Lords of Dogtown (2005)
Stellar as Teenager; Still a Good Film 15 Years Later
Saw LOD in the movie theaters with my best friend when we were 16. To say we loved the movie is an understatement. We were rebellious, loved rock and roll and drugs, and a lot of the guys we were friends with were skaters. So we completely bonded with this movie. I can understand how average straight laced adults wouldn't care for this movie, but man did it speak to us. Not everyone "speaks the language" but those who do get it completely, which is why so many of us say they completely nailed the whole vibe. The casting and acting is fantastic, good dialogue, quite a few of our lifelong quotes/ inside jokes came from this movie, and for certain it has one of the greatest soundtracks in film history. It just does exactly what it does so well; people who don't like it just can't understand it. Not the plot but the whole vibe, the meaningfullness, the connection. Watching it now years later as a responsible, drug free, mid 30s mom, it still holds up as a good movie. A little too sad, but it's worth it.
If you like rock and roll and teenage angst, you should love this movie.
The Haunting of Hill House: The Bent-Neck Lady (2018)
One of the greatest episodes in television history
I doubt I can say anything here that hasn't been said. The series is one of the best television shows I've ever seen, and this episode is where the show went from great to masterclass. When we think of horror we tend to think of figures from things like The Ring or The Conjuring, jump scares, etc. This elevates horror to the most terrifying degree. The entire episode was perfect from start to finish, but from where she enters the house is the most horrifying thing I've ever witnessed. Only a few episodes of Breaking Bad have surpassed the masterwork and emotional reaction of this episode for me.
Family Guy: American Gigg-olo (2016)
Extremely Funny Episode
I laughed out loud at least twice a minute. If I made a video of my favorite jokes and bits from this episode it'd probably be 15 minutes long. This is why I hate when people say FG declined after season 7. It changed yes, but it didn't decline aside from seasons 12 and 17. Who watches FG for the plot story and character development?! You watch it because it's funny and for dark humor, and as long as it's funny and you're laughing then it's good, many times great. I actually think seasons 9 through 16 are funnier than seasons 1 through 8 (excluding the awful season 12). After season 16 then it ACTUALLY did decline, but you can still find decent episodes funny enough to watch seasons 18 on. But this episode in particular is one I point to when I hear "Family Guy declined after season 8"
The Little Mermaid (1989)
One of the greatest
I love many Disney movies. Some for their nostalgia, some for their humor, and then there's the ones I get strong emotions with. This is one of those. When Eric jumped off a lifeboat back onto a burning ship to save his dog he became my favorite male Disney character ever. When she saves him I get emotional, when her dad destroys her statue I get emotional, at the end I get emotional. Plenty of Disney movies have great songs but this is in the top 3 of all time. Under the Sea, Part of Your World, Poor Unfortunate Souls and Kiss the Girl, all in the same movie? Perfection. I'll never watch the remake because it just can't compare.
