Bad without Jon
1 May 2024
I am a HUGE fan of the show. I've seen every episode but JON is the show. Yes, he's abrasive but he cares. With the insults comes rewards if he thinks the owners are truly vested in their business. The replacements have fallen flat and just aren't interesting. I don't know why he stepped back but it's floundering without him. It isn't just the hosts. The chefs and mixologists lack the spark from previous seasons. Having Jon set up each episode and do a conclusion is better than nothing but it still falls flat. I don't see the same level of passion and concern from previous seasons. Don't think I will watch much longer.

What? Was I watching the same series?
20 April 2024
I watch a lot of foreign television, and in particular, Scandinavian crime dramas. This was not a 10 for me. Numerous other series have been, but this continually fell apart. It starts off with an excellent premise. A girl murdered in an election campaign car. Is it tied to her life or the campaign or her family or is it random? The intrigue was that it had the possibility of going anywhere. Now to the problems.

The lead detective is about to move but continually seems to get sucked back in to this case. Her family is left in the cold. Is she afraid of losing the job in Sweden so she can't walk out of the job in Denmark? She can't possibly be the only cop in all in all of Denmark that can work on this case. Then there is her constantly chomping on a great big wad of gum. It is so distracting and disgusting and it makes her hard to understand. Then the entire series just starts going off in all kinds of crazy directions. I won't make it to season two or three. I'm done.

I will never gain back my time
6 April 2024
This was AWFUL. I regrettably watched all 6 episodes for which I will never regain that wasted time. Save yourself This was almost like a bad French version of saw. I kept hoping that I wouldn't regret spending my precious weekend on this. Oh how wrong I was. This wasn't just bad, corrupt cops, it was despicable characters with little redeeming value. If this is what the French police force is like, I'm so glad I don't live there. This was definitely not a "move to France and have a new and better life." I've always been fascinated by the Paris catacombs but this was Silence of the Lambs on Steroids. Run away.

Dated.
3 April 2024
I don't understand the glowing reviews. This is very dated and the plot is just a contrived mess. No one wants his help. He is simply the ugly American, making a big to do out of nothing. Everybody's happy without him and no one needs him. He thinks that his money, and the American way of life will solve everything. This was also very miscast. Gable is charming on his own, but with Sophia Loren, it just comes across as icky. There is no chemistry. He is three times her age. I can understand him, wanting to help his nephew, but throughout the movie it seems more like busybody interference. I hear this was one of his last movies and this seems like a sad way to go out.

Depressed? Watch this.
3 April 2024
If you think your life is boring, and you are sad and depressed, watch this, and you will be grateful for every second of your life. This is one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. Five single women whose lives are going nowhere. There are no men for them. There are no jobs for them. They live isolated in the Irish countryside. Their lives then become even worse when their senile brother comes home and joins them. They are all stuck in the ancient past. Kate is beyond judgmental. It is understanding why her school numbers are declining and why she lost her job. With a factory moving into the area, the cottage industry, that employs these women, will end. Yes, there are some pretty pictures of the countryside, but it is not enough to save this movie.

Worst of the 3
2 March 2024
I have seen the UK version. I have seen both seasons of the US version. I have seen the Australian version. This is the worst of the three. I enjoy a good game with great competition. The Australian version was filled with nasty people that I could not wait to see killed. It got to the point where I just could not watch another episode. The contestants were so unlikable that I didn't want any of them to win. For both the US and the UK versions, I was glued till the end and rooting for either traders or faithfuls to win. For this series, I frankly wanted all of them to die, except for maybe the man who had been captive. I gave up watching before I ever got to the end. Who won? Oh wait, I don't really care.

Horrible last season
23 February 2024
LOVED this until the final season. In many ways, the professor was a more quirky German version of Monk. As someone with ASD and PTSD, I could sympathize with many of his struggles. There were those who loved him and supported him, those who tolerated him, those who respected him, and those whom he annoyed beyond all belief. I realize that shows have to kill off characters for a variety of reasons. I won't be a spoiler and say who they are here. I also know that some shows need a definitive way to end a series. There are classic good ways of doing this like MASH and terrible ways like Seinfeld but this was the WORST EVER. After the final episode, I regret ever watching the show.

She had the right idea
1 January 2024
In the beginning, the lawyer wife has divorce papers for her immature, flighty, failure to launch husband. She should have filed them. Why would a successful woman tolerate this incredibly immature man? The series had potential. This could have been a moderate interpretation of Moonlighting. A successful woman is partnered with a flighty private investigator. But, unfortunately, this is just another bad Hallmark movie, which they seem to turn out in great numbers. I occasionally tune to the channel, hoping to see something mildly good, but then I am usually disappointed. I guess you could call this mildly entertaining and watchable if you have absolutely nothing better to do with your time.

A Biltmore Christmas (2023 TV Movie)

The best Hallmark movie ever? NOT
26 December 2023
I have tried and tried to like this movie. I read the reviews praising it. Review after review said this was the best Hallmark movie ever. Some said it was so good because it was so different from previous Hallmark movies. That's true it is different. It stinks. This is the most improbable movie and I'm not talking about the time travel. Who drops the one thing that controls time travel? The money she found in the purse can't possibly pay for everything she has spent. She suddenly wears outfits that just materialize out of nowhere. And she didn't get them from wardrobe. The acting is stilted and awful in both time zones. I thought the modern day, Biltmore had bad acting with her sidekick and the manager, but then she went back in time and the bad acting continued. I have watched many Hallmark movies multiple times, but this is definitely a one off.

Season 2 needed better editing
21 November 2023
I thoroughly enjoyed the first season. Yes it is gritty and violent and the main character is flawed. That seems to be typical for many British crime series. I enjoyed the serial killer plot of season one but confess that season two has been difficult to follow. It seems to jump around quite a bit, and it can take quite some time before a scene ties to anything else. Other scenes seem to be so random. I have waited and waited for how they connect to the plot or anything that is happening and it just doesn't seem to be occurring. At first, I thought it was trying to show or reflect the character's flaws but now I don't think so. I think it needed a much better editor and a lot needed to be left on the floor of the editing room. I have found season two to be a disappointment.

Wilder (2017– )

1 & 3 are awesome, not 2
11 April 2023
The first season had me hooked. It was a decades, old mystery, combined with modern murder and disappearances. Many people were not who they seemed to be. Small towns have a lot of dark secrets. As much as season one grabbed me, season two turned me off. They decided to do the whole drug angle and blaming it on the foreigners with more big city interaction at a drug squad. This plot has been done to death on show after show after show. The Muslim culture was a part of season one but it is the focus in season two. There are all the traditional conflicts about women wearing scarves and dressing appropriately and men being traditional men. Again these topics have been done to death. Season three finally got back to what season one was. Wilder is once again investigating murder and mystery in a small, remote town. This is where the series shines. Not many people know what life is like in a remote, Swiss village, and have not traditionally seen it on the screen. Season two was so bad I actually fast forwarded through most of it so don't give up it does get better once again with season three.

Heartwarming?
25 February 2023
It was good. I don't know if I would call this heartwarming or the best picture of the year. It did not even get close to that until the end. This was the sad story of a child with parents so self-absorbed and self-centered that their behavior was actually abusive. It was difficult to watch the closed, narrow life of a small town. The heartwarming happy aspect was that she escaped in the end. Even the music teacher who seemed to be giving of his time and interest wasn't. He never asked about her life. He didn't understand that most of her life was not her life and was completely out of her control. He was judgmental instead.

Wasted my *#??<# time
31 January 2023
I absolutely loved the series. I watched all of season one and almost all of season two and then decided to search for a release date for season three only to discover that it had been *<~??<£>> canceled. Canceled on a cliffhanger with no resolution. Why do streaming series do this? I am not a big fan of Amazon's original shows. This is one of the few that I actually decided to spend my time on only to find out that it had all been wasted because there is no ending. This kind of attitude which is becoming more and more prevalent on streaming venues is causing me to cancel them one by one. The attitude disgusts me. Spoiler? Or no because there isn't an ending.

Good until it wasn't
22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was hooked for the first season. Yes, I had the bad guy figured out long before the ending. Nazi hunters were common thread in America for many years, many were arrested and deported and put on trial. This took all of that and fictionalized it and made it interesting. I was completely hooked for the first season. I could not wait for the second season to start. I'll admit I had my doubts because the bad guy had died so who was going to become the new bad guy? This was where it fell apart. The second season became alternative history. The hunt for Hitler was mildly interesting but over the top. When they got to the alternate history of the trial, they completely lost me. It just went in to comic fantasy. I will not be watching a third season if there is one.

Fizzled out.
31 December 2022
I did not watch this when it came out, unlike most other people. I waited to watch seasons one through four together, before the arrival of season five. The first season was charming. As a period piece, the costumes and interiors were delightful. I enjoyed watching a 1950s housewife become transformed but all of this quickly fizzled out. By season two, I found her to be self-absorbed, narcissistic, and a neglectful, toxic mother. She clearly should never have had children since she expects other people to raise them. The writer seems to have an issue with these types of women. Gilmore girls started out delightful and then got worse with every season. As I have watched this show, the same is true. In season two, I found myself occasionally fast forwarding. This became a more common occurrence in three and the norm in season four. I will not be watching a season five because I fear it might be like the Gilmore girls final. Why does everything the writer writes end up being the same?

Missing Jean Shepherd
23 December 2022
I first encountered the humor of Jean Shepherd and the "Parker" family in his book in God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash. What I loved about the original, is exactly what many people hate it - Shepherd's narration. If you take his voice out of the original movie, it's cute but doesn't really hold together. No matter how hard they tried to make this sequel work, they didn't have Jean Shepherd. And of course, the old man had died, as a character and as an actor. Ralphie was cute in the original but oh how I loved the adults - mom, dad, the teacher and of course the 1940s setting. Yes it was my childhood on the screen and somehow the sequel just doesn't pull it off.

Awful!!!!!! Not watching season 5
19 December 2022
Like every other user reviewer here, this episode disgusted me. I've been a loyal fan for four years but I have absolutely no interest in season five. This was the worst way to end a show that I've ever seen. This was worse than Lost. Who came up with this garbage? One really can't disclose spoilers because there aren't any. No one knows what the hell happened. This was not a way to treat fans. Did the writers decided they wanted to do some fantasy? Is this an unconscious dream? Are they all really just in hell or Purgatory? What any of this season real? Do any of these characters or the writers not suck? Other reviewers want a fifth season to have their questions answered. Not me. I'm so done. Disgusted.

Spiraled down till the end
15 December 2022
I liked the first season. I found the issues and struggles of undocumented persons and their children fascinating and outraging. I sympathized with Thony and her son's plight. It worked for the first season but they needed a different storyline for the second season. During the second season, it just became overused and unrealistic. The only likable characters are the children. All the adults, on both sides of the law, the medical profession, law-enforcement, the everyday person on the street, etc. Are completely unlikable. Thony became so manipulative to the point that I thought her dying would actually be helpful to her child. If there is a third season, I will not be watching. Season two finished this show for me. Update- upon learning of the lead actor's death, I gave it one more chance. Nope. Her arrogance hurts or kills everyone around her. So done. Some series just don't know when to end.

Boring and big smoking commercial
7 December 2022
Oh I don't understand the excellent reviews but to each their own. The scenery is beautiful and that's about all this has going for it. It is so boring. The lead character smokes cigarettes almost nonstop from beginning to end. The acting is so so. This is one of those junk shows produced for acorn TV. I guess it fills up some of their space but don't really have very much going for it. She's offered a job and then the specifics of the job change after she's taken it. Why would anyone trust such a disreputable company to keep their word about anything? The only reason she stayed herself was because of greed. This should be a pass for most people.

Slow and bad reviews for Irish police
4 December 2022
At first, I thought it was me. I watch a lot of British shows and they are usually slower then those from America but this was like watching paint dry. The acting was good but this was so slow. It could've been condensed into far fewer episodes and lost absolutely none of the plot. And yes refugee life everywhere is depressing but what was worse was the police. If this is typical of Irish police, I am surprised that any crimes are ever solved by such an inept and dull force. They are rude, sexist, racist, I don't seem to spend forever to figure out anything. Guess I'll never be moving to Ireland.

Love triangle? Who would want her?
27 November 2022
I get the murder mystery concept. The murders here are interesting but not really gruesome. There are some good plot twists but they are basic who done its. What I don't understand is the love triangle. The wife is completely and totally unlikable as a character. I don't understand why anyone would fight over her. She's selfish. She wears horrible one piece jumpers that are not required for the job. Her hairstyles are awful. She knew what she was getting when she married the guy. She's having a midlife crisis, thinking that her life is unfulfilled and she wants to be 20 again. That's the basis of all of this? She feels robbed of the life she should have had? All she sees is the negative and none of the positive. I kept watching episode after episode hoping she would change. I really just wanted to have her end up alone and even more miserable while hubby goes to the disco and has fun with a really nice woman.

Intense psychological study
18 November 2022
This is sad. Two people, both likely on the autism spectrum. One is the victim and one is the perpetrator. Neither were understood by their families or society. Both were pushed to desperate measures. One is to self harm and the other to harm others. Their traits do not excuse their behavior but one does wonder how different the outcome might have been with the right help and understanding early on.

Most mysteries don't focus so much on the psychology of both victim and perpetrator. How did they both end up there?

The series also looks at everyday lives of other characters who also feel trapped by a pregnancy, elderly parent, social status, mental disability, etc.

Overall this series is rare.

Don't get the glowing reviews
15 November 2022
Firstly, our lead character/amateur detective is incredible annoying. Does she have any character traits that are likeable? I started to wonder if she was on the Spectrum. I realize that this is set in a small town but can people just leave all these places unlocked and uninhabited? Why does the main character just assume she can move into her grandmother's house? Why is it still full of everything including clothes and food and has power? Why would I nice holiday camper be unlocked and also unused, both in winter and summer? Have these people not heard of Airbnb? Why would you not sell or rent these places?

On to a lot of the acting and editing. I have seen way better. The main character is too stiff. I get that coming back to your traumatic home town is a bummer but still.

Who walks into a B and E with no help, weapon, etc?

This looks more like one of those awful foreign Netflix series (I watched it on Acorn). I guess if you're really bored and don't mind subtitles this might be for you.

A Freeling novel!
3 November 2022
I have long been a fan of this series. Hetty is a more modern Miss Marple. She uses her ordinariness to solve crimes. No one suspects the charming senior housewife. Several years after seeing this episode, I was reading a novel by Nicolas Frieling. Of course his detective is male and lives in Holland. So as I read my way through his novel Double-Barrel, I realize that the plot seemed terribly familiar. Someone in a remote area of Holland is writing poison pen letter's which are having a rather disastrous effect upon a small community. Our hero is assigned to discover who is writing these and put an end to it. He goes undercover. If you have seen this episode of Hetty, You will realize that it is the same as the Freeling novel. I think Freeling did it better but I have found no record of him getting credit for the Hetty episode.

Confusing
15 September 2022
I found this confusing as hell. Where did the family originally live? That was never established. Where was the father a POW? Never established. He is traveling from somewhere (never established) to Missouri. I did not realize that Missouri after the Civil War was still considered hostile Indian territory. It was civilized and a heavily battled over during the Civil War itself so from where have the sudden hostile tribes originated? It was all filmed in Colorado. This is why it didn't look like Missouri. I couldn't figure out where the mountains were coming from or what an earth was happening. This movie had so much potential. It was like it picked up halfway into the story but never explained what happened in the previous part. There have been a lot of orphan train books and movies and most are far better than this. I found this to be a great disappointment.
