Old Henry (2021)
9/10
A really sharp and on-point western.

Finding a decent western is hard - but this one is really worth watching.

A very nice script, very good quality cast and excellent direction . . . So a seriously worthwhile watch.

Really engaging piece of history.
28 November 2021
The Tudors came into Britain's royal history in 1485 when Henry VII was crowned, but the backstory isn't well known.

This short series provides a really worthwhil,e and well-explained look at what happened, centring on Henry's mother, Margaret Beaufort, and her determined struggle to get him into the throne.

The format, using three 3 top-flight actors as on-camera narrators, and very well-produced dramatic re-enactments, was very engaging - I watched all 3 episodes on Sky catch-up in one session.

The language and the action in the re-enactments is rough and tough, and maybe shocking, but reflects real life in that era, when anyone else's life other than your own, was unimportant.

I enjoyed every minute. The only caveat I have is that some minor characters are a little difficult to follow- a couple of mentions and they are gone!

Very entertaining watch!

I came to this film expecting to dump it in the first few minutes, but it turned out to be an excellent watch, with nice characters carried through well by a young cast, and a story line that carried the film through to a slightly unexpected ending.

Overall, fun to watch with some serious twists and some nice dark humour.

Domina (2021–2023)

A good-looking and smart version of genuinely old story . . .
21 May 2021
Just finished watching the final episode of the first series of Domina, a very smart new show from Sky, based on the life of Liva Drusilla - wife of Augustus Caesar. I really liked it, mainly because it continued the theme of complexity and double-dealing initiated in the character by Sian Phillips, who played Livia in the series I, Claudius. I saw that when it originally broadcast in 1976, and have seen it a couple of times since.. This version of her story presents a much younger version of Livia, but I found many similarities and links which enhanced both series. You do need to concentrate to keep up with her, but its a worthwhile effort . . . Give her a watch!

Not great, but not that bad, either . . .
8 May 2021
I've just watched the complete series, and enjoyed it a mild kind of way. It's low budget, the script isn't great, and the acting is ok in parts - I'm glad to say some of the cast members obviously have some fun with it, and that comes through on screen.

Watch a fews eps and see what you think - it would be good if the title got a second series, and a bit more investment in script and story development.

As one of the probably very few people who can remember watching William Hartnell as Dr Who, I can testify to the show's rough edges and iffy bits - so don't be too enthusiastic about slating a programme like this. It could turn around with a second series green light.

A Decent Watch . . .
25 April 2021
Although its a bit of a slow starter, I thought this film was a decent enough watch when there isn't much on TV.

Story was basic, acting and direction was OK - straightforward and workmanlike, and once started, the story zipped along nicely.

The only thing I didn't really liike was the use of the f-word in virtually every sentence. Used as a bit more of a bomb, it has a little more impact - but if its the writers adverb of choice, it becomes rather more monotonous . . .

I like "fantasy" action movies . . . watch, enjoy, forget . .
12 March 2021
Unlike many people, it seems, I do like to be entertained and don't get all arty and critic-like about movies. I do enjoy what you might call "fantasy" action movies - and that's what you can call SAS: Red Notice - it zips along, there's quite a lot of gory action, with some unlikely storyline twists, but hey, its entertainment - and it entertained me for a couple of hours! When it's done, forget it - its never going to be in the Oscars, but was okay . . .

Watched both series and enjoyed it . . . come in series 3
7 March 2021
Although it seems to have been panned by quite a few reviewers here, we bulk-watched both series over a couple of weeks and enjoyed it all. The bad reviews seem to all on series one, while the show is now coming up for showing series 3, so I guess that demonstrates that reviewers are often wrong! We don't watch many US series, because they tend to be very formula-written, so we don't have the same basis for comparison, of course. I thought it was interesting and entertaining, and that it moved along reasonably well, which also has the effect burying storyline glitches in the past. The acting seemed ok to me, and the characters felt reasonably believable - and the only big question I had was about the cops effectively doing what they liked . . . I thought it was worth watching.

Really enjoyable low-budget sci-fi movie
27 February 2021
A very neat little film with an interesting storyline and engaging acting and direction. Draws you in quite nicely, delivers a startling and surprising alien action sequence, and then resolves the plot in a twisty ending. Some of the minor tech issues mentioned in other reviews aren't really worth worrying too much about, watch with an eye for enjoyment and you'll be glad you did!

A decent watch
6 November 2020
I thought it was a reasonable film - not spectacular, not brilliant, but seriously worth watching to learn about a brave and unexpectedly heroic individual. Some of the story-telling was a little off the beam, some of the acting was a little odd, but overall I found it engaging an.d worth watching
