Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990)
Reminds Me of a Fairy Tale
Tales from the Darkside does seem a lot like a Creepshow movie, and in fact I thought it had stories that had not been incorporated in the last two Creepshow movies.
I enjoyed all three stories, though I can't say that the second one really held my interest, it reminded me a lot of the Edgar Allan Poe story The Black Cat. The first one reminded me of R. L. Stine's Return of the Mummy (probably because that's what I saw first). But both stories gave a uniqueness to their own renditions, providing the movie with imaginiation.
But my favorite story of the three, like the witch in the movie, was the last one, about the Gargoyle and the Man. I am a sucker for romance, and I have to say this one romance was amazing. I mean, it definitely had it's gruesome bits and pieces, and surely was dark - but it was a beautifully tragic romance, I thought. After the last story, I was wondering what would happen to the children, if they would have the same fate as their mother, or remain locked in stone forever.
There was a lot of mythology that I wanted to be delved into regarding the gargoyle(s) in that last story - but I was content to let my imagination supply it.
The end of Tales from the Darkside had a distinctly Hansel and Gretel feel to it, though there did not appear to be a girl in the movie. It makes me wonder if there was a Gretel-esque character, and she was eaten.
A Return to Salem's Lot (1987)
A Bloody, Psychological, and Slightly Romantic Vampire Flic
I didn't know there was a tv show preceding the movie, and now that I know there's a show, I definitely want to watch that. I've seen the movie, and I really enjoyed it, despite my lack of previous tv show knowledge.
It's definitely not my favorite vampire movie (The Lost Boys has that honor), but it's one of the more creative vampire movies I've seen and does make it on my list of re-watchables. The storyline did make a lot of sense, over all, though I disagree with some of the vampiric lore.
One thing I thought made the movie rewatchable was the change in the main character. He turns from being a character I hope will die to someone I'm rooting for. The amount of change that was experienced was amazing, I think. It made the whole movie, with cheesy lines and all, worth watching.
A Little Bit Zombie (2012)
Hilarious Zombie Movie
I didn't have high expectations for this movie, mainly because it was so low budget - but I was pleasant surprised to find it much better than I initially thought.
With a low budget, the staff had to get creative, and I think that can be seen in the very few locations they have. However, this lack of moving anywhere does wonders for the story, making it almost a horror movie mockery. Plus, the so-so animation plus over the top reactions give the movie a campy feel.
The storyline itself is pretty funny, but also a little believable. It makes one wonder at the power of the human mind, and if anyone would be able to stave off a zombie virus. I found myself laughing all throughout the movie, and I do intend to watch it again. For me, this is a cult classic as far as low-budget, campy horror films go.
Sleepwalkers (1992)
Great Horror Movie, But Also Gross
While enjoyed watching Sleepwalkers for the rare were-cat subject, and the idea that were-cats were from Egypt (which makes total sense), I found the suggested incest very gross. How could a mother and son feel romantically about one another, and it be heavily implied that they have sex? It's disgusting! To make things worse, the mother gets jealous when her son is interested in a girl who's not related to him.
But other than that grossness, I enjoyed the movie! It's hard to find a movie that revolves around a were-cat, or cat-people for that matter. In all honesty, I'd much prefer watching Sleepwalkers than Cat People (1982). While the suggested incest was gross, it was nothing compared to the storyline in Cat People.
While it isn't a movie I'd likely watch again alone, I wouldn't mind watching it with someone else. It's not a bad movie and I enjoyed all the lore Stephen King created regarding sleep walkers. It was also a pretty good blood and death movie, as well as a tragic romance with a were-cat and human girl.
