Low-ish quality, uninspired
2 December 2022
This movie feels almost like a Hallmark movie than a real feature film. That is, cheaply and quickly made uninspired, with actors that look like models, but can barely project their voice. I say almost because the actor were not totally terrible. Maybe they were not too much into their characters, but in other movies from the same actors they performed fine.

The story is built around of what if thing have turned the other way throw an injunction in life. It follow two parallel stories in parallel universes.

The idea of two split stories, caused by some minor issue is not new, and does not contribute here to any engaging story.

Wacky, too wacky
29 November 2022
The main point of the story, that is, the hypothetical existence of multiple universes with all the lives you could have lived and being able to jump from one to the other, might be the basis for a good story. However, they decided to make a 100% wacky movie, with loads of visual effects, totally implausible endless kung-fu fighting, and very very little story. The sub-plots get also lost here: the gay daughter coming out of the closet to her conservative grandpa, the immigrant Chinese family, who had to adapt to the US and is struggling with the IRS. There's stuff here to tell a real story, and no need to flashy visual effects.

Add to this dubious production choices. Both main characters are portrayed by actors who are Cantonese speakers, but in the movie they are depicted talking in Mandarin to each other and in Cantonese to the grandpa. This won't impact English speaking viewers, but it only makes sense to add more confusion to the Chinese audience.

Nothing special
16 November 2022
There's no way this movie is a 7.8 rating. I have to admit it has its funny moments, its quirk characters and decent acting. But 7-8 ratings are for masterpieces, for movies that you would not forget in some time and even would like to rewatch at a later time.

The story is insipid and predictable. You might empathize with the predicament of the the characters and wish them the best. You might find the NZ expressions funny, but that's all. Nothing special about it.

Some violence against animals is depicted. I suppose no animal was harmed in real life, but even then, some people might find this objectable.

Not innovative, but no horrible, it depends on your expectations
11 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is what it appears to be: a formulaic rom-com with a basic simple mensage (or messages):

If you want something you'll get it. Just keep working hard.

If you had placed a daughter into adoption you'll find her.

You'll also find love and prove what you are worth, independent of your upbringing or college education. Your street smarts are worth something, you'll see.

And silly managers, who are obsessed with degrees, will have to recognize your talent.

That's probably what people want to hear or see. Reality is much more dull than that.

Nothing spectacular: Jennifer Lopez, as a 50-ish actress is kind casted as a 40-ish mom, which is kind of forced, but not totally out of place.

Vanessa Hudgens seems to be OK-ish as an actress.

Not really about Joseph Campbell, but interesting
13 October 2022
If you want to know about Campbell's work you'll need to look elsewhere.

Some basic aspect it are mentioned, however, as many have noticed, it's not really about him, neither about his biography nor his works about mythology. His fictional works are not even mentioned.

It's more about how Campbell's insights inspired a series of people (whom you might like or not) in their lives and work. And it's also about how narratives can impact how we view our life and change our attitude to it.

The documentary is well crafted and knows how to keep the viewer interested. It's basically a mixture of imagery, interviews and little performances by children intermingled.

If Hallmark decided to make action/thriller movies
29 September 2022
If Hallmark decided to make action/thriller movies: It would look better than this.

I found the poor sound quality very annoying from the first sentences on. It obviously didn't get better. Maybe if I had watched the movie with headphones I would get a better audio, but as it was, it was a complete turn off.

The cinematography was really weak too. Add to it poor scenery.

The story was not even slightly interesting plus meaningless dialogues on top. You'll spend the whole story screaming at the movie about how no adult would talk or act like that.

All in all a waste of time. I didn't have high expectations, but I think you can create a better movie than this with little resources.

Tiresome inaccurate movie
12 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The style of this movie, with the character hearing her internal voices through all the story and handwritten notes being projected on the screen all the time, leaves you tired and bored. It's difficult to pay attention to the actors or anything else. This could have been a fine add-on to tell a more compelling story, but they have overdone this.

Add to it that a clear burnout case (like the main character's) does not get cured miraculously just after she decides to take control of her life and finds love. No, I'm afraid one will have to work harder on any psychology issues to get better. Movies are rarely the best source for psychological advice and this is not an exception.

Silly story+dialogues, rest was cool
24 August 2022
It's not worth commenting about how implausible, silly and how little thought they put on dialogues, story line and character development. Those were really weak points, even made-for-TV movies would be better than this.

On the brighter side, the aesthetics, actors, cinematography were 1st class. It's a pity they were wasted in such a bad movie.

They tried
17 July 2022
They tried really hard to make a movie that looks mysterious and psychedelic. They ended with an empty shell without a story. Avoid, even if you are bored.

Oh boy, this was a bad movie.
1 May 2022
I'd need to think about any part of it that I liked. You might find Eva Longoria attractive, you might like the basic idea (to disconnect from modern digital life), but there's nothing else.

The whole plot is simply silly. It's as if some kids made a movie about adults, and didn't know anything about.

Weak movie, I was disappointed
25 April 2022
The story, based on real events, was kind of interesting, but the movie was badly executed. There was not enough stuff for a feature movie. Director should have filmed a short.

And -1 for ridiculously fake snow.

A one-actor movie that didn't work out
16 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you are planning to watch this, I hope you are a huge Naomi Watts fan, because this is the only thing you'll get. It's all about here running (or trying to) and talking on the phone.

It's difficult to write a compelling movie when you rely the whole story in just one actor. Although there are other characters, we experience them basically through their voices.

Chris Sparling is the writer of this one and of Buried (2010). (I don't know if he's planning to specialize on one-man movies). Somehow something got screwed in this one. Buried was able to capture the attention of the audience. This one not so much.

Weak
23 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you like Mads Mikkelsen, you might enjoy some parts of the movie, because that's (almost) all you'll get.

This (almost) single actor movie has (almost) no dialogue.

It strongly resembles All is Lost with Robert Redford, but with even less self-talk.

In both cases, in the end, they hint at that they won't be saved, but at the last moment they get saved.

In both cases, they have the same goof: although they are supposedly lost, you can see some human presence in the background (a building in this case, the coast line in Redford's movie).

The movie is well-done, that must be said, but all in all, there's not much of a story there for a a full feature length movie. And it's not very original.

Likable
11 February 2022
Indie movie, clearly made with little resources, not many actors or scenery, but likable. Actor were convincing, and the screenwriter knew how to create tension and pique the curiosity of the audience.

OMG this was a bad movie
6 February 2022
I love survival movies, and when I heart about this one I thought that's something I have to watch. The negative reviews did not change my mind. After all, I just thought people were too harsh on the movie. O boy, was I wrong: bad acting, inane dialogues, poor special effects. All combined in one.

Good, but with flaws
3 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is interesting and well crafted, but it has plot holes.

Sandra Bullock's age gap with her younger sister is kind of too wide. They could have depicted her as a mother with a 5 year old daughter and the story would still work.

In real life the legal implications of a kid shooting down someone would be different. So no need for someone to take all the blame for his 5 year old sister and getting a 60 years long prison sentence.

Weak
29 January 2022
This movie has a really weak plot and the action scenes are not worth much.

You might enjoy the acting, but this cannot compensate for an inane story.

I gave 6, but it's more of a 5.5 movie
27 January 2022
This is almost 100% a one man show around Tom Hanks. The other actors are a dog, two robots and a flashback some seconds long. That's all and that's OK since everybody likes Tom Hanks. But they could have beefed up a little on the flashbacks and shown some back story. After all it's a post-apocalypses story. The character could look back sometimes.

The movie is well crafted, but the plot is not too dense and could benefit from more moments of tension. It's almost 2 hours long, so they had time for packing more story into it.

All in all it's what it is, worth watching, but not exceptional.

Quality indie movie
14 January 2022
The acting was exceptional. If you just know Cynthia Nixon from Sex and the City, you don't realize what a great actress she is. Christopher Abbott was also terrific and so were the other actors.

The plot is not too dense, but the story is moving and it touches some deep stuff.

A movie to forget
14 December 2021
I don't know how many things are wrong with this movie. Definitely too many to tell. The story is insipid and it's not even a kind of boring afternoon kind of movie. A Hallmark movie is more artistic as this one. Honest.

On the positive side, I'd could say the cinematography was not bad, the views of Rome were beautiful. And you might find Bella Thorne astonishing. But as said, it's totally forgetable.

Pretty insipid
9 October 2021
There's nothing in this movie that would make you want to watch more of it. I'd would expect that when the main character was dying of cancer you'll get a classic finding-the-meaning-of-life-during-a-last-trip kind of movie.

The main problem might be that the novel it is based on is basically about how the character perceive things. It happens all in the head of the character. This kind of novels turn out ot be quite bad for basing movies on.

A good thing? With 80+ min it's short. And you might also like the performance of the actors. Mira Sorvino has a rather minor role in it, though.

Technically flawed, but has some good points
16 September 2021
The sound, the camera work, the lightning, and the realism of the effects (like the accident) are of the lowest quality. I have no doubt about that.

The script could need some polishing, but the story as a whole was kind of enjoyable.

The actors were pretty decent, or even good, but as it happens, the actors cannot carry the whole weight of a movie and compensate for other flaws.

Movie is great, if you are in the mood for it
22 June 2021
Watch it if you expect a young adult's crossroad in life kind of situation, an indie movie with an authentic unpretentious touch. Older generations might just look down at the story and grump about 'kids these days.'

It's kind of short-ish at 1h 12min, but this make it flow well. If they thought they had stuff for just 72 min, there's also no need to make it longer.

Matreya Scarrwener's performance was very convincing and I'm sure she is a young talented actress to watch for.

This is the lamest survival movie I have watched.
30 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The whole idea that you could get snowed in in your car and not even try to break a window to dig you free is...ridiculous. Consider that they could hear vehicles passing by and they could get a cellphone connection (which appropriately got cut due to a dead battery). What sense does this make?

Add to this the insipid dialogue, lack of any interesting plot revelation, and that the woman even gives birth in the car. They spend 15+ days in the car eating snow. Were they waiting for the movie to end? I was. In the meantime I just sent emails and read the news while watching inattentively for the movie in the background.

Listless inane movie, badly written
31 July 2020
The flashbacks are horribly embedded in the movie, in a way that the story does not flow. It just leaves you wishing they stop.

The special effect (just one) is clearly of the worst quality and looks quite artificial. I have nothing against low budget, but low budget asks for creative means, not cheap effects.

The actors are a fine bunch, but as always, good actors can't carry a weak story + bad directing on top. Their dialogues sound stiff and unnatural.

All in all, the movie tries too hard to appear open minded and inspirational, but turns out to be a movie that you would stop watching in the middle and never think back about it. Serious topics deserve more than a childish patronizing treatment like this.
