Last Summer (2013)
It might be a person's cup of tea but that person isn't me
This is an overly cinematic movie with very little dialogue. I've seen other reviews describe it as a visual poem and they might be right but i guess it just wasn't for me. I can see someone who has gone through the experience of having to let go of a lover because they're going to different places enjoy this or maybe someone who really likes small details and beautiful shots.
What I do wanna highlight is the nature of their relationship. It is very peculiar in that words aren't really needed most of the time. Maybe it is because of all the time they've been together but they seem to understand each other and just enjoy each other's company. There's a lot of intimacy but I wouldn't say it's overly romantic.
Overall if you're looking for a slow artistic movie with a lot of focus on details and nature this one might be for you but if you're looking for a movie with drama and/or a more developed storyline I wouldn't really recommend this one.
Esteros (2016)
Not overly dramatic but entertaining movie
I've seen other reviews and do agree that this isn't groundbreaking or filled with drama but i guess that's a virtue in itself as well. Personally i'm not always in the mood for a super feel-good movie but i'm also not always up for an emotionally shattering movie and we all know that there are an abundance of those in the queer realm. This is a pretty good in between.
Also I'm always on the lookout for stories that take place in small towns and I think there's some merit to this not only being in a small town but also being in a Latin American small town with some Brazilian influences as well given that the "rural gay" stories might be common in other places but in Latin American they are severely lacking. It brings me joy that government funding/help is being directed to these projects.
The acting I think was great and I also really enjoyed the alternating scenes between the past and the present. It really puts into context how they must be feeling in the present as adults considering the closeness of their relationship as children.
Overall I think it's a simple story but there's a charm to that simplicity and I would definitely recommend.
