Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds (2006)
Stink bomb
Let's put it this way:
Variety writes: "Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds" -- and the film-making continues to be just as sloppy.
You can't argue with Variety, the showbiz bible. This film probably has two more laughs than the first film, Eating Out, which means it has exactly TWO laughs. Trouble is I can't remember what they are now. What I remember is some really bad acting -- just like in the first film. I remember a stupid script that could have been written by a horny gay high school student. I can't comment on the direction since there isn't evidence of any. My problem with films like this is that they create such a negative image of gays and lesbians for the straight community. The characters are stereotypes. I don't know people like the characters in this film and I don't want to. Why can't the producers of this movie use their financing powers for good?
Normal (2003)
Wonderful!
This film has provocative subject matter that's handled with taste, sensitivity, and, more unexpectedly, a great deal of humor! Director Jane Anderson also wrote the script and did a bang up job! She's also responsible for the Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom film with Holly Hunter which was so good a decade ago. Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson seem like shoo-ins for Emmys next year. Watch for this and you won't regret it.
An Unexpected Love (2003)
Run of the mill
I had to do a search on the actresses to find the board of this film because the title is now An Unexpected Love. It's not really worth looking for but I was unfamiliar with both leads and wondered why they were headlining a lesbian flick on Lifetime. Everything's pretty restrained and you don't really get an idea of who these characters are so, as a viewer, I wasn't able to become emotionally invested in the storyline. I guess I'm not the target audience for this but I'm not sure who is. Everything's muted and soft focus and earth tones...nothing's very interesting. I had a prurient interest in seeing two women make out but it's handled so discreetly that I was disappointed. Rent Personal Best instead.
Play Dead (2001)
Not the worst but not very good
I've seen worse films but this was a waste of time and money. It was screened at the Gay and Lesbian festival here and there were some funny parts but not enough to make it worth seeing. The acting wasn't very good and the script made people wince.
