Mahô Shôjo Ikusei Keikaku (2016)
Has its flaws but is still a dark, fun watch
I just wanna say that if Magical Girl Raising Project (The mobile game plot hook in the anime) was a real game I would absolutely play it.
In terms of the dark magical girl sub genre this one is fairly standard in terms of its grimdark and gore. It's right in the middle between Puella Magi and Magical Girl Site in my opinion.
It's basically a hybrid anime between your dark magical girl fare and the Hunger Games/Battle Royale, so try to not get attached to the other girls besides the obvious protags. They aren't going to make it sadly. Despite being only a one season anime, they did a pretty good job of some of the characterization so you'll feel terrible when some of them die. Others tend to have their backstories crammed in on the episodes they're slated to die in, so it wont hit as hard. Snow White, the main protag, and some of her allies (*cough* Sister Nana *cough*) can also be a bit aggravating to watch sometimes with how whiny and spoiled they act, but the other characters make up for them.
This series could have been better and I know its got flaws that keep it from being spectacular, but its honestly my favorite guilty pleasure anime.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Supper Marinara Bois the Muddy
While I don't think this movie is "bad" in any way, watching it felt like eating subpar junk food at a hit or miss ghost kitchen. The movie is stylistically very pretty and well animated, but the plot felt more like an advertising checklist rather than a story. It felt like I was mindlessly flipping through a magazine to look at the pretty pictures while I was watching this movie. The amount of pandering to Mario Bros fans by use of shoehorned in references and dead memes may also turn a lot of people off tbh. But overall, the film isn't terrible! There was clearly time and effort put into it even if the plot is a bit of a trainwreck. Plus, Jack Black is ALWAYS a treat especially in this one.
BNA (2020)
Oh my god I'm a furry aren't I
Aha ha. Character designs are 👌 very good
This anime is very brilliant in its art style and animation. There wasnt a scene I thought looked rushed out the door like in some other shows.
I also enjoyed the characters and the setting! I thought everything was pretty well explained and given enough time to actually matter. It isn't perfect, of course. Michiru in particular tends to get herself into trouble and has to constantly be rescued for the first half. And the twist feels a teensy bit rushed.
I do however put it on a watch list of "Modern day-setting with anthropomorphic animals with themes of social issues", just under Beastars and Zootopia.
Ni no kuni (2019)
Okay-enough time waster
Watched this on Netflix earlier and overall it's just kinda okay. Very very ... okay.
It is visually pretty and well done with bright colors and fluid animation overall. However it's plot sags in a bunch of places and feels rushed. Characters often come up with conclusions out of nowhere and there are moments where the characters exposit important information out of their ass that was never established anywhere in the plot.
Also of note, I watched the English dub. And it is pretty subpar tbh.
I'd put this on for your older kids as there is a bit of violence and some suggestive content (impalement, pole dancing with no nudity) but I think anyone over 14 might be left unsatisfied.
Nihon Chinbotsu 2020 (2020)
First half is awkward, but it gets slightly better
This anime has problems with its writing, character dialogue, pacing, and tone. However it does get more tolerable towards the end.
For one, the main cast of characters (the family in particular) have... interesting reactions upon witnessing their entire country literally sink. From stopping every five minutes to take pictures or going on random hiking trips for no apparent reason. It's an unusual response to have when you're in a literal crisis.
They also don't seem to process death very well. Not like they get overly dramatic and cry uncontrollably, but they barely seem to care at all. The father dies, and it seems like the family is moving on to the next stop in an hour. Everyone processes grief unnaturally, and it takes me right out of the episode when they do. For Christ's sake kid, your father is dead! The least you can do is shed a tear!
Towards the end, though, the characters start acting like humans at last. The trade off is that the animation gets a bit sloppy. Looking at a compilation of traces stock images again just... zaps me right out of the episode.
Overall it was a relatively okay anime to watch with an interesting concept and plot similar to Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 . However, the unrealistic characters and the cheap animation left me uninvested for a good portion of it.
