Interstellar (2014)
5/10
Collapses under the weight of its own Gravity..

Science Fiction works best when it sprinkles an element of actual science onto a canvas and then let's the imagination do the rest. Anything is possible right?

This film however, drags you by the hair into a classroom, forcefully inserts the torn pages of science textbooks into your mouth, scribbles something ridiculous on the blackboard, urinates in the corner and then wanders out half way through muttering something dumb about love. That's all before Matt Damon turns up to ruin your day.

I won't even talk about the ending...

I love real science documentaries and science fiction films in equal measures. But they should not climb into bed with each other. The offspring will not be pretty as is the proof here.

Honestly I really did want to like this film, on paper it would tick every one of my boxes, but I'm more concerned now for the mental well being of everyone who has rated this so highly and I really don't get the cult like following of certain film cast or directors. It is definitely life changing, but not in a good way.

On the other hand, the visuals and the soundtrack are both fantastic hence the rating of 5. If we could do a people's cut of the movie with no dialogue, no acting, no plot, just shots of space and beautiful frozen alien planet landscapes, then I would give this 10 without a moments hesitation.

Do watch it though and make up your own mind, but please don't say it's the best film ever made or any pukey nonsense like that.

Another Earth (2011)
6/10
Not exactly what it says on the label

This film pulled me in on its promise to deliver an interesting enough sci-fi plot. The cover suggested it as a major focus.

Unfortunately, this whole concept just sort of meanders around in the back ground.. literally, shots of 'another earth' in the sky, becoming more of a by-product.

This film, essentially a dramatic piece focusing on the aftermath of a tragedy, is actually good. Sadly, it just isn't what I came for and I felt slightly cheated at the lack of any actual sci-fi alien planet doppelgänger earth action. I'm aware of the concept, and it works as a metaphor - but it felt like the film was pulling in two different directions, marketing as one thing but delivering another.
