The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XXXI (2020)
Great THOH!
It's been quite a long time since we've seen a Treehouse this good. They actually managed to make an entertaining, funny, and scary Treehouse for the first time in years. The first segment was the strongest, utilizing fantastic CGI visuals along with a compellingly dark story to make an excellent segment. The second segment was the weakest, but it wasn't really bad. It focuses more on interesting character designs and character voices rather then a cogent story, but it's still entertaining. The third segment is excellent. It's written very cleverly and it actually managed to catch me off guard, which is what I want out of these episodes. Very solid addition to the THOH franchise.
Family Guy: CutawayLand (2020)
An Admirable Failure
The writers certainly get credit for at least trying something different, but it never materializes into anything particularly interesting or funny. The jokes don't really land and the plot wears thin fairly quickly. Another mediocre offering, but I do encourage them to continue experimenting. This is the first time in a long time I've been excited for a Family Guy episode and even if it didn't live up to the hype, it's a start.
Family Guy: Boys & Squirrels (2020)
Poor.
Weakest of the season so far. The Peter plot was aimless. He was tall, then he didn't wanna be tall, then he wasn't. The entire Stewie/Chris plot is just a bunch of gay jokes, but at least it adheres to story structure unlike the other plot.
The Simpsons: Now Museum, Now You Don't (2020)
Bad.
After a great episode last week from Selman, Al Jean returns to the helm for an anthology with predictably disappointing results. The whole episode is a complete drag and the pacing was horrid. The segments all lacked a decisive beginning, middle, and end. The direction was fantastic and there were a few good jokes, but nothing that could save the episode.
Family Guy: The Talented Mr. Stewie (2020)
Decent.
Better than last weeks by a little bit. The pacing was erratic and the story was sloppy, but at least it was mostly harmless fun. The humor was hit and miss.
Family Guy: Stewie's First Word (2020)
Meh.
Not that good. The characterizations are decent and there are a few laughs, but nothing is really put into the story. They kinda phoned it in. I guess it's better than the aggressively awful stuff we got circa season 12, but still not ideal.
The Simpsons: I, Carumbus (2020)
Good Episode.
Very well structured with good direction and great comedic timing. Matt Selman has done it again.
The Simpsons: Undercover Burns (2020)
6/10.
This episode is ok. There's a few solid gags and the characterizations and pacing are both solid. It was kinda dull and I didn't like the bit where Fred had a mind of his own. Hopefully next week will be better, since it's a Selman episode.
