The Road Dance (2021)
The conclusion is stupid
The conclusion is so stupid that I both saw it coming from a mile off and then was sure it couldn't be, actually finding the thought amusing. Then it actually came to it and the most idiotic reveal (in a very unlikely way) was made and robbed the film off any point it might have been able to make. It's a build up to nothing. A very unconvincing nothing.
Other than that, it's not badly made, so you can watch it if you don't mind not actually getting a worthwhile story, one that actually has something to say, out of it.
I like the setting and wish they would've done more with that, it's quite rare to get a reasonable drama set in the past.
Richard Jewell (2019)
A valuable production
It's a genuinely moving story, the overall production feels very sincere. Apart from being great evening entertainment, I applaud the choice of subject, and the way it was presented, as it shines light on a real life case of shocking injustice, and deals with underlying subjects applicable to everyone who's interested.
Our whole group thoroughly enjoyed the film, and to me it feels like a valuable contribution to the arts, as not "only" entertainment, but an observation, a focus on a little bit of life.
A little bit of truth, not only on the superficial level of retelling a "true story", but the understanding and highlighting of underlying mechanisms ruling over life, without turning to cheap clichés or stupid conclusions, without becoming a lecture (which is more than can be said about most films, and is the true purpose of art).
Operation Mincemeat (2021)
Unfortunately not what it could have been
The actors are great, the film is beautifully shot. But the whole atmosphere is just off. The "love story" is cringeworthy and feels forced. Why we couldn't get some serious writers to add some depth to the film is beyond me. Instead the whole film was taken over by the most unnecessary romance I've seen for years.
The potential was great, but the film missed the point and focused on a subpar plotline that weren't even worked through properly. What a waste.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Terrible excuse of a period drama
Fellowes seems content with degrading himself for the monetary compensation. He is not a particularly impressive storyteller, we all know that, but this is low, even for him. (Hard to believe that HBO did this, it feels more like a lifetime production.)
Downton Abbey, for the soap it was, had a place. This show, however, lacks any substance -whatsoever, the plot is boring and unrealistic, so are the characters (flat as can be), who at random have to double as cheap, cartoonish comic relief, and never show any depth which might spark some interest in them, or their journey. The tone is generally off-putting, seeking to mock the core elements of period drama, for the sake of "freshening up" the genre, I gather. The whole series reeks of major editorial interference to the detriment of the true potential the original idea might have had.
Inconsistencies and far fetched conclusions that don't actually make sense, a plot that simply cannot be taken seriously.
It gets worse throughout the series.
Projects like this make one wonder how americans aren't offended by the patronisingly stuped remakes they get. Are you actually satisfied with dumbed down, cheap rip-offs of shows you have watched ten years ago?
Resident Alien (2021)
Depends - definitely skip season 2
Despite very apparent millenial influences, the characters are generally worthwhile and serve their purpose, but it's on the brink of going off into tangents, some jibes are just stupid and will date the show unnecessarily badly.
If you can bare the occasional cringe of radical talking points being inserted into useless one-liners, this show is actually worth a try.
Tudyk's acting makes this show.
The 2nd season totally derailed and has nothing to do with the original storyline. Instead you get boring and annoyingly millenial tropes. Unfunny, badly written and uninteresting characters get more screentime than THE RESIDENT ALIEN, he becomes a minor plot tool and is reduced to being mediocre comedic relief for the soap this has become.
Here Comes the Boom (2012)
We all know this isn't some avantgarde project
This film is great light entertainment: funny, actually quite good writing and the characters are believable. The story is wholesome without being too corny. Oh, and all in all it's quite clean, which is rarely seen nowadays. You won't regret spending a casual evening watching this one.
Ted Lasso: Do the Right-est Thing (2021)
Idiotic plot
Not that I expected much from the show, I mainly watch it to see Jason Sudeikis, but this is not only a cheap idea, but the execution is sloppy.
Colossal (2016)
Neglected potential
The film tried to come off as intelligent, but it really isn't. The conclusion wasn't thought through properly, it doesn't make sense. Her "heroic act" is impossible, and it doesn't enrich the characters/their development through the story whatsoever. There is no logical thread that holds the film together and no point. Is the film about her fight against alcoholism? About how to deal with people looking down on her and treating her like a child? About taking responsibility? About the value of human life? No one knows.
Jason Sudeikis is a joy to watch, so if that's your reason, don't hold back.
Sense and Sensibility (1995)
Well established story, great actors and beautiful cinematography
The content holds itself, nicely written and acted, but the finish is really rather nice and something I adore when found in otherwise good films. I regularly rewatch it and find myself amazed by the enjoyment I get time after time.
The scene before last never fails to bring me to tears, which I regard as a comment on how well the script and acting, and the pacing of the film is done.
