A Kind of Spark (2023)
Makes teachers look inadequate.
There are many things I like about this show. I'm an adult who has always struggled to fit in and I love how it pushes that being yourself is always better than trying to be like everyone else.
However as a teacher it angers me what Miss Murphy did. She did not use best practice at all and should have been fired for calling a child a freak and definitely should not have been alone with a child. I'm sure there are black and white teachers who can't deal with students with different needs. But it isn't all of them and we get professional development on how to best differentiate for all the different needs in the class. The history project she gave Keedie's class should have had some different options for how they were to present it. Like oral, written artwork etc... unless it is an English subject it is not assessing writing. There are many other ways that this show inaccurately portrays teachers and schools in this day and age but I know that it wouldn't get the point across as much so I do understand that.
Call Me Kat (2021)
Missed the point of the original UK show
I absolutely love Miranda so I really wanted to love this show. Mayim is great in it as the lead but Kat is not like Miranda in the original UK version. Miranda in the original is awkward, quirky and while doesn't apologies about this part of herself she is still self conscious and throughout her journey of the show begins to really accept and love herself. Kat from the get go is confident and seems to have her life figured out. The awkwardness doesn't seem to come naturally. Miranda was a character that just about everyone can relate to in some way. Kat doesn't feel that way. I just don't think it has worked well in an American setting. The only way American shows that were from another country work is by taking on a life of thier own. The Office US is an example of this.
In saying all of this I have still had some laughs while watching the first 2 eps and I see potential, but as I said it's going to have to have a life of it's own and go further away from Miranda if it wants to succeed.
