Michael Clayton (2007)
Plot Holes Festival
I want to talk to you Michael Clayton: You are not a good movie. You really aren't. I wish you were but you're not. But, nevertheless, I would like you to explain me some things about your script. Yes, yes, I Know, Your Author wrote the three Bourne and they are great, but let's face it, those novels couldn't be ruined (well, maybe if Joel Schumacher...),and the directors helped a lot there. But not to loose the point, I was asking you about your script. Easy questions first: Why did you put the smart kid if you will not use it in the story? How come the police think you're dead just because you threw your wallet and watch into a burning car? Whatever happened to Anna, what is the reason for that character even existing? Arthur could have had the same stupid remorse without her, as we've seen in 1000 movies before you. If you get to answer this ones, then please tell me what kind of lawyer are you. You seemed pretty expendable, being your main purpose to guard a crazy-genius lawyer and organizing his funeral. Yeah, Michael should have stayed as a prosecutor. A final question. Arthur was a genius and managed to get all those documents ( we never find out how) But he didn't think they would kill him- obviously he was to busy as to watch any lawyer movie around-, so, instead of giving a copy to every newspaper, he calls his own office and reads the memo? Oh, right, he was getting the copies with the red cover, silly me. Well, on the bright side, your direction in better than your script, and great actors -Clooney, Swinton and Wilkinson- do the best they can and manage to make the movie at least not a complete waste of film. Hopefully you won't get a second part Best Wishes Tony
In the Land of Women (2007)
Just Brody and Dukakis
Let set the record straight. It's not that this movie sucks, because it does not. It's just disappointing because it could have been really good. In fact, the first half hour IS good. Giving that the storyline it's kind of a cliché- guy in his twenties gets dump for beautiful girl, and heartbroken decides to travel only to find the truth about himself- they managed to tell it interestingly enough. That is, it went really well mainly thanks to Adam Brody, an actor who plays the same character once and again -gilmore girls, OC, Mr and Ms Smith- but always adding some tiny specifics to the persona as to make it look refreshing. It's also a merit to his record being able to play a sad face when he's hearing Elena Anaya speak in English. The first 5 minutes of him against Olimpia Dukakis are arguably the best moment of the flick. This fantastic Oscar winner plays and elderly and kind of crazy grandma, obsessed, against medical opinion, with the imminence of her death. She is fantastic in this role, and deserved a new nomination -only a Utopia if you see the numbers this movie made worldwide-. The movie keeps in a good track until he meets the neighbors. And then's when the movie starts to fall. First, because of Meg Ryan. His new "Joker-like" face makes her unable to express any kind of feeling other than surprise. And taking into account that she is a cancer patient with a husband who cheats on her and a daughter who hates her, she kind of needs to show some sadness. To bad for her, she could have been a beautiful aging woman, but she preferred to be a clown. From the moments he meets the family across the street ,the movie tries to tell us that he is discovering he was not doing things right with his life but cannot either scape to solve the problems, and that nobody's life is simple. But it fails, not only because meg Ryan fails, but also because some of the problems told are so trivial- mother daughter fight, for example- that you don't really get the metaphor. In fact, you end up thinking, wow, this people would's survive my third world country kind of problems. Anyway, Adam Brody made me laugh, he plays a lovable character, and his relationship with grandma is worth watching, sadly, there's to much of stupid teenage problems and to little of that story. I wouldn't recommend it, but neither would repulse it.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
"Really, pneumonia? That's an interesting way to die"
I need to tell something, it's kind of a confession. Last week I was looking at my IMDb film history and as I realized that 7 out of ten movies that I been watching were from the US, I decided i would't rent any more American movies from a month. Thank god I didn't keep my promise!. This movie is fantastic in many levels. The scrip is a filled with black humor, drama, romance, full-colored characters. It's an impossible story, and yet it seems as it could happen. The people in it is very real. You get to love this characters, you want them to live a good life. It tells such a complete story that you feel as if you've read the book that's been being written in front of us. What can I say about the actors? Will Ferrel is the main reason why I watched this movie. I was sure he would suck. I'm an idiot. He gave so many interesting things to Harold Crick. he is a totally believable shy guy, not the stupid person that movies usually show us as a shy guy. He lives a boring life, yet he is not boring, he is funny, and sweet and real. Emma Thompson is one of the greater living actress in the world. And I thing this is one of her best works. She is living her book, suffering, trying to kill smartly, and that seems hard. Dustin Hoffman also seems to be Tailor made to play the professor. The scrip provides some of the more real and profound characters I didn't like the previous Marc Foster movie, but hats off, he can tell a bittersweet story in a subtle way, using some original techniques, but all in favor of the story, and not to show the viewer that he is a great director. He prove me wrong, let's hope he keeps the good work American cinema has seen in a long time, and probe me that i have to continue criticizing USA cinema, so that once in a while I get to see one of this gems.
El camino de San Diego (2006)
Road Movie at it best
OK, it's not a surprise that Sorin did it again. He is without any doubt one of the top three living directors from Argentina, an the only one who passes the borders of our country without any type of presumption and grandiloquence in his features. Particularly in this movie, "El Camino de San Diego", -the title referring to Argentina biggest living Icon, Diego Armando Maradona- SOrin shows as that a fantastic road movie, which includes all the components of this genre, can be done in this part of the world, and with the surprising fact of the main character not driving a single kilometer. We get to see two main thing in this movie. First of all, a unique love story. That is, the one which exits between Argentines and the football idol. A love thats surpasses any distance, monetary limitation and even the reality. The main character is up to everything in order to achieve his wish. That is, to give Diego a piece of wood with his face on it. The second main point of this movie, and here we enter SOrin's favorite field, is the accurate picture of the Argentina's country and town inhabitants, all of them trying to help the story hero so that he can achieve his goal. Again, an in Historias Minimas and Bombón, Sorin gets fantastic performances from non-professional actors. Not to extend it any longer, I can Farly say that this is the best picture about Maradona, and it doesn't even has to show him on screen
Crónica de una fuga (2006)
Argentina will get it's second Oscar
Yes, this time we can be sure. This movie will bring home the first award since "la historia Oficial". But the great thing about this movie is that it does not need any award to prove how great it is. When you have some great performances, specially from the best south-American actor of his generation, Rodrigo de la Serna (Diarios de Motocicleta), and a director who has achieved his most mature work, and all of this to tell a story so sad, deep, breathtaking and energetic, you can't go wrong. I was lucky enough as to see this film on a preview, so this is the first vote it receives at the IMDb. But believe me, this movie has future of top 250. Not that it needs it, anyway. Finally, if you are from Argentina, and you think that we have had enough with this type of stories, think of all the missing tales similar to this one, that we'll never know of. They are at least 30.000. So we need to continue filming and writing about the seventies, until one day we'll be able to say. "This won't happen again"
