Spaceman (2024)
Tastes like home.
This movie felt like the safest hug I've ever received.
First of all, Adam Sandler really surprised me as I've only ever seen him in comedic roles. His acting was incredibly nuanced and made me feel a range of different things. I had no idea he had such serious acting chops in this regard.
The CGI and effects were incredible. Chopra made me want to fall into the sky and float through the purple clouds of energy and vibration.
Hanus? Well Hanus I don't have words for. I have never felt this way after watching a film. The sense of comfort this arachnid-like creature brought me.. as I said, words don't describe. I cried my absolute heart out at the end of this movie. Absolutely sobbed. Both at the film and the feelings it elicits emotionally and spiritually.
There are theories on whether Hanus was just a figment of Jakub's imagination, a metaphor for him facing the darkest parts of himself - but I like to think that Hanus was real. The alternative is that there was never a being from a different planet with wisdom and empathy of the ages. I find that less hard to believe, somehow. So I will believe he was real, and I will cherish his character. Funny how media can make you get so in your feels, huh?
Carnifex (2022)
I actually really loved it!
No, the special effects for the creature weren't amazing but given that it's an indie film, it was really good! Had me on the edge of my seat and I love that there wasn't some kind of random animal or demon type thing but that it was a thought extinct Australian marsupial that was the culprit. I also loved that they didn't kill the damn dog. GOOSE SURVIVES. My home girl. You deserve all the bones for taking that thing on to rescue someone you only just met. Love you forever. I loved the atmosphere of the movie as well. Yes it was a slow burn but it truly added to the ambience and isolation. All in all, this was an Australian horror I would recommend. Also loved Sisi - only ever seen her in The Vampire Academy so this was a welcome change. Didn't know she was Aussie!
Other actors were also very good. 8/10 from me!
Don't Speak (2020)
What the actual hell was this
This is literally horrible. Who decided to make this movie?? The director is so bad for this. Why is everyone continuously screaming when the monster reacts to sound? This movie makes me wanna pull my hair out. Only getting one extra star for the gore which isn't top tier, but better than anything else this movie has to offer. The mask is good but the body suit and the hands are atrocious. You can literally see the stitching in the suit. I've seen many low budget films better than this. It's just such poor execution. Honestly really not worth watching in my opinion. Glad I didn't pay for it.....
The Reef: Stalked (2022)
Just wow
I am an hour into the movie and I am so disappointed. How did this come from the success that was The Reef? Come on. That movie was so good. Had such great suspense. Pretty good acting. Wonderfully realistic shark. How did this happen with The Reef: Stalked?? If it's the same director? HOW???
Most of the acting is absolute crap, the shark looks good in some shots and then looks like a CGI sticker in others. There's always gotta be some kind of unnecessary trauma or something with a main character because they think it'll make the story better AND they have to make the shark some kind of man eating beast who can destroy boats and pontoons because somehow just being a hundred million year old apex predator who has never had to evolve but has actually had to get SMALLER isn't enough to frighten people.
Shark Bait (2022)
Seasoned Shark Movie Watcherer..er
I went into this expecting another 6 Headed Shark Attack kind of movie. You know, the kind where the shark looks like a puppet and the acting is so bad that it's genuinely laughable. I was rather surprised with Shark Bait, though.
It has many cliché tropes, and quite a lot of moments that were either predictable or made me roll my eyes. However, I don't know what it is about the movie but I did enjoy it more than most others. I have my favourites, of course, such as Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, The Meg, The Reef, 47 Metres Down: Uncaged.. this movie was unfortunately not up there with those masterpieces, however it also was not down the bottom with Sharknado, 3 Headed Shark, whatever-headed Shark, robo shark, some movie about sharks in the dirt, ghost shark (actually did enjoy that one just because of how silly it was).
The acting was not wonderful, but it was very decent for the most part. 'Tom' did not look like he was in high school at all, and I found that funny.
The shark of course stalked its prey and terrorised them on purpose which is the thing that I dislike the most, as it makes it much less.. realistic? The Reef was very realistic and I think it's because it didn't involve a man-eating, stalking, intelligent shark following people for miles and miles. Sharks are smart, but not that smart. They don't expend more energy than their prey is worth.
All in all; would I watch it again? Probably not, perhaps only with friends.
Do I recommend watching it to first time viewers? If you're a shark movie fanatic, you could do a lot worse than this one.
Baburu (2022)
What it lacks in storyline..
It does make up for in visual beauty. I got bored a lot because many things were under-explained. Much of the story needed more depth, as well as character building. The visuals were beautiful, though.
Dawn of the Beast (2021)
Went in expecting something very bad
Came out actually having enjoyed it. It has some silly tropes, such as Bigfoot fighting Wendigos; but when I think of many good iconic horror movies such as Evil Dead, they didn't follow the norm, either. I liked it. It is entertaining.
White Wolves: Ghosts of the Arctic (2017)
Don't watch if you're sensitive to graphic content.
While I appreciate that nature is nature and documentaries need to include this, some of the content in this film is extremely graphic and did not need to be put in. They did not need to include an entire clip of a wolf getting mauled by another wolf pack and being left to die gasping for air. I've been in tears half the night because of how barbaric and visceral that scene was, and I don't know if I'll ever get it out of my mind. Also when a wolf found another wolfs cubs and they included the crunching of the wolf eating its skull while killing it. This seemed too much for shock value and was NOT needed. Because of this my review is 5 stars. Otherwise would have been a great documentary. But this is not the type of thing people want to see when learning about different animals. Put bloody spoiler warnings at least, Jesus Christ.
The Diabolical (2015)
7.5
Unexpected ending, unexpected all throughout.
It's not particularly a horror, it's more of a sci-fi film under the disguise of a horror. It certainly has horror elements, but ultimately it's basis is set in science.
Would I watch again? Only if it was already on TV.
Would I recommend to a friend? Yeah, sure!
Can't Take It Back (2017)
Decent, but I wouldn't watch it again.
Seemed to have a reasonably original storyline (considering I have only heard/seen about 3 or 4 movies with the same motif.) The acting isn't *awful* but some of it could definitely be improved on. The 'demon' or whatever the hell it is relies on special technical effects as the actual makeup isn't very scary on it's own. As a woman in her mid twenties, I am not a fan of Logan Paul but his acting wasn't terrible; it was passable. Nothing special.
The lead's eyebrows did annoy the hell out of me, though. Plus all of the dumb decision making that always seems to be a common theme in any horror movie, but particularly ones that center around teenagers.
The plot started out valuably, with promise, but as the movie started progressing towards it's second and third act, it was lacking in oomf. There were a few creepy bits, one or two good jump scares, but all in all; I would not watch this again, and I probably wouldn't recommend it to a friend.
The Pool (2018)
Would have been a solid 8, but..
They killed the dog to get out. Bad writing. There were so many ways they could have gotten out and they killed the dog. Awful.
Spiral (2019)
Genuinely enjoyable.
I really liked Malik and I thought it was a brilliant movie.
The Grudge (2019)
Eh.
It's alright. Lacklustre. Doesn't hold a candle to the original series.
Paranormal Investigation (2018)
Genuinely enjoyed
No it's not original. How original can a paranormal investigation horror movie get these days? I really enjoyed the acting - it seemed quite genuine which added to the realistic aspect of it, supposedly mocking a true story. I also appreciated the different approach to possession. It wasn't a demon, but rather a Nazi war criminal's spirit. When we think about how evil and cruel a human being can become - a Nazi is definitely up there. All in all, I probably wouldn't watch it again BUT I did enjoy watching it the first time.
Black Water (2007)
Good
Genuinely a wonderfully suspenseful film. I don't know why it gets so much hate. The suspense can be boring, but it's a realistic horror film and therefor aligns well with that trope.
Black Water: Abyss (2020)
A review in one sentence.
Doesn't hold a candle to the first Black Water; take that as you will.
