Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Loved it!
Great movie, with the classic long buildup towards some action. The cinema was applauding and cheering during the action scene, the mood was incredible. Well done. Might get some hate for this but for me personally it's on par with pulp fiction and death proof.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Absolutely brilliant.
Saw it in cinema twice. Have nothing bad to say about it. I knew Bong-Joon Ho from Okja, which was a decent movie but not very special. So when it came out at a film festival I decided to go see it and I wasn't disappointed.
Better Call Saul (2015)
At first I was skeptical as it was just going to be another "spinoff" series. Boy was I wrong.
I didn't know what to expect when news came out of this series. I loved Breaking Bad but I was skeptical. Still I gave the pilot a watch and immediately got hooked.
The show stands really well on its own and all the characters are written so brilliantly, especially Kim and Saul. I feel like the writers, producers etc. really got a lot of experience from making Breaking Bad and worked out all the kinks in their process to create this masterpiece. Especially season 5, it kept me on the edge of my seat and I can't wait for season 6. Bravo!
The OA (2016)
I really hope season 3 will get made.
This show really deserves continuation. Brilliant storyline and characters, have never seen anything like it.
Dark (2017)
One of my favourite shows. Two minor negatives, but overall I think this is one of the best shows that was released lately. [Careful, some spoilers]
This show had me hooked from the beginning. The characters, the story, the cinematography, the soundtrack, everything is close to perfection with the exception of some small details. The atmosphere is gripping and Ben Frost did a phenomenal job on this absolute masterpiece of a soundtrack. Just listening to the soundtrack alone gives me chills. The use of the German language is really beautiful and I really hope that people watch it the way it is intended (German audio, subtitles in their own language if needed). There is nothing I can quite compare it with and that's why I love it (please don't even suggest Stranger Things, just no. It's not about time travel, Dark is not set just in the 80's and it's not about weird monsters). People seem to give this show a perfect rating and while I get that it's a fantastic show, I wouldn't rate it a 10/10.
The connections between all the characters are structured well and if you pay attention, you can understand them, that is until season 3 begins. Here it becomes crazy convoluted. I like this, the show really forces you to pay attention and to rewatch it. However at some moments the show feels a little overconvoluted for the sake of convoluting it to appear "deep", I especially felt this in season 3. Then again, maybe the point being made here is that time travel results in so many complex problems that it's best to not time travel at all. Who's to say.
I do like the way the writers chose to end the show and that the show has come to a stop and doesn't just get extended to no end with just disappointing seasons. The choice of that "what a wonderful world" cover in the end of season 3 was a bit weird and didn't sit right with me, but that would be the only negative thing I had to say about the choice of soundtrack which was perfect for other parts. Some of my favourite parts of the already existing songs in the soundtrack were "My body is a cage", "Familiar", "Partita for 8 voices: No. 3, Courante". The latter an initially very weird and intriguing piece of music but it fits the show so well.
My favourite characters in this show were of course Jonas and Martha, then Ulrich and Claudia. The actress Lisa Vicari did a really great job at portraying Martha, she's a great actress but sadly the movies she played in so far were not really great and kind of kitschy. Ulrich is by far the most tragic character and even though he is a cheating lover in about every timeline I feel like he doesn't deserve this. Claudia is just a brilliant character with so much depth, driven to end Adam's plan. Her stressful job, her having accidentally killed her own father and seeing her own daughter die of cancer I feel have really made her bitter and determined.
Finally another tiny little negative point: the CGI of the machines and the black sphere over the town does not quite feel that good, but this is not that big an issue for me. I always feel like if a show/movie uses CGI that it has to be perfect and otherwise they shouldn't use it at all. In this case the CGI was definitely needed so they couldn't have done it without, but it could have been better.
All in all a really great show and I wish I could forget it and rewatch it.
Biohackers (2020)
Not bad, not great either.
I enjoyed the show, binged it in a day. It's not bad, but also really not great. The show starts off kind of slow and almost had me losing interest but suddenly it sped up really rapidly and it made me want to watch the next episodes. It's pretty fast-paced and I do like the structured way in which they explain Mia's back story step by step. So even though I'm ranting a bit in the next paragraph, I would still watch season 2.
First, I found it kind of weird that Mia, who seems to be an undergrad (just starting out in uni), within the span of days to a week or so gets to work with the insanely tenured and successful Lorenz and gets do do all sorts of high-level lab work for her, she moved into Lorenz's inner circle really quickly. I get that she may be a smart student but come on. This is not at all how universities work.
Then there is the cliché of the two over-the-top nerdy roommates and the one hot-but-not-so-smart roommate. And of course it just so happens that they all have exactly the skills and money that she needs to solve her problems later on. They also seem to be immediately on board with her crazy plan while being portrayed on the news as a terrorist. Not so sure everyone would just happily join in with someone like that.
Then the stereotype of the brilliant young evil entrepreneur lady with the big house and the nice car.
And finally... That love affair with both Jasper and Niklas. Why, just why. It feels added just for the sake of "complicating" the plot a little bit.
The ending feels like a slightly forced plot-twist. I'm not sure how to feel about it, I didn't expect that journalist guy to be evil at all, but oh well. Let's see if there is some actual depth to that twist in season 2.
PS I see some other reviews comparing this show to Dark. There are in my opinion zero parallels to be drawn here, and Dark is definitely on another level.
