking at my watch two hours into the movie and wishing upon everything I could think of (including my empty bag of Skittles) that the movie would end. The acting was good, and the special effects were very good, but the hard part was already done when the book was written. I think this movie got so much hype because of the fanatics out there who live and die by the book (the same people who actually converse in Klingon). Quite frankly it sickens me to see this movie on everyone's "A" list. People who loved the book are so blind with devotion to that book that they don't know the difference between a great film (Memento, Apocalypse Now) and an entertaining movie (Lord of the Rings). People need to get real... or get out of the house more.
Event Horizon (1997)
Truly creepy
If you ever want to be seriously creeped out and have your mind messed with, watch this movie late one night. The special effects are generally great with a few exceptions where they are average. The story is pretty unique and the acting is above average. While I wouldn't rank this in my "best movies" category, it definitely goes in my "most disturbing" somewhere in the middle.
