Get Out (2017)
Underdeveloped monster flick
People raved about this movie so much that we were actually really excited to see it (and I love Key & Peele, so I figured it would be creative and well executed.) But to our disappointment, this movie was awful. Overall, it was just really basic and tried to twist old horror themes into something different under the guise of something unique, while being way over-directed, forcing social themes which were largely inorganic to the plot, and presenting several holes in the overall logic of the story that made it hard to "buy in" at any point in the movie. I'd really hoped this would be a chilling thriller that would keep me on the edge of my seat, but we were barely able to finish it.
Scream (1996)
Nothing beats the original
Everyone knows this famous movie. I just loved it since the beginning! It has a very clever script, great actors specially Neve Campbell, she knew how to portray perfectly a shy girl, but I seen her in other movies as a sexy one. Every scene has its perfect moment to happen, and all the deaths were original and clever.
Relic (2020)
Grandma gone crazy again
It's a metaphor for dementia, but as a die-hard Horror fan, it's missing what I crave: unsettling atmosphere, chilling imagery, well-executed scares (if necessary to story and style), and a true sense of dread. I never felt any sense of peril and I found myself not really caring about the characters, despite how well-acted they are. If strong female performances is what you crave, go for it. But for Horror fans, I'd say skip it.
The Final Girls (2015)
Final final final girls
A fun premise... entertaining performances (in a campy way), fun and cheesy takes on '80s slasher film culture. But perhaps the biggest surprise was the mother-daughter story, which was at the heart of the whole movie and really nicely played. I was surprised to get choked up a little bit, even. Definitely not what I expected, but it gave this film some weight that made it a probably a much better film than it otherwise would have been. I enjoyed it a lot.
