The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)
Simple story in the middle of no where, and it works.
...I was really surprised the movie was this good. Its premise is simple. Small diner in middle of nowhere. Where nothing really happens. Life is a cup of coffee and you live on.
The assemblance of character cast was interesting. No big names, just simple people that made it work. They are good at what they do. They entertain us, that made the difference. It gave the moments grit from all sides of life. Crooks, geeks, elderly, blue collars..etc.
Directer did great job, keeping us idling along just right. It never got boring. Kept us waiting for what could or would happen next.
Ambiance worked great. Dry, hot, desolate weather. How can anyone live here? But they do.
Very enjoyable, flick.
Sleeping Dogs (2024)
..its Russel Crowe. What else is there?
Russ is that blue chip actor, never fails to bring the performance. Such a treat to watch. As for Sleeping Dogs, its good flick.
Its crinkles around the narrative of "who done it". It does good job, selling and keeping loose ends spread out.
Basically, Russ is lab rat for an Alzheimer's experiment. He struggles with memory loss and the quality of life, that has taken a down turn. Until positive effects begin to work in his favor. Thanks new treatment.
The story builds fine, the actors are complacent. No one searching for that academy award here, with overblown theatrics. The movie is the reward in itself. You have to respect that. Especially in today's hyperbole of want to be's.
I gave it seven.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
...you gotta miss George Lucas fims.
...REmember when Lucas used painted back drops and small scale models for animation effects, coupled with Interesting sound bits? Colorful characters and creatures with great story line?
So what happened? To much money killed the radio star? IN this case director star? Lack of creativity. That's just it.
This movie is a big grey mess. CGI saved this film. If it wasn't for digital animation. It would have been a huge muted color backdrop.
Lots of people, but dull in characters. Lots of big spaces but empty as the old coliseum.
There was scenes of characters riding on big carpet with huge fans blowing on them. This was supposedly surfing a big worm.. Seriously? Get real, in this advance effect generation, gotta do better than that.
Anyhow, you get the picture. Save your money. Wait for the free stream somewhere.
Misanthrope (2023)
....getcha popcorn.
...first of all I watch movies with just the intention of being entertained. And hopefully get my money's worth.
To Catch a Killer. Enjoyable flick.
I felt the movie moved along well with the story line. Building up tension in areas, which then kept us ruminating. Guessing it could go like this or maybe like that.
Shailene Woodley actress from popular Divergent series. Holds down the part well. Gives a believable character of her being a clever cop with abusive past. Which then adds up for why her intuition is right for the situation on hand. She thinks along the same lines as the person doing the killings.
The tension builds up nicely as movie goes along. It fits the bill just right. Good supporting cast from actors, which made everything viably credible.
Overall, an enjoyable flick. 7/10.
The Covenant (2023)
Getcha popcorn. Good flick
Dont know much about Guy Ritchie. So I wont pretend I know his past material.
But he did really well with The Covenant.
A really good flick. Enjoyable, not to predictable of story. The fact that its bast on actual events. Adds another notch of human tenaciousness at its best. Cinematography was also well played out. Shots of dry barren land with its ever life challenging elements. Had me feeling the tension throughout the whole movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal always top notch with good acting display. He's never a let down. True blue chip for cinema. He carried the show all the way. Supporting cast also was very credible. Hey, even the middle east villains did a good job, making you feel the hate for Taliban n such.
Overall, very enjoyably flick. Two thumbs up.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Ant-Man meets Star Wars cantina bar
...gee whizz, where you do you start. Like everyone I was expecting a good show. Not great, but something satisfying. Feeling that my $20, was worth spending.
Best part of the movie is probably the very beginning and very end. WHy? Because it was set in normal atmosphere. The fantasy part is basically the whole movie and what kills it.
The movie is over board done, by to many fantasy characters. They eat up the whole jig. I kept thinking its like Star Wars cantina here.
The story is burdened, by forced scenarios, to many things trying to happen at same time. Its stops being interesting from the beginning. Its basically an Ego movie done by forced imagination.
Then new celebrity stars to further drive in the stake. Nobody cares for Phieffer and Bill Murray. Seriously! Bill Murray. What the hell is he doing in this flick?
What happened to being simple? Just do something that works.
The main characters Rudd, Douglas, Lily..etc. Looked left out. The story made them appear out dry, out of sync. Why? Because there's to much explosion occurring.
Save your time and money.
Its like watching a tennis match. Constantly gyrating back in forth.
Murder Mystery 2 (2023)
...3 stars for the effort.
Just wow, another richy, cliched, loud, boisterous movie from Sandler and Netflix.
This is what I call Microwave movies. A story with no substance. Throw in some hippy music, money, exotic atmosphere, pretty faces and presto, you have a production.
After watching, you feel almost zombiefied from lack of emotion.
It's like being rubbed down with motor oil.
No substance. I watched this film to the tone of. How many movies out there, fall right in this category. Disney tops the list.
These companies must have money to burn. Or they would be more diligently collective about what is produced.
....Sandler can do better.
