Nope (2022)
On the fence
Film broke down into 10% horror, 90% build
Horror elements - genuinely some very decent horror, in fact some of the best I've seen in a long time
Build - just....weird. Long, unessacery, could have cut down a good hour of the 'build' and injected some more of that a-class horror and this could have been a stunning horror pic
No issues with the acting. No issues with the design. No issues with character decision making (a classic pitfall of many horrors).
But sadly overall this film just didn't deliver and did not live up to the rating (currently 6.8). But I'm hoping the team behind it have another crack at the genre because there's definitely some potential there.
The Pope's Exorcist (2023)
Very boring
Sorry folks, this film bored me out of my mind. Despite paying £10 to go see it, I was still tempted to walk out and head to the bar.
A lot of cringey 'comedy' and not remotely scary. The pairing of the demonic voice and the boy just felt awkward. Plus lots of characters making very obviously stupid choices (more than your average horror).
The story didn't offer any unique ideas and seemed to be a lot of recycled tropes from horrors past.
A couple of good visual aspects is all that really earned stars for me.
This might be a good entry level horror for someone that wants to lightly dip their toe into the abyss.
Yawn fest.
Prey (2022)
Concept joy
I loved this film.
A little slow to get going but great action/thrills once it ramps up!
And don't get me started on the design. Some concept artists had so much fun with this project and it really shows.
A lot of the reviews seem to be from men with fragile egos not liking a female lead who is kick ass. Calm down boys, just enjoy the ride.
Antlers (2021)
Creature feature with a dash of disturb
If you're hunting for monsters then you'll find them here - a slow burn with a mixture of actual horror and disturbing horror
And yes, this is still a creature feature at the heart. Taking an old legend and giving it some will deserved screen time.
I don't understand the low reviews, I thought this was a great film. Acting was good, script was good, and design was awesome.
Turning Red (2022)
Calm down guys, why so mad?
Let's face it, the movie has an underlying story - periods. Big shock horror, most young women have to go through this. What's wrong with it being referenced in a film aimed at girls?
I thought the story was very reminiscent for many girls that grew up in the 90s.
Yes it's predictable. But it's fun. And ultimately a reminder that as good as it is to love and respect your family, you also need to care about you.
Watch and enjoy 😊
Centaurworld (2021)
Strap in for weird
It's Adventure Time meets Disney with a little bit of mpl thrown in
If you can't hack weird then steer clear, but if you're open minded then you'll love the ride.
A blend of borderline epic Disney songs (think singing level of Let it go), goofy uncomfortable characters, and more sass than most can handle. There is a genuinely endearing plot in amongst the chaotic trip through this new world.
Can't wait for season 2.
The Bay (2012)
Underrated
Found Footage style films are seemingly very marmite - if you can hack the mix of shooting styles i.e. 'news report', 'CCTV' etc then I would highly recommend giving this a go.
Personally I found the main lady a bit...over the top, but she doesn't feature too strongly so it's only a minor irk.
The film itself has a nice build, before reaching a successful climax. I liked the basic concept, and think it did well on a small budget.
Creepy with a little visual gore to heighten the experience.
An underrated horror with just enough reality to convince you going in the water might not be a good idea.
Midsommar (2019)
A horror worth watching twice
This film is slow to cook, but throughout you begin to build a sense of dread. Touching on a multitude of themes that will hit home with a large spread of the audience.
The story relies on making it's audience uncomfortable rather than jump scares or gore - and it does it very well. The kind of film that will leave you needing a feel good injection to recover.
As for the second watch, this film is littered with symbolism - and when watching it over again you'll be amazed at everything you missed.
Creepshow (2019)
Fiendishly Fun
A nice range of horror genres, with a good injection of comedy, super cheese, and of course gore!
Each tale is unrelated to the last, with a mix of styles from Comic Book Techno to Modern Day Horror. Each tale is introduced by the loveable chuckling creep which adds to the fun.
Some of these I wouldn't technically class as horror but they are a delight none the less. If you're open to a bit of silliness, then treat yourself to this collection. I can't wait for the next round!
Vivarium (2019)
Unsettling, but ultimately unsatisfying
5 stars because this film does deserve some credit.
The premise is good, and some of the scenes have a good dollop of creepiness. The film has a very high angst feel throughout but is let down by the ending.
I'm all for not spoon feeding audiences, but if you have a concept then explore it, don't rely on a couple of tiny hints - play it out! Like so many horrors, this film was ultimately let down by it's ending. If you like getting your answers in a movie then steer well clear of this one. It's not an ambiguous ending, it was just flat.
