Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel (2018)
Pretty spooky
This is a pretty good follow up. It's perfect to turn the lights out, throw and bag of popcorn in the microwave, and spend 90 min being chased around a haunted house. Good work
Rabu & Pîsu (2015)
Sion Sono's Versatility on Display!
Caught "Love and Peace" at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival as a double bill with his new "Tag", and what really clobbered everyone over the head was how versatile Sion Sono is. From surreal guts and gore in "Tag" to "Love and Peace", a heartwarming fantasy flick that really is fit for the entire family. The entire film feels like a labour of love, as if Sono is – working within a constrained budget – using everything he's got, every trick of the trade, to maximize what he's working with. I looked over a few times and the entire audience had big bubbly smiles from the first frame to the credits. And that's no small feat in a theatre full of jaded horror fanatics. Highly recommended for, well, everyone, old and young!
Jurassic World (2015)
Truly an awful movie, even for people who like bad movies.
This is truly an awful movie, even for people who like bad movies. If you liked this, and you're not an 8 year old boy, you need to seriously step back and take a deep breath: The script is horrific, the special effects (even in glorious IMAX) look like CGI from 1995, it is basically a 2 hour commercial full of product placement which is distracting in the extreme, and it does absolutely nothing new for the Jurassic Park franchise. But the worst part of Jurassic World is the painfully bad and cliché acting. You will like this movie if enjoy wooden performances, kids struggling to cry about their parent's divorce, and forced Summer Blockbuster love interests. You will also like this movie if you enjoy watching whiny kids roll around in a glass ball complaining about their parents' divorce. At a time when Max Max: Fury Road is showing us what is still possible for Action movies, Jurassic World is truly a trip back in time, giving us a glimpse of the worst aspects of Hollywood Blockbusters. Skip it.
It Follows (2014)
What modern horror has always been about!
Caught 'It Follows' at TIFF Midnight Madness and it was a real treat. Not only is it a creative take on what has become a 'by the book' teen horror genre, but there are some legitimately creepy and tense scenes. But perhaps the most interesting aspect of 'It Follows' is that it is set in a timeless time, and feels closer to a fairy tale than anything else. We find cell phones mingling with black and white TVs, and there isn't a parental figure to be found when the going gets rough. This is a particularly clever move when the 'entity' in the film is also something we know nothing about, and potentially timeless! Most importantly, so much horror, particularly modern horror, is obsessed with sex. 'It Follows' plays on this concept with much success.
