I really enjoyed this, yes, it does have ups and downs--sometimes it seems that all is not going well but that is part of the fun! It reminds me a bit of "The Ref"---could some of the same people be involved {behind the scenes}? It concerns a modern, up to date family, who feel that they would like to get more out of their Christmas celebration with a little less work, but they are very short of free time.

I hope to get a copy of it so I an play it whenever I want to! I think it is a lot of fun but be sure to watch it all the way to the end,I think you who commented that you found it "depressing" quit too soon.

I am eager to see it again, and am recommending it to all my friends.

I saw this movie in the theatre in 1942-43 and I really hated it, of course I was only a kid myself! I have avoided it all these years until tonight when I saw it on TCM. It really is a pretty good movie. I have seen Margaret O'Brien in many other things and she really was a pretty good actress. I mentioned seeing it to my adult daughter and gave her the story line. When I mentioned the flight to Portugal as the first lap in the flight to the US, she insisted that it wasn't so. I replied well, that was what they did in "Casablanca" and she retorted that "Casablanca" was in Africa. Well, since I was only 12 years old at the time I really don't know--I just presumed that it was because of the war.

I just now saw this movie on television for the first time. Somehow I missed it in 1966. I have always been interested in "Chinese Gorden" and they seemed to do his character quite well, though somehow I thought he was a "Teatotaler"! What surprised me about the movie was the flat out way it was admitted that his government abandoned him, expected him to do the job with no support, only caring that "people in the street" didn't know what they had done. In 1966, we didn't yet know that governments did such naughty things. In those days we still believed that the government was still the "good guy". That people liked the movie in spite of that amazes me----5 or 10 years later it would have been a "given".

When I was a kid I saw this film at the Saturday Afternoon Matinée. It was meant to be an exciting , interesting film---not to teach us US history. When this film was released, there were people still living from the time period covered in the movie. My granddad was a small boy when the news came from Little Bighorn. { spoiler?} Most of those people remembered Custer as a dashing Civil War Hero, killed in an Indian massacre. Remember, people of that generation tended to believe "that the only good Indian was a dead one". It wasn't until the 1970 , if I recall correctly, that a TV production portrayed Custer as a crazy madman and some other nasty things too.

Somehow I missed this when it was showing in the theaters---I was home with a new baby. So this afternoon many, many years later I saw it on TV for the first time. A lot of people love it and while I have always loved both "der Bingle" and Danny Kaye--I didn't feel they worked too well together. To me, the movie seemed an attempt to capitalize on the success of the song, "White Christmas", written for "Holiday Inn" { I'd like to see that again} I felt that Irving Berlin was rather "off his game"------the only really big song is White Christmas and it wasn't written for this movie. Of all the songs in the movie, only 2 of them "Count your Blessings" and "Sisters" I could even dimly recall! I guess you can't please everyone. Perhaps my problem is that I don't have any happy memories connected with it.
