Hell on Wheels: Slaughterhouse (2012)
Season 2, Episode 3
7/10
The show goes on
28 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
While the episode was entertaining, it didn't quite live up to my expectation after the end of episode two. That's probably more of my fault then the show's though. It had a good storyline with the brothers, as yet more characters slide down a tragic path in the hard world of the frontier. Doing things that we in the modern world would rarely consider is a matter of survival their harsh reality. None of the other characters felt particularly compelling in this episode, although the Swede continues to draw you in with uncertainty every time he's on screen.

Overall, it was a fairly good episode that moved things along but didn't stick out in any huge way to me.

Hell on Wheels: Durant, Nebraska (2012)
Season 2, Episode 2
8/10
Back on track
26 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a sure improvement over the season opener. The biggest thing was the charm it had with everyone's reaction to seeing Cullen back. That made for a strong ending and brought excitement for the upcoming episodes, but the rest of the episode was solid too. Durant's train ride conversation ended with the best possible answer to Cullen's question. Seeing Lily with Durant is a little disappointing, but often characters in the show make decisions that as an audience you won't like but make perfect sense for the character. The new problems that come with the push into Cheyenne territory will surely only be slightly different than last season. I'm curious to see if the Swede's roll or the Irish boy's change during the season. A little bit of satisfaction was also to be had with Elam taking out the murderer, despite the fact that he was manipulated by Lily.

Overall, I felt a lot more connected with the characters again in this one, and bringing Cullen back into the fold really helped bring things back together.

Hell on Wheels: Viva La Mexico (2012)
Season 2, Episode 1
7/10
A slow start to the season.
26 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had stuff happening with the train robberies and such, but it just felt like it lacked the core chemistry of the first season that kept things interesting. Elam was still facing adjustments with his new position in the world, and Lily is kind of settled. With them kind of stagnant and Cullen on a not very interesting temporary side story, it just wasn't particularly engaging. The best part of the episode was the doctor that knew Cullen from before.

Overall the episode was fine, but it definitely felt like coming back from a long break and trying to get to know the characters again despite watching it a day after the season one finale on streaming.

Rush (I) (2013)
8/10
A solidly entertaining, historical racing movie
22 November 2020
The movie was entertaining throughout with a lot of good character stuff off the track to keep non-race fans interested. On the track, it was fast and gripping with all the excitement of a good sports movie. Additionally, a little research after the movie shows that it got most things pretty accurate. Of course there is a little bit of Hollywood dramatization thrown in there, particularly with the two racers' rivalrous relationship. Niki Lauda himself was consulted a lot on the film and spent a good deal of time with actor Daniel Bruhl in preparation. They also used several of the original race cars in the film itself.

Overall this was a really entertaining sports movie that most people will probably like and race fans will love.

Warrior (2011)
9/10
A thoroughly enjoyable journey.
18 November 2020
Warrior has a pretty simple stories with some cliches that might bother people, but it is so well done with such heart that I just didn't care. Similar to A Knight's Tale, the movie far exceeds the simplicity or sometimes outright silliness of it's premise. It is further elevated by some symbolism and a few interpretations of events that other reviewers have already noted. Everybody in the movie was good, but Edgerton, Hardy, and Nolte were really top notch. The movie wraps you up in the characters struggles so tight that you just hang on for the ride and let the emotions wash over you.

If you don't find yourself connecting with the characters and are instead picking at the threads, you'll probably hate this movie, but most people are going to be in for a great experience.

Ninja Scroll (1993)
7/10
A well done anime
18 November 2020
Ninja Scroll is a pretty solid movie. It has interesting characters who even come across well in the English dub. The plot moves along quickly with a fair bit of nudity and graphic violence. It has a variety of interesting villains with some likeable heroes and overall I enjoyed the characters. The action and animation really sets this apart from many animes. A lot of them suffer from a severe amount of static images or repeat animations, but this one was well animated and engaging to look at.

Ninja Scroll probably isn't going to suddenly make a believer out of a non-anime fan but it's definitely one of the better ones and a good place to start if you're interested.

Moneyball (2011)
7/10
A really interesting story with a fairly good movie
17 November 2020
The story behind the movie is really interesting. As with any movie "based on" real events, there is some fudging of the details for cinematic effect, but the main plot gets it pretty accurate. Everyone in the movie plays there part well, including the kind of invented character for Jonah Hill. The movie is a little long and kind of slow though, without much of the usual cheering drama involved in a sports movie. I would only recommend it for people who are already into sports, especially baseball, or are intrigued by the story before the movie starts.

Mile 22 (2018)

Not quite there
17 November 2020
Overall this was a relatively entertaining action movie, but it didn't really grab me. It had a fairly simple extraction plot that moves it along without carrying any real emotional investment or weight. The acting was all fine, including Mark Wahlberg. Some people may not like the writing on his hyperactive character, but he portrayed it well. Iko Uwais continues to have gradual improvement on his acting, but he is always excellent in fight scenes. This is where the movies biggest failure comes in. The framing and cuts on the gunfights are okay, but the hand to hand scenes are awful. The director or editor clearly had no idea how to showcase Uwais' ability and it definitely dropped a star off the movie for me. I don't feel like I wasted my time watching this, but I don't see myself coming back for another viewing.
