Paranoia (2013)
Sad
Sad to see such great actors as HF & GO be wasted on this pile of junk.
Matt Braunger: Big Dumb Animal (2015)
Refreshingly different & original
I don't want to write much here, as comedy is very personal I think.
I've say through 5 star rated stand up comedians, without laughing once, so what other people find funny might not make you laugh.
The way Matt goes about his sketches, anecdotes and his thoughts etc., is what i liked the best. I didn't laugh at everything but it was funny enough and well put together to make me want to write this review.
Wildcatting is something I'll carry around in my holster, for when the moment calls for it!
Thanks Matt!!
The Waiter (2018)
Truly, a pile of c**p
When you see a movie categorized as "arthouse", its best to stay away,
That way, you won't be sorry to have wasted 1-3 hours of your time, watching some meaningless meanderings of people/places/situations, without any real idea of what is going on.
Sure, in this "movie", there are some definite things, but what they have to do with each other and why things happen the way the "director" puts them in, is totally unknown.
The arthouse label seems to have been devised in order for piss takers to put nonsense together and to persuade the critics & the public (while chuckling under their breaths), that their movie is a cerebral exploration of %^$£@*{+!><:"{}£$%($£@.
Don't waste your time. Find a real movie to watch.
Director: best get another job, where you actually do something.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
They should have stopped at T2
Just more cliche/garbage and "let's just do it for the money" acting.
Seeing Arnie in shorts was a nice moment though, and he "I'm extremely funny" was a surprisingly funny moment.
Away (2020)
Really? Really?
I have several criticisms of this "series", but my number one criticism would be "if this is based on real life, who evaluated and selected these alleged top people"?.
Not only is every one of the so-called "best they can find" people clearly unhinged and prone to outbursts, but their behavior is like a bunch of emotionally unbalanced angry schoolchildren, defending "their turf", especially the Russian clown.
And what about this ship, which has malfunctioned all the time? Really? This is the best NASA could come up with? Really?
My last criticism is something that is quite common now, but we should not just accept it because "that's the way of things these days so what can you do".
Its how a movie that is, at most, 1-2 hours, is dragged out into a multi-episodinal torture, of 45mins-1 hour each episode, each of which inches us along in an excruciatingly slow manner, giving us numerous tiny details that we really don't need and which do not add to the story.
I'm at episode 6 and am ready to turn off.
This has nothing to do with space, or Mars.
Its just a silly Earth drama, with people floating around in a can.
The Courier (2019)
Not believable and shaking my head ALL THE TIME
I was encouraged to watch this film by the presence of Gary Oldman, who rarely does a poor performance. Sadly, this is not a film he will likely want to remember.
The film started off OK, but after the scene where the cyanide was released and the courier took out the witness, it went downhill fairly quickly.
I found Amit, the witness, a really really annoying person, who acted just far too hysterical and unstable for the situations at hand. He overacted too. Plus, he talked loudly when it was clear he shouldn't make any noise because it would reveal their location to the thugs. The janitor's office was one such scene where he made so much noise talking when he knew the thugs weren't far away before they locked themselves in the office. I really really wanted to slap him, several times. Just shut up you moron.
There are just so many moments/scenes where the likely/logical occurrence did not happen, but something else, which was puzzling and 100% not believable, did instead. The fight scenes in particular left me shaking my head on many occasions, such as why the ringleader did not shoot and kill Amit (the whole point of him being there) when he had the chance and Amit was on the ground and unable to move, but instead, he just pointed the gun at his head and started yakking away about something. Really?
And how many times did Olga get shot or beaten and cut, yet she still managed to go on fighting big burly men, who, somehow where unable to handle a lightly framed woman, multiple times - really? And Amit, a non-military/professional fighter, was shot, cut and beaten so many times, yet he was able to run/hide/walk away as if he was OK. Really?
And towards the end, when Amit was bleeding profusely and was unconscious, somehow managed to sit on the back of a motorcycle while holding Olga, all while going through London's twisty turny roads to a hospital. Really? Really?!!!
The only nice touch was the inclusion of the song sung by Plavalaguna in the film The Fifth Element, a film which Gary Oldman was also in and which he had a few moments with in this film.
The director needs to learn how to tell a story and not just fill the time with silly/unbelievable scenes just because he likes violence.
A total waste of hard disk space and Olga/Gary's time. The other actors were mainly poor or plonkers.
L'apparition (2018)
A waste of time (save your time for something else)
This seemed like it was building up nicely to be a good film, with several aspects seemingly getting closer and closer to being revealed/explained.
Then Anna inexplicably dies, with no explanation as to the cause, nor are we told why she decided to leave the church and walk barefoot at night into the thorny woods and walk into the river, climb hills, etc.
And then the key point of the story is rushed and treated with brevity by the director, in a matter of a few minutes, and even so, we are left with other questions unanswered. And, it seems, Anna was a liar.
Some good acting but the story-writing and proper execution leave much to be desired.
The religious people were highly irritating too.
Vivarium (2019)
Director needs to go back to film school
A potentially interesting idea, but quite poorly expressed by this director.
The viewer is left hanging for ages as to what this place is and why/how it exists, but we are never told and there are many things left unexplained, or glossed over.
A thorough waste of 1 and 1/2 hours, hard disk space and two good actors time too.
Al Madrigal: Shrimpin' Ain't Easy (2017)
Brilliant and original - AAAA+++++
This special is, by quite some way, the most originally funniest experience I have had in more than 25 years. I'm still laughing several days after seeing it. It is worth seeing more than once and if I could buy a DVD of this special, I would. I'd give Al 15 stars if I could.
Thank you Al!
From Fat Lolli to 6 Pack Lolli: The Ultimate Transformation Story (2020)
Lots of gloss/noise/glitz and little else
This is a tedious 94 minutes of showboating Mr Lolli's change from a lumpy fat guy, and a self-proclaimed real estate mogul, to being on a stage in a small-time, low level physique show (in which everyone is his category was named "the winner").
Clearly, this man lost a lot of weight and built his body to something quite different to what it was before. That is all quite fine. But for the viewer, there is very little in the way of details of how he did what he did and what he had to go through, day in, day out, week in week out, month in month out.
And apart from a couple of sad events that occurred during his transformation, there isn't any footage of him struggling, of giving up, of getting despondent/dispirited/demotivated or tired, or of being unable to continue when working out. There is no mention of any issues with giving up the crap food he was eating, or how he felt, day in day out.
Then there are these numerous and pointless few seconds shots of him saying "Today is (enter date)" blah blah blah - what exactly is the point of showing the viewer that Mr director? In 9-10 months, we learned very little of what Mr Lolli went through to transform his body, but we saw lots of footage of biceps flexing, irritating stomach showing (by Mr Lolli and from one of his trainers, who is highly irritating and clearly in love with himself), and lots of footage of him doing various exercises, but none of him struggling, or in pain, or also, how much money he had to spend for all that he chose to do and that he lavished on all the people involved with him, which looks like many thousands of dollars, once it is all added up.
And of course, Mr Lolli is not working, so he doesn't have that aspect to deal with, unlike 95% of other people.
It seems that Mr Lolli didn't want to show any aspects of his journey that don't make him look good or that he didn't have to fight (win) over. Indeed, this a naked self-promotion for Mr A. Lolli, masquerading as a documentary, and which shows no failures of Mr Lolli, or any issues that face a large percentage of the population who are in similar positions to Mr Lolli, but who are not like him and do not have the resources he does.
There is also just too much footage of pointless scenes, of highly obtrusive music, flashy lights, etc., which just adds to the off putting message of this unhelpful and waste of hard disk space.
The various glaring omissions are quite significant, because glossing over numerous and complex issues, including the mental/emotional aspects that plague/frequent many of those who seek to lose weight or get fit, are very difficult barriers to overcome and Mr Lolli's 'look at how great I am" advertorial does zero for such people.
This is just an advert for how great Mr Lolli is. But we don't know what he actually went through to get from where he was to where he ended up.
