Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (2013)
Better Left Unknown
I attempted to watch this series but was totally turned off by his racist , sexist and bigoted comments and attitudes. This show should have been a doorway into another culture, with its food and traditions. Sadly it's not even about the food or culture. It's about this homely, hateful, painfully heartless fool and his blowfish of the day.Better Left Unknown. Very sad this is the kind of ignorance that wins awards....but then....bad tv and awards sorta go hand and hand .....one feeds the other...sorry, not a fan. Not even a little. Huge thumbs down. Better Left Unknown

Witness (1985)
An Amish Witness
This film interested me because of the Amish setting and to see Harrison Ford. His stylish and dramatic scenes as well as playful moments made him the show stealer. A young Amish boy is the only witness to a murder and Harrison For d's character , John Booker, hides in the Amish country and taking on their lifestyle to protect this young boy. All goes well until he falls in love with an Amish girl. I thought the issues and differences were handled respectfully and true. As the story unfolds more and more of the Amish tradition is brought to light in a good way. Positive and inclusive. His charm and humor win the hearts of many but not all the Amish.
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Thor rising
I really enjoyed this movie, although it was a bit over the top. But that's what sold the film for me. The effects and lighting set the perfect back drop and mood. Some of the best parts were worked into the effects as well.....like Thor flying to the scene and holding his arm up waiting for the hammer......some of the space scenes .....I also thought the fight scenes were realistic for this film and done well. The anger that turns to rage seem logical and acted well. The costumes fit the characters and were done very well. Loki and Thor really sold the action for me. Driving in the space mobile through people.....trees.....buildings......great stuff. I wasn't too sure about this movie before watching it, but I thought it was exciting and action packed and a wonderful use of effects/CGI. I'd recommend this to fans of this genre and almost anyone else. They may be as surprised and happy you did.
12 Years a Slave (2013)
feeling
A film that will bring out your feelings. Whatever they may be. Seeing the senseless brutality and savage treatment of men or women because they were born with a different color skin than you. The acting is superb and will make you feel their anguish and pain. It's pitiful to see and angered me greatly throughout this film. The stage sets and clothing were believable. You had a feeling of entering this time in history which helped the film incredibly. Seeing him hanging from a noose on a tree, put there for punishment..... Seeing other young men hung for any excuse, seeing the women slapped and taken advantage of...I wanted to jump through the screen and try to help these people. I'd recommend this film for a more mature audience but I'd definitely recommend you see it.
Gravity (2013)
a little space
I really enjoyed this movie and the effort and hard work it must have taken for some of the scenes......I like the outer space element but it was predictable and didn't look realistic. Bullock's characters fear seems to lighten quickly considering her predicament. And the lines were a bit weak but for some reason despite all that I was totally taken in and liked it overall. Maybe I'm just to big a Bullock fan. I think seeing it in 3D would help the film but a bit of help with the lines would really improve this more. Clooneys lines as well. The overall effect was awe and amazement at the thought of actually being lost in space but as the movie went on my enthusiasm lessened. As did its believability. And predictability. Bullock was the only saving grace. Seeing her float around in a spacesuit is worth the price of admission.
Premonition (2007)
Be he alive....Be he dead
Bollock is a stand out in this psychological thriller that focuses on her characters life. One day she is told her husband has passed away......the next day she awakes to find he's alive. Then he's gone again. She is confused and depressed and her friends and family are convinced she's insane. She starts to wonder about her own state of mind and just does such a true and strong depiction acting out this character. Her confusion and fear, the scene when she is swirling it all through her mind in the middle of a street.....brought back to reality by the cars horn. Good stuff. Although this is an older film It is one worth seeing. It will hold your interest and you'll want to see again.
Phone Booth (2002)
call me
I started watching this waiting for another show to start but I enjoyed it enough to watch the whole movie. Farrell plays such a convincing part.... Trapped in a phone booth by a snipers rifle, and his own dirty deeds. His frustration and fear obvious.. I also liked Forest Whitaker s part. He has a way of bringing such reality to his characters, you can easily relate to him as Captain Ramsey. The action in this movie is constant and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The sniper targets when aimed on body parts were eerie, terrifying as you'd imagine. Kate Holmes is the mistress he is calling in the phone booth.....when the phone rings back with an extortionist on the other end with a lot of personal info....its hard not to get involved in this gripping action packet film.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
metal brawn
I wasn't sure if I'd like this. I like Mickey Rourke and have been a fan of his for years. I like Scarlett Johansson also......Robert Downey Jr. And I liked this movie. Quite a bit.
One of my favorite parts was near the beginning ......with the cars ripping up, literally. And Rourke s character striding down the track. I love the action and muscle......the cars and special effects. An exciting way to start an action movie. This a good sequel and exciting. I loved the robot assembly lines ....very cool and strange to think about. Its kinda like an action science fiction combo. Lots of muscle and brawn, entertaining thrills and spontaneous combustion. This was a nice surprise. I'd recommend this.
The Possession (2012)
a must see
You always take your chances on films based on possession but this one was worth watching. Based on a true story the fear and terror this family experienced was done in a convincing way making it easy to relate to the characters. The movie starts when a dad with his two daughters goes to a garage sale and buy an old wooden box. As the younger girl becomes more obsessed with the box it begins taking control of her and eventually possessing her. And taking over the family's peace of mind. I thought the moth scenes were well done and believable. The lighting and camera angle really helped the atmosphere of suspense. I enjoyed this movie and it held my interest throughout the movie. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in watching a good paranormal/horror film.
Blended (2014)
♥Blended
I went to see this film and was not sure what to expect. I've heard its only mediocre . But I disagree. For me, this was a mix of loving and laughing. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore work so well together. The humor of some of their scenes were classic. Like when they are vacationing in Africa and the hot air balloon ride. The type of humor that is ageless and what I've grown to expect some Sandler. I think this movie may be a slow riser. But will be one of those comedies that become classic to its genre. It seems to be aimed at a younger audience but all ages would enjoy the antics and humorous banter between Sandler and Barrymore's characters. But I have always been a fan of both. The name is definitely perfect, as you see these two families come together and help each other and their children. It's a nice to see. And reminds us that even opposites can find a common ground between them.
Black Rock (2012)
Good story....bad movie
This movie is about 3 girls who were friends growing up, get together and go to an isolated island. You'd think they'd spend time catching up but almost immediately meet up with.....yup, 3 guys. Who turn out to be not so friendly. Quickly it turns into an all out girl vs guy fight for survival. And to get back off island alive. All the characters are poorly developed and seem so dry and unbelievable. The storyline is predictable and slow. Maybe even tedious. It's a shame because the story sounded good and had a decent cover. This movie had great potential that was not realized. It's a shame more time wasn't spent on this movie.
The Dollanganger Saga: Petals on the Wind (2014)
real time drama
I've read this series several times and had my reservations that the film could be as riveting as the novels. And this being the second in the series further made me leery. But it was all for no reason.... all this film was intriguing from start to finish. Heather Grahams role is done so well and really brings a lot to the screen and her character. This is such a sad horrifying story that is sad and compelling as much as it is horrifying. It dares to bring what many feel are taboo or shocking subjects....child abuse.....incest.....romantic triangles....I loved this and am hoping for the third book to be made into a movie. Well done and highly recommended .
Prisoners (2013)
Search For Two Girls Continues
Two young girls, Anna and Joy, disappear and remain missing overnight. After a search team turns up nothing, the only clue is a suspicious looking RV parked in the area around the time of their disappearance. After the owner is taken into custody, the owner still remains silent. Detective Loki, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, gives the best performance of the film. As a father of one of the missing girls and as a detective he is convincing. Very dark and violent in parts but it doesn't distract from the overall theme of the movie. Or the storyline. Where are the missing girls?? And will Detective Loki find them? Very suspenseful and full of action. A good film for mature audience s
Friends with Kids (2011)
Wiig Wiig where are you?
Two plutonic friends decide to have a baby but not marry, to avoid the toll kids may have on their marriage. The characters seem uninspired and personal interaction seemed stale. Passionless. The humor wasn't there for me. I kept waiting for the punch line, even the actors seemed stiff and bored. Jennifer Westfeldt, the films writer ,director, and actor made this slow mover hard to really get into, with predictable scenes and ending. Kristin Wiig's character maybe could have added some humor had the character hadn't been hidden in the background.
Although slow moving this was entertaining I just kept waiting for the pace to speed up.
Meridian (1990)
saved by Sherilyn
I had never heard of this movie but it was included in a box set of horror I found in a bargain bin. Obviously from a VHS copy, the grainy screen added to the films overall aura. Little Red Riding Hood meets Beauty and the Beast is what came to mind. It is an interesting adult themed version of two girls trip To Italy, one to pursue art the other to take possession of an inherited castle. I thought the pace was rather slow and the scenes of love and rather flat, lacking that abandon I look for in love scenes, leaving the story rather cold. But the lush scenery helped make up for the loss of depth in the theme. Sherilyn Flynn made this bearable for me.
Rio 2 (2014)
lets all sing like the birdies sing
The thing I most enjoyed was the silly humor. In some movies of this genre the humor can upset the whole continuity of the film. But not here. The ruffled feathers and facial expressions endeared them to me. The entertainment doesn't stop there.......the rendition of the song " I will survive" was a high point, And the use of the swiss army knife to aid the In cutting down Brazil nuts to use as a ball in sports was priceless. The animation is done well but am still wondering if the frog wasn't a gummy edible substance. Over all I thought it rather intriguing the great use of touching on the theme of the Amazonian jungle and rainbow forestry were a great way to bring some info to people of all ages ,of these beautiful and timeless works of nature. A fun and inspiring experience anyone could enjoy,
Brick Mansions (2014)
lights camera action
If you enjoy the action genre that includes over the top stunts and action shots that leave you marveling at the athletics and wishing you could do that, while chuckling to yourself "seriously", you will enjoy this as much as I did. I was captured from beginning to end. But I will admit I'm a huge fan of these types of over the top but completely entertaining (for me, anyway) action flicks. The one man army mentality and opening scenes live up to that expectation. Chase scenes, fight scenes that produce no wounds or blood *chuckle* add to the action.Although I have never seen the French film this replicated, I enjoyed this version.
