WandaVision (2021)
Surprising
When I entered this show, I was not sure what to expect. This was going to be the first Marvel TV show that is connected to the cinematic universe. The only Marvel show I saw before this was Agent Carter, which is a shame that it was canceled as it was one of my favourite shows.
To put it simply, this show was a ride! And it was absolutely fun trying to piece out the story and it's connection to the Marvel universe through tidbits in every episode. Not to mention it is experimental with filming as a medium, and the film student in me was having a blast at seeing how those all connect to the overarching story.
Definitely recommend this TV show!
Wynonna Earp (2016)
One of a kind!
I have just recently finished the show and I finally can leave a review here!
Firstly, I have been watching this show since the first season, and keeping up with it is totally worth it! It's such a charming show, with the way it handles humour, the serious moments and all the supernatural shenanigans in between.
If I were making this review emotionally, I would have given it a 10/10, but even I know that the show is not perfect, which it absolutely knows! This show isn't made on the highest budget, so the CGI is a bit lacking or campy looking at times but even the show knows this and doesn't take itself seriously. The chemistry between the characters is also very believable, and they work well together as a group that I remember every person who has come and gone despite the many years this show has been running.
Usually I'll mention more but this show is honestly enjoyed the best without the spoilers. So all I can do is highly recommend anyone interested to watch it! Other than being an overall funny show, it has also made history with choices in storyline and production. Truly everyone who worked on this show were absolutely amazing and have even inspired me.
This show is my comfort show, and now that it has been finished, I'll pass the torch to any latecomers to really give this show a chance!
Earper for life!!!
Runaways (2017)
Underrated gem!
I haven't read the comics, so this is coming purely from a TV series reviewer on how they have enjoyed this show. This show was always on my radar, and honestly should be given a show despite the reviews emanating in this section. So firstly I highly suggest a watch!
I find it personally to be a more honest depiction of how teenagers would deal with the issues that are faced with. This show presents this moral dilemma from seeing people black and white, and the reality that the world is morally grey, giving view of how these teenagers have to question their world with their newfound knowledge.
This show also gives a good amount of diverse and LGBT representation I believe is sorely needed in media, and this show heralds it forward with normalising it by it being 'just fact' with the teens realities.
In terms of effects, I think they all work, especially some scenes where there is a certain character which I'm always guessing if they are either using a prop head of VFX. Sometimes it looks 'obvious' but I hand it to the budget and that VFX can point out the 'otherworldly' nature of it in comparison to the live action. It however does get a bit wonky in an episode in season 3, but I believe it is because of the limited budget they may have had pertaining to the crossover in that episode.
There is an issue with the other reviews I've been seeing here, and I think you should disregard them and give this show a shot. Many of these reviews are short without explanation, and are in regards to how a character is 'too annoying'. It is a character trait of hers, and personally I've met people in real life like her (especially in the generation that this show portrays). However, I do agree that this show does not use this character more because of budgeting issues, and honestly as much as I love the actor they probably should've done an alternative for the character for this issue.
If you can understand that it is not the show trying to be 'woke' but just an aspect of a character that had this trait in the comics, then I believe that this show is honestly needing more attention, especially after the cancellation... so please give this show a watch! It's made me interested enough to check out the comics after finishing it!
Steven Universe (2013)
A show worth watching
Personally I started watching this show when it was beginning back in 2013, and in the 7 years of its run it has developed into a show that is one of the greatest gems in this turn of modern animation.
Enjoyment:
One thing I definitely liked about this show was that is can be enjoyed by people of all ages, making it fun to watch with family and friends. The surprisingly witty humour embedded into the show was one of the reasons it kept me watching. Definitely, the most enjoyment I got out of the show is in the overarching story being weaved into the background and unfolding in the events occurring. However, this show does have it's episodes that don't focus on story and feel out place (especially this being a lot in season 1), the episodes are only 11 minutes so once you get past season one, the little gems of story definitely pop out in the seasons afterwards.
Representation:
This show does get one thing right and that is the representation of all different types of people, whether it is ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality and also offers relatability in tacking mental health topics that anyone can understand. If this all sounds 'too much' for a children's show, you definitely need to check yourself and give this show a chance as most of the representation in the show isn't right up in your face and has relationships and different types of people all shown normally (as it should be in most shows). As a person part of minorities in some of these groups, this show help me and possibly other people, feel normal as it is being normalised in the show.
Heart and music:
This show is definitely known for its heart, and there are many episodes that show this (but that's all for you to find out :D). With the mix of representation in the show, different dynamics and relationships are shown, mostly accompanied by a sweet soundtrack full of many songs given to a variety of characters that project their emotional state, helping you understand how they feel. The show is very emotionally driven and the best way to explain it is to watch it and experience it yourself.
Whilst this show is not perfect, I highly recommend to give it a chance and enjoy this show for what it brings to the table rather than some issues that people may have after seeing some bad reviews or people rant about it. So please go watch it now if you haven't already!
